Wahkiakum Eagle-July 1999 ERICKSON, GLADYS ELIZABETH Age 91, of Grays River, died at a Cathlamet nursing home. She was born in Astoria, Ore., the daughter of John R. and Anna (Johnson) Carlson. She lived in Altoona and Grays River most all of her life. As a child she attended school by traveling by fish boat to Skamokawa and other towns along the river between Pillar Rock and Altoona, where the grade she needed was being taught. At that time, there were no connective roads, one traveled by river. She graduated from high school in Astoria, Ore., and from Bellingham Normal School to become a primary teacher. She taught school in Cordova, Alaska and Cathlamet and Dahlia. Later she raised chickens, having the largest chicken ranch in SW Washington. She shipped her eggs on the Imperial boat from Carlson's Landing to Astoria. On August 18, 1951, she married Arvol Erickson in the Naselle Lutheran Church. He preceded her in death in 1962. She was a person who enjoyed gardening, both flowers and vegetables, watching the river traffic, picking berries and clam digging. She was a member of Vasa Lodge of Rosburg. Survivors include a half-sister, Ruth Gustafson, of Arizona; and many nephews, cousins and wonderful friends. Graveside services were held Wednesday at the cemetery with Pastor Rick Ballif officiating. Dowling Funeral Home was in charge.
