Wahkiakum Eagle-November 1985 DOUMIT, George J. Picture included. A lifelong resident of Cathlamet, died in a Longview hospital. He and his wife, Maxine Doumit, owned and operated Doumit's Grocery for 40 years, and had also owned Hometown Cathlamet Hardware Store at one time. He was born at Rainier, Ore. He graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 1933 and attended Washington State University before serving with the Navy during WWII in the South Pacific. As an active member of the Cathlamet community, he served with the volunteer fire department for 42 years, the City Council for 16 years and the Cathlamet Commercial Club. He was instrumental in the organization and building of the Wahkiakum Historical Society. He was a member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church and was also a member of United Grocers and the Longview Elks Lodge. Surviving him in Cathlamet are his wife, Maxine, at home; two sons and their families, Steven and Ruth Doumit and children Angela, Timothy and Stacey, and Donald and Dale Ann Doumit and their children, Lance and Ashley; a brother, Eli G.; a sister, Leona Boyer; and his mother and father-in-law, Ernie and Irene Stockwell. Also surviving are sister, Rose D. Kiblan of St. Helens, Ore.; Sally Bloomquist of Port Orchard; Marian Peterson of Seaside, Ore.; and Helen Marie Wompler of Fresno, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Helen Doumit, and two brothers, Harry and Mitchell Doumit. A memorial Mass was said Wednesday at St. Catherine's Catholic Church.
