The Eagle-Cathlamet, Wahkiakum, WA - February 7, 1946-Front Page Mrs. Elliot, Pioneer Citizen, Passes On. Mrs. Chlorice May Elliot died in Portland, Oregon, on Thursday, Jan. 31, 1946, and was laid to rest in the Crescent Grove cemetery at Beaverton, Oregon, on Monday of this week. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Jean Hardenbrook of Los Angeles, Calif., and three sons, William W. Elliot and Rufus K. Elliot of Portland, Oregon, and Ralph C. A. Elliot of Beaverton, Oregon. Chlorice May Ebare was born July 13, 1861, on a farm in French Prairie near St. Paul in Marion county, Oregon. As a small child she came with her parents to Astoria, Oregon, and for a time the family was employed there and on Bakers Bay in Pacific county, Washington, in the salmon packing industry. Later the family came to Wahkiakum county and settled in the Elochoman valley. Here Mrs. Elliot spent the greater part of her life. Here occurred her marriage to Henry Elliot and to this union was born a daughter, Jean Bruce Elliot. Henry Elliot died and later the widow met and married his older brother, Ralph C. A. Elliot. Their home was on what is now known as the Bill Lund farm. Four sons, Walter, William, Rufus and Ralph, and two daughters, Arwilda and Maxine were born of this marriage. After many years the family moved to the town of Cathlamet, purchasing the residence of Dr. Peacock, now known as the Elliot house at the south end of Main street. This is one of the oldest houses now standing in Wahkiakum county, having been built by Mr. Birnie as a wedding present for one of his daughters. It is constructed of cedar lumber, brought around the Horn in sailing vessels. Nails are of wrought iron. With care and forethought, Mrs. Elliot preserved some of the original furniture. There is a French Colonial Pine bedroom suite which it is said was used by the founder of Cathlamet. It was in this home that Mrs. Elliot spent her declining years, being in Portland only for the winter months and to visit her children. Here it was the custom for her many friends to drop in and sit for a while and listen to her memories of the days when with the oxen it was a day’s excursion to come from Elochoman valley to Cathlamet for supplies. We shall miss those visits, but our life is the richer for having known this pioneer woman of Wahkiakum county.
