Columbia River Sun- October 19, 1916- Page 2, Col. 4 Cathlamet, Wahkiakum, WA IN MEMORIAM William A. Arnold, an old citizen of this place, died Sunday evening from a secondary hemorrhage, the result of an operation performed a year and a half ago. He was bedfast for almost a year before his death. Mr. Arnold was born at Weston, near London, England, in 1851; worked as a blacksmith's apprentice until he was 19, when he emigrated to America, locating in New York, were he married Mary E. Revelle in 1873. A few years later he went to Colorado and resided there until 1891, when he came to Cathlamet, and had been a resident here since. He was pastor of the church here for several years. About ten years ago he took up a homestead in the Elochoman valley, the last years of his life being spent there. In the year 1912 he was elected to represent Wahkiakum county in the legislature and was known by the members as the "Fighting Parson." About two years ago he purchased the Cathlamet Criterion and the plant, later changing the name of the newspaper to the Cathlamet News, which he edited until about a year ago when the publication was suspended. He leaves to mourn his death a widow, two sons, F. J. Arnold of Spokane and Thomas R. Arnold of this place, and two brothers. The funeral was directed by E. B. Hughes the Astoria undertaker, and services were held in the Congregational Church Tuesday forenoon. Interment took place in Greenwood Cemetery.
