Published in The Daily News on 6/28/2007. Fryberger, Alan L. Beloved Cathlamet musician, Alan Lawrence Fryberger, passed away June 25, 2007, at Columbia View Care Center in Cathlamet. He was 90 years old. He was born in Bassano, Alberta, Canada, on Jan. 2, 1917, to Lawrence Lee and Edna (Mayfield) Fryberger. Alan graduated from high school in Charlo, Mont., in 1935. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II in the South Pacific. When Alan returned, he received a bachelor's degree in music education at the University of Montana in 1947. He married Anne Foley on June 28, 1947, and began his teaching career in Mossyrock, Wash., that same year as a music director. During summer months, he traveled back to the University of Montana to obtain his master's degree, which he completed in 1952. He came to Cathlamet from Mossyrock in 1971, where he continued to teach music until his retirement in 1975. Alan brought much joy to his family, parish and community with his wonderful gift of music. He was a member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church where he played piano and organ regularly at services. Alan is survived by his wife of 60 years, Anne, at home; a son, James Fryberger of Cathlamet; five daughters, Jeanne Fryberger Vote (Larry) of St. Mary's City, Md., Patsy Callaghan (Kevin) of Yakima, Mary Fryberger Borden (Rick) of Hamilton, Mont., Kaye Marshall (Steve) of Bellingham and Julie Fryberger of Hamilton; a sister, Doris Lindstrom of Missoula, Mont.; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many cherished nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial Mass service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Catherine's Catholic Church. The Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today.
