Wahkiakum County Eagle-August 1996 Calhoun, Georgena Louise ‘Jean’ Long-time Grays River resident, Georgena Louise ‘Jean’ Calhoun, 81, died August 13, in Longview. Mrs. Calhoun was born November 6, 1914 in Clatskanie, Ore., the daughter of George and Teena (Payne) Dye. She was a 1932 graduate of Clatskanie High School and during her senior year received a perfect attendance certificate. Following high school she moved to Grays River where she was a bookkeeper for George Badger’s Garage. On June 13, 1934 she married John Kenneth Calhoun in Vancouver. They returned to the Grays River area and operated a dairy farm on Loop Road and during this time Mrs. Calhoun worked as an operator for Wahkiakum Telephone. Moving to Grays River in 1953 Mrs. Calhoun assumed the duties as postmaster at the Grays River Post Office, a post she held for 36 years from May 5, 1953 until January 3, 1989. Mrs. Calhoun was a member of St. Mary’s Parish of Seaview, Rebekahs Lodge, and was a past member of the Wahkiakum Planning Commission. At the time of her death she was an employee of the Wahkiakum County PUD, having served 32 years as manager of the satellite office in Grays River. Mrs. Calhoun was a lover of music, having played the organ at area churches; played piano with a family band for dances; and taught piano lessons to area youth. She enjoyed watching and feeding birds and was loved by the community she served for many years. She is survived by her son, Roger Lee Calhoun and daughter-in-law Barbara Allen of Gig Harbor; daughter-In-law Lucy Calhoun of Kelso; and grand-daughters, Kathy Schoultz of Spokane, Kristi Calhoun of Clatskanie and Marni Calhoun of Mercer Island. She was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth on March 6, 1964. Graveside services were Friday at Murray Hill Cemetery, Clatskanie. Memorial services were held Monday at Grays River Methodist Church with Father Richard Gallagher officiating. Arrangements were by Penttila’s Chapel by the Sea, Long Beach.
