Wahkiakum County Eagle-February 26, 1998 Buffington, Aileen Aileen Sheldon Vassar Buffington, 934, of Puget Island, died February 22, 1998, at a Longview nursing home. She was born April 4, 1903, in Boston, to John H. and Henrietta (McKinnon) Sheldon, and was raised and educated in the Boston area. She attended Wellesley College. A figure skater, she posed for paintings that appeared on national magazine covers. Later she was an actress and dancer on the stage, and worked for MGM as a movie extra. She then worked in hospital administration for 25 years in Los Angeles and raised her two children. Next she fished commercially, owning tuna boats that worked the Pacific off the U.S. and Mexican coasts. In 1958 she moved to Puget Island, where she spent the rest of her life. Locally, she had a charter boat business for a time. She enjoyed gardening, traveling and researching genealogy. Mrs. Buffington was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Survivors include her husband, Warren E. Buffington, at home; two sons, John W. Marts III of Salem, Va., and Robert S. Marts of Somers Point, N.J.; six grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. Funeral services were Wednesday at the LDS Church in Cathlamet with Elder Fred Bennett officiating. Interment was at Greenwood Cemetery in Cathlamet.
