Kleppin, 89, left on his eternal fishing trip on June 28, he was joyfully welcomed by his predeceased wife of 54 years, Leah Ellen, and his stepson, John William Albrecht (Jack), who had been waiting for their Skipper. Before his peaceful departure, Glen was able to return to his home in Bonney Lake, where his beautiful flowers, friends and family surrounded him to bid him good journey. Glen was born February 25, 1909 in Wessington Springs, South Dakota, to Paul F. Kleppin and Matilda Brodkorb Kleppin. As he told it, there were five boys in the family and each of them had two sisters. Glen graduated from Wessington Springs High School, and from a technical college where he trained as a Refrigeration Engineer. As a young man, he first engaged in his lifelong hobbies of hunting and fishing. He first worked in Bismarck, North Dakota, where he met a pretty lady with flashing eyes and fell passionately and permanently in love. On May 14, 1940 he married Leah Ellen Armstrong and, along with her son Jack, they moved to Rapid City, South Dakota, to begin their life together. Glen opened his own business, Kleppin Refrigeration, and they joined the First Presbyterian Church. Their daughter, Glenda Lea, was born in 1945. In Rapid City, Glen was involved in various fraternal organizations, including the Elks Club and United Commercial Travelers. His holiday tables always included several guests, sometimes servicemen he invited from the streets who had no other family available. He generously gave of his professional and personal services to community groups, the elderly, and the widowed. One particular instance which gave him great pride was finding a small girl who was lost in a rugged part of the Black Hills. After more than 20 years, Glen finally decided to give up his business for a job with regular hours. He eventually went to work for Boeing and moved to Bonney Lake, Washington, where he set out to build his own enchanted gardens. His special pride and joy was his Dahlia garden, which provided flowers for the Sumner Presbyterian Church and for his neighbors and friends. After retiring from Boeing, Glen earned his Coast Guard license and was the "Skipper" of various charter boats at Westport, Washington. His last boat was the "Rick Sue" out of "Coho Charters". Glen became a volunteer fireman in Bonney Lake and donated hundreds of hours of hard labor building two police and fire stations. He and Leah also kept the police and fire departments well-stocked with fish, Leah's baked goods, and good jokes. Glen was a volunteer for the Good Samaritan Adult Respite Care, gave out food at the food bank, and was a deacon in his church. He never went anywhere without a smile, a joke, and his toolbox. He took flowers and sunshine to those who were ill or homebound, and could always be counted on to do repairs for those who could not do their own. He lovingly nursed Leah through several years of declining health, never regretting or begrudging the time or effort it took. He served as a shining example to both of his children and to his grandchildren, who will miss him greatly. Glen is survived by his sister, Ruth Hughes of Colorado; his daughter, Glenda L. Kleppin, who will live in the family home; his daughter-in-law, Beverly Albrecht of Delaware; his grandchildren, Tana Iffland, Bart Albrecht, Brett Albrecht, John Dickson, Deborah Kidd and Dawna Kennedy; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Marilyn grew up in Fircrest and lived her whole life in Tacoma, graduating from Wilson in 1961. She and Roger, a very well-traveled couple, brought the kids to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico in 1982. While the vacation eventually came to an end, their hearts never left the beautiful fishing town. They spent increasing amounts of time there, and when Marilyn was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 1996, Roger brought his beloved wife to where she always felt most at home - the balmy sunshine of PV. She spent her last days warm and comfortable, listening to the waves crash on the beach, and she will spend eternity there when Roger scatters her remains in Banderas Bay on March 6th. There will be no public service in Tacoma for Marilyn, but those wishing to remember her are greatly encouraged to make a donation in her name to Alzheimer's research. Her family, friends, and caregivers (thank you, Connie Anglen) will never forget this beautiful and proud lady, who fought a brutal disease to the very end. He was a member of Phoenix Lodge 154, the Puyallup Elks and was a member and past president of Sumner Rotary for 62 years. When asked by his granddaughter Megan, what he attributed his long and healthy life to, he told her “Do everything in moderation and it is important to have tolerance of other people.” Grandpa Chuck was always humble and never wanted to talk about his accomplishments, but his family would like you to know: He was remembered by