"The Lincoln Leader", Toledo, Oregon - Thursday, May 10, 1894 Died. FITZPATRICK - At the St. Vincent's hospital, at Portland, on Wednesday, May 9, 1894, John Fitzpatrick, of the Hotel Monterey, of Newport. "The Lincoln Leader", Toledo, Oregon - Thursday, May 17, 1894 Death of John Fitzpatrick. The death of Mr. John Fitzpatrick, of which mention was made in last week's issue, occurred at St. Vincent's hospital on May 9, at 3 o'clock p.m. Mr. Fitzpatrick was a prominent and well known fisherman of the lower Columbia, and was also the owner of considerable property in Lincoln county, among which was the popular Hotel Monterey, on Big Creek, near Cape Fowlweather. Pneumonia, which he contracted on a trip down the river a few days ago, was the cause of death. Mr. Fitzpatrick was a veteran of the Mexican war, and was a member of one of the armies of settlers which arrived in California in 1849. He came to Oregon late in the '50's, and from the time of his arrival until his death was engaged in fishing. He leaves a wife and eight children, who are residing at present at the Hotel Monterey, in this county. Mr. Fitzpatrick's death removes an active and industrious man and in peculiarly unfortunate to Lincoln county, as he has had several projects in contemplation which would have naturally developed our resources and thereby benefited our people. Among these were the establishing of a cannery and saw mill on the Siletz, the initiatory steps looking to which, we are informed, have already been taken. Mr. Fitzpatrick was a Mexican war veteran, being able seaman on board the warship Ohio in 1946, when she was dispatched to Mexican waters to assist General Taylor in the capture of Monterey. It was in honor of this famous victory that Mr. Fitzpatrick gave the name of his hotel on Big Creek. The funeral took place from St. Patrick's church, Portland, last Saturday morning, and was attended by a body of Mexican war veterans. Unknown Burial Location 1824-9 May 1894 (As transcribed by the Wahkiakum County Historical Society from a copy of the original newspaper article in 2011.)
