Wahkiakum Co. Eagle-August 1954 RIVER VICTIM Picture of Leonard Boylan The rigors of the Columbia River beside which he had lived most of his days, last week took the life of Leonard Boylan, well known and popular construction man and fisherman. Leonard was lost along with five other crew members of the tug Muleduzer, work boat of the Larson Construction Company which was undertaking preliminary work on a cofferdam at Bonneville. At press time the body of the Cathlamet man had not been recovered. The accident occurred on Friday afternoon, as the Larson tug was jockeying a barge near the swift intake of one of the Bonneville Dam spillways. Leonard was a nearhalf-century resident of this area having moved here at six years of age from his birthplace in Oregon City in 1906. He had celebrated his fifty-fourth birthday on Jan. 21. The well known features of him could be seen for years past as fisherman or carpenter in and about Cathlamet and Puget Island. Recently he had been engaged by the Larson Construction Company in the building of the Elochoman hatchery and followed that firm to its new and tragedy-ridden assignment at Bonneville. He is survived by his wife, Lenore; six children, eight grandchildren, two brothers and four sisters. The children are: Naomi Simpson, Bremerton; Betty Stewart, Vancouver; Jennita Massey, Salem, Ore.; Florence Boylan, Puget Island; Vernon, Longview; and Billy Boylan of Puget Island. Brothers are: Fred of Camas and Vernon of Scappoose; sisters: Rita Rodal, Cathlamet; Mrs. Maynard Pezziro and Mrs. Jack Antonsen of Grande Rounde, Ore., and Mrs. Melvin Farmer of Portland.