his schoolmates as efficient and capable and that if only one could hold the stage together, it would be Chuck. He was the President of his Senior Class in 1925, was active in Chemistry Club, Debate Club, Honors English, Hi-Y, Latin Club, Glee Club and was the Editor-In-Chief of the school’s “Topic” staff. Charles was 8 1/2 years old when his father died. In order to make ends meet, his mother Cora became the housemother of the Masonic Orphanage. This allowed them to grow up in the nicest house in town and the orphans became their “family”. The palatial mansion had a ballroom, library and elegant living areas. At a young age, the family doctor instilled a dream to one day pursue a career in medicine. He began his quest to fulfill this dream when he graduated from Indiana University Medical School, Magna Cum Laude in 1931. Smith, Jr. February 5, 1960 - October 23, 2001 John went to laugh with the angels of heaven on October 23, 2001, after a long illness. He leaves behind, and is dearly loved by, Lula, his mother; John, his father; and five siblings: sisters June, Jeanine and Debra Smith, and brothers Paul and Bruce Smith. God blessed this world with John in Martinsferry, Ohio on February 5, 1960. He spent much of his life in a facility for the profoundly retard- ed in Buckley, Washington. In spite of his disability, he so enriched the lives of those around him that it is clear we shall never be the same. John’s life has shown us, the surviving, that hope is not merely a word, but a life, his life. John taught those around him to believe in something more meaningful than ourselves. His existence educated us to believe in the purpose and meaning that is this life we all live. His life stood for something. Even though it is difficult to understand what his quality of life was, we know that it had a quality. His laugh was infectious; his smile seemed to make a sunny summer day brighter, even when the sun was shining at its highest and hottest. His occasionally pensive gaze touched the depths of our souls as we questioned, “why?” To those of you that didn’t know John and don’t know any of the disabled at Rainier School, they test our compassion, our wisdom, our tolerance, and our assumptions about their limitations. Mourn, all of you that can, and take note of grandeur, for it hides in places you can’t begin to imagine. Grandeur hid inside of John W. Smith, Jr. When one of God’s own angels passes, they leave this world a shade grayer than it was before. Say hello to someone that is different than yourself as you move throughout your daily routine, because that someone may just be an angel. We love you, John. “It is said an Eastern monarch once charged his wise men to invent him a sentence to be ever in view, and which should be true and appropriate in all times and situations. They presented him the words: “And this, too, shall pass away.” How much it expresses! How chastening in the hour of pride! How consoling in the depths of affliction!” -Abraham Lincoln- Funeral service Friday, Nov. 2, 2001 at 11:00 am at Weeks’ Whitmore Funeral Home in Buckley. Born August 24th, 1911 in Tacoma, he was a descendant of Washington pioneers. Ted’s grandfather William Bishop, a British sailor, came from England and settled near Port Townsend in 1856. Ted’s dream was to follow the tradition of his family and go to sea. Leaving the Washington State Patrol, Ted joined the Merchant Marine service at the start of World War II and continued until the end of the Korean conflict. During his time in the merchant service, Ted attained the rank of Captain and had a license to command unlimited tonnage vessels. Despite his responsibilities, Ted always found time to aid those who were struggling or less fortunate. Captain Bishop left the Merchant Marines and went to service as a Captain with the Washington State Ferry System. Ted received his license as a Puget Sound Maritime Pilot and sailed ferries to Canada as needed. Wanting to give back to his community, Ted and his wife, Beverly, had become curators of historical Fort Nisqually in Point Defiance Park. Ted was instrumental in preserving the Fort and upgrading the facility. Ted enjoyed giving tours of the Fort and sharing the history of the site. Ted and his wife of fifty years retired to Puyallup and remained active with the community. Ted was often seen in local establishments asking for a smile and leaving messages of support, thoughtful insight or even a note of dry humor. During his final years, Ted be- came a student of philosophy. He recorded his thoughts in his writings, “Life has no value other than I can be of service to my fellow man”. Ted’s last act of community service was his request that his remains be given to the U of W Medical School for Science. No service will be held. Contributions may be made to the charity of choice in the name of Captain Ted Bishop. Forrest L. “Ole” Olson Age 81, passed away unexpectedly October 24, 2001.
