The Eagle-April 1997 Oiva Emil "Ike" Alanen Age 87, Life-long Naselle area resident, died in a Long Beach care center. He was born on the family farm in Salmon Creek, the son of Finnish immigrants Matt and Mary Niukkala Alanen. He attended Salmon Creek schools. He farmed, commercial fished, logged for Deep River Timber and Valley 8 Logging, and drove bus for Naselle area schools. A lifetime member of Naselle Lutheran Church, he also was a member of the Naselle Grange and International Woodworkers of America union. An avid hunter and fisherman, he had hunted moose in Canada, enjoyed gardening and was known for his handyman skills. He actively took part in senior citizen events in the Naselle area and on the Peninsula. He is survived by nephews Roy Nelson of Rosburg, and Donald Alanen of Beaverton, Ore.; nieces Dolores Ripley of Bremerton, and Betty Vaughn and Frances Penttila, both of Naselle. He was preceded in death by sisters Martha Talus, Eva Nelson and Hilja Alanen; brothers Einar and Sulo Alanen; and nephew Henry Talus and niece Cecilia Caffin. Memorial services were Saturday at the Naselle Lutheran Church. Arrangements were by Penttila's Chapel by the Sea, Long Beach.
