Wahkiakum County Eagle-Thursday, October 1998 EVANS, David Richard Age 73, died at his home in Manzanita, Ore. He was born in Ronan, Montana. He grew up in Skamokawa in the 1930's and 1940's, and in February 1943, he joined the US Marine Corps, where he served in the Pacific Theatre during WWII until December 1945 when he was discharged. In 1951, he graduated from Lewis and Clark College in Portland, which also marked the year that he married Ruth 'Peggy' Howell in Victoria, B.C. and began his career of over 30 years teaching. In 1952 David and Peggy were blessed with a son, William. From there the family moved to Micronesia where David taught in native schools and in 1956 they adopted Esther into their family. In 1960 David and his family moved back to the US where David taught in rural schools all through Washington and Oregon during the 1960's and 1970's. From 1980 to 1982 David and Peggy taught at a two-room school in Brothers, Ore. when in 1982 they returned to Micronesia, where they both taught in an outer- island school in the Marshall Islands. They remained there until 1990, when they both would retire and move to Manzanita, where they have lived since. In 1994, David and Peggy made a four-month trip across Micronesia, where Peggy did Bahai work and David spent time looking up people who had been his students in the 1950's. Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Ruth Margaret 'Peggy'; a son, William D. of Mt. Vernon; a daughter, Esther Ann Smith of Portland; a sister, Mildred Mulder of Seaside, Ore.; a brother, Edwin R. of Portland; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Wallace N. Evans. At the request of the family, there was no services. Waud's Funeral Home in Tillamook, Ore., was in charge.
