Wahkiakum Eagle-October 1999 ANDERSON, James Oliver Age 74, died in British Columbia. He was born in Clatskanie, Ore., the son of Arthur G. and Katherine C. Holte Anderson. After his graduation from Clatskanie High school in 1943 he entered the Navy and served in the South Pacific in WWII. After leaving the service he worked in several saw mills and came to Cathlamet in 1953 where he worked in a sawmill until he started Anderson Shake and Shingle Mill in the 1960's, a family business still in operation today. He sponsored many athletic teams both male and female and was a member of the Elochoman Grange, the Longview Moose, the Longview Elks and served in the Cathlamet Fire department for 25 years, retiring as an assistant chief. He enjoyed breaking and training horses and raised cattle for many years. He spent 12 years as a member of the Cathlamet Town council and served as acting mayor on occasion. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and hunting, traveling and visiting with his family, being with friends, playing practical jokes and telling stories. His wife, Lila, died in 1980 and he married Irene Phillips in 1982. Survivors include his wife, Irene, at home; three sons, James A. of Cathlamet, Dean A. of Athol, Idaho and Scott A. of Longview; a daughter, Cheryl D. Parker of Everett; a brother, Thomas W. of Carlton, Ore.; two sisters, Arline Minzey and Eunice Gamble, both of Clatskanie; stepson, Christopher Phillips of Bellingham; stepdaughter, Victoria Moore of Ellensburg; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Services were Thursday from the Elochoman Grange with Dr. Harlon Gilleland of the Longview Community church officiating. Dowling Funeral Home was in charge.
