Wahkiakum Eagle-September 2003 Helen Dorothy Abbott Age 89, died in Hillsboro, Oregon. She was born in Linnton, Ore., the daughter of Peter F. and Alma Evarena (Gundersen) Jaspers who built their first home on Puget Island in 1905. She was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church on Puget Island. She was part of the first confirmation class from that congregation. A 1932 graduate of Wahkiakum High School, she attended St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing in Astoria, graduating in 1937. In nursing school she met husband Harry B. Abbott. They married October 11, 1937 in Castle Rock. They lived in Longview where Harry worked for Longbell Lumber Co. and Helen worked at Cowlitz General Hospital. After a brief time on Puget Island and Vancouver, the Abbotts moved to Yoncalla, Ore., where Harry became a distributor for Perkins Oil Co. There they purchased the family home and raised their five children. She was an active participant in her community. She was the official nurse for the annual Yoncalla Professional Rodeo for many years, a member of the Business and Profess- ional Women's organization and the PTA.
