Wahkiakum Co. Eagle-July 1996 ALLEN, Ethan H. A merchant ship captain, he died at age 84. His ashes sailed down the river aboard the Liberty ship Jeremiah O'Brian on Jul 31 to be scattered in the ocean. He was born in Vancouver, and joined the State Line as a cadet in 1928. He worked for Weyerhaeuser Line as a seaman and deck officer. He also taught seamanship in the United States Maritime Academy. He served the Navy as a master of Alaska supply vessels, operations assistant for the United States Maritime Administration in Portland and later marine superintendent of International Shipping Co. He also worked for the Columbia River Pilots as a dispatcher. He retired in 1981. The Allens lived on Puget Island for several years after his retirement. Survivors include his wife, Annabelle of Vancouver; sisters, Edna Farrier and Marge Donelson, both of Beaverton, and Florence Ryding of Portland; brother, Frank P. of Portland. Memorial services were held Saturday at the Mt. Hood Masonic Lodge.
