Wahkiakum Co. Eagle-October 1997 Eugene "Ole" Arness A life-long resident of the Cathlamet area, died at his Puget Island home. He was 76 years old. He was born in Cathlamet, the son of Ole and Gertrude (Jergenson) Arness. He graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 1939 and served in the Army in WWII in the Aleutian Islands. He enjoyed fishing the Columbia and Elochoman rivers, hunting and cutting wood. He retired from Crown Zellerbach as a boom boss in 1982. Survivors include three sons, Steve and Brian Arness of Cathlamet and Phillip Arness of Kelso; a step-daughter, Jewel Arness of Cathlamet; two sisters, Madge Cross of Yuma, Ariz., and Alba Kniskern of Woodburn, Ore.; and nine grandchildren. Services were Friday from Dowling Funeral Chapel with Alvin Lakey officiating. Dowling Funeral Home was in charge.
