The Clatskanie Chief-Friday, June 9, 1950 Service Held for Norman Brecke Services were held on Tuesday, June 6th in Westport for the late Pfc. Norman F. Brecke who was killed in action on Leyte in 1944. Norman was 17 and was born in Astoria on April 12, 1927. He had until the time of his enlistment lived in Westport the most of his life. He attended the Westport school where he played basketball, football and baseball. He was 15 ½ years old at the time of his enlistment. He received his basic training at Camp McCall, N.C. and later got his parachute training at the jump school at Fort Benning, Ga. In 1944 he went with the 457th Field Artillery parachute troops and was killed in action on December 22, 1944. His body was returned to Astoria Saturday accompanied by military escort. His parents Mr. and Mrs. Garney S. Brecke of Westport survive as do a brother, Richard, and a sister, Sharon Lee. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Hughes-Ransom mortuary.
