The Daily News-June 1966 Hans P. Fluckiger Age 67, of Puget Island, died in a local hospital after an extended illness. He had lived on Puget Island since 1936. Born in Switzerland, he had been sheriff of Wahkiakum County for the past 10 years, retiring last August. He was a member of Lower Columbia River Peace Officers Assoc. After he completed his schooling he entered the cheesemaking trade. He left the cheese trade and enrolled in a school to be trained as a peace officer. He worked for some time after he completed schooling then in 1923 he moved to Wisconsin. There he and Hilda Muhlematter were married. They stayed in Wisconsin for a year and a half, but cold weather sent them west. They settled in Chimacum, near Port Angeles. There he was employed in a saw mill. He returned to the cheesemaking business and worked in that trade in Dungeness, Yakima, Tacoma and Morton. In 1936 the family moved to Puget Island where he supervised cheese making in the building that is now the Puget Island fire hall. After the cheese factory closed he went to work at the saw mill in Westport, Ore. Survivors include his widow, Hilda, at home; two daughters, Verena Nepsund of Puget Island and Hilda Dickey of Raymond; one son, Hans A. of Puget Island; ten grandchildren; and one brother Fritz of Switzerland. Services were Wednesday at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church of Puget Island with Rev. James Bullock officiating. Dowling Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
