OYSTERVILLE CEMETERY The US GenWeb Archives provide genealogical and historical data to the general public without fee or charge of any kind. It is intended that this material not be used in a commercial manner. All submissions become part of the permanent collection. Burial list of Oysterville Cemetery transcribed and submitted by T Sheldon June 2002. Both above notices must remain when copied or downloaded. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Oysterville WA, a small community occupied by a band of Indians, led by Chief Nahcati, is located at the head of Willapa Bay. In April 1854 the chief aided Isaac Clark and R.H. Espy in locating a bed of native oysters on the Willapa Bay for which the two men made considerable trade in CA, and experienced a great wealth. The community became a busy port, and prospered into the late 1880s. The town became the county seat, and was so until the courthouse was 'raided' by folk of South Bend. It was then that Oysterville became a ghost town, though there are yet residents of this interesting 100 acre township. The cemetery was donated originally by F.C. Davis in 1864. This may have been the first cemetery in WA Territory. In 1970 more land was added to the one acre Davis parcel when the H.A.Espy family donated a second acre. Long before there were actual records for the cemetery, there were burials here. There were burials of unknown sailors here as well, either from shipwrecks or through beach wash. Various people that took over the care of the cemetery through the years have tried to list out early lot ownership, but the names of those buried is incomplete prior to the late 1800s. In physically looking over the cemetery it looks as if there are groupings of stones. The cemetery is quite full, actually. In writing out this reading I have sectioned it off thrice. First is what I can see now, secondly is a section of historical burials, and lastly is a section of unknowns. The cemetery is on Davis Hill, on Oysterville Cemetery Road.
