Wahkiakum Eagle-October 2000 CARLSEN, Helen (Weber) Age 93, of Puget Island, died at home. She was born in Brownsville, Ore., the eldest child of Albert and Afy Kirk Weber, Oregon pioneer families. On a summer vacation to Puget Island with a college girlfriend she met John Carlsen. She graduated from college and taught first grade for eight years in Clatskanie before they married. At that time married women were not allowed to continue teaching. In 1942 they moved to Puget Island. She later taught in Skamokawa and Cathlamet. She and her family traveled extensively, making many trips to Norway, Mexico and New Zealand. She is survived by her son, Richard Carlsen of Sunnyvale, Calif.; daughter, Kayrene Gilbertsen of Puget Island; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; a sister, Jean Arnold of King City; a brother, Jim Weber of Ontario, Ore. She was preceded in death by her husband John in 1979 and son Rodney, in 1988 and a brother, Harold Weber in 1998. At her request there was no service.
