The big steel prow of the Coast Guard Cutter Northland battered a water
route to the ice-beleaguered communities of Cathlamet, Skamokawa, and
Puget Island along the north shore of the Columbia River yesterday, and
the lighthouse tender, Rose, loaded with more than 100 tons of supplies
and 40 or 50 sacks of mail followed...
