Wahkiakum Co. Eagle-January 2003 DOUMIT, Elizabeth J. Age 93, a life-long resident of Cathlamet and Wahkiakum County, died at the Canterbury Gardens assisted living facility in Longview. She was born in Cathlamet, the daughter of Neil and Ellen Foster, Wahkiakum County pioneers, and spent her childhood years growing up on her family's farm in the Elochoman Valley. She retained ownership of the farm and the original farmhouse at the intersection of Foster Road and Elochoman Valley Road throughout her life-time. Graduating from Wahkiakum High School in 1926 as the school's first female student body president and class valedictorian, she went on to attend the University of Washington in Seattle. She returned to Cathlamet to marry Mitchell Doumit on June 6, 1928, and in the years to follow she raised two children, Michael J. and Mary Elizabeth (Doumit) Thomas. Mrs. Doumit was employed as the Wahkiakum High School librarian, and as a bookkeeper and tax preparer in solo practices. She was active in a wide variety of community service organizations to include Girl Scouts (leader), 4-H (leader), American Legion Auxiliary (President), Cathlamet City Park Commission (Chairman), and the Board of trustees of Lower Columbia College where she served two terms. She was also active in state and national political and service organizations to include Republican party state committeewoman, Washington State Council for Children and Youth, Governor's state Mental Health Survey Committee, Governor's Physical Fitness Committee, Governor's Committee for the Olympic National Forest, Governor's Advisory Board for the Washington State Schools for the mentally retarded, the blind, the deaf, and for disturbed boys and girls, the Washington State Federated Women's Clubs (past president), General Federation of Women's Clubs (Director), member of the Board of Directors for the National Bicentennial Celebration Committee and a long time member of the D.A.R. She was survived by her daughter, Mary E. Thomas of Cathlamet; her granddaughters, Libby Ravander of Camas, and Michelle Fladebo of University Place; grandson, Mike Thomas of Cathlamet; a sister, Mayme Risk of Portland; three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mitchell Doumit and her son, Michael Doumit. A Celebration of Life ceremony was held Saturday at the United Church of Christ (Congregational) in Cathlamet with Rev. Greg Kammann officiating. Dowling Funeral Home was in charge. Elizabeth J.
