Wahkiakum Eagle-Aug 1998 DOUMIT, Eli George Age 88, of Cathlamet, died at a Longview hospice center. He was born at Cathlamet, the son of John and Helen (Antone) Doumit. He was a lifelong resident of Cathlamet graduating from Wahkiakum High school in 1928 and attending University of Washington. He left college to run John Doumit and Sons General Mercantile for 11 years, when he bought land in Wahkiakum county and became a self-employed farmer and logger. In April of 1942, he enlisted in the Army-AirCorps. He served through the end of WWII in 1945. He met his future wife, Patricia Lawton in England, during the war. When he returned from the war, he and a friend, Bud Wolverton, set up a partnership, which lasted for several years, in logging. Also, for several years, he was a mechanic for Crown Zellerbach Corp. He and his wife were married on June 26, 1947 at St. Catherine Catholic Church in Cathlamet. He purchased the land which is now a large portion of the Julia Butler Hansen Wildlife Refuge in 1960. He retired from ranching in 1973. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, clamming, traveling and most of all, spending time with his family. He enjoyed all sports, especially baseball and tennis, and was a member of the Town Baseball Team and the Town Tennis Champ. He was a member of St. Catherine Catholic Church, charter member of Cathlamet Fire Department, served on the City Council, the Wahkiakum School Board, Wahkiakum Diking Commissioner and member of Elochoman Grange. Survivors include his wife, Patricia, at home; sons, John D. of Cathlamet, Peter G. of Moses Lake, James E. of Olympia, Thomas M. of Rosburg, Patrick F. of San Antonio, Tex., Paul D. of Olympia, Mark L. of Cathlamet, and Matthew E. of Mason, Mich.; daughters, Margaret H. Emerick of Cathlamet, Anne D. Sparks of San Diego, and Helen P. Hein of Tacoma; four sisters, Sally Bloomquist of Port Orchard, Marian Peterson of Seaside, Ore., Leona Boyer of Cathlamet, and Helen Marie Wampler of Fresno, Calif.; 23 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. There was a Celebration of Life Service Memorial Mass on Friday at St. Catherine Catholic Church with Father Scott Connolly officiating. There was a Rosary Vigil on Thursday with Fred John as speaker. Dowling Funeral Home was in charge.
