“It was September, 1944, and Holland was under siege when Allied soldiers parachuted into Best to secure the area from the advancing Germans. In the struggle, a Reardan boy, Joe Mann, already wounded four times by rifle fire, died when he threw his body over a grenade to shield others from the explosion. Of such things are heroes made and statues erected. Such a one is the Joe Mann Memorial at the entrance to the Memorial Gardens at Best visited for the first time this fall by Mr and Mrs Jack Mann of Reardan, Joe’s brother. A sister, Irene Bennett and her husband of Salem, OR accompanied them.  Every five years is a week’s celebration honoring Holland’s liberation; along the corridor wreaths are laid at memorials and people recall the day when the sky filled with parachutes and the ‘Yanks’ dropped onto Dutch soil.  ‘It is absolutely fantastic,’ exclaimed Mrs Mann, ‘how these people remember. Children will draw pictures of the event as it was told to them by their parents who lived through it. They will have enactments of the battle all along the route. Bastogne has remained the same as during the war with tanks guarding the city and some of the shells that were once houses still standing. I only wish that this week of celebrating could be put on TV,’ she said, ‘so people in this country would know how some foreigners feel about America even today.’  While in Holland the Manns were guests of Kies Wittebrood and his son who live in a suburb of Amsterdam. They did much sightseeing...” (long article of their trip and sights; Dav. Times: 11-21-1974)

Eventually, he began setting type, which at that time was done by hand.  After that, he worked for publishers in Davenport, Odessa and Harrington, and was affectionately known as ‘Red’ by his colleagues. In 1991, the retired Nelson donated a relic of his printing career, a 90-year old Chandler and Price job press once used at the Harrington Citizen, to the Lincoln County Historical Museum. Mr Nelson had purchased the press after the Harrington Citizen was sold and used it for hobby printing.  Mr Nelson, who served three and a half years in the Navy, was a charter member of the Davenport Veterans of Foreign Wars.  Survivors include his wife Margaret at the home; one sister, Marian Hagan of Kalispell, MT; and numerous nieces and nephews. “Shulz refuses to slow down after 92 years.  Being 90-plus years doesn’t have to slow a person down, at least not Frieda Shulz of Reardan. This week, the elderly Reardanite has a variety of things planned, including three bridge games with friends, as well as a perm, senior citizens meeting and a hearing test. A lifelong area resident, Frieda has lived most of her 92 years in Reardan. She was born to the Carstens family on a farm just north of Reardan and lived there until she moved into town when she was 5.  All of her schooling was in Reardan, where she was a champion tennis player. After she finished high school, she was able to go on to college. She attended what is now Washington State University, getting a degree in education.  Even though she and Hugo were a big thing, they didn’t get married as soon as she was out of school. In those days, women teachers had to retire from teaching as soon as they got married and she didn’t want to.  ‘I had to show my folks I would do something with my education,’ she said with a twinkle in her eye, ‘It was during the Depression and times were hard for all of us.’  Although many things have changed over the years, many things have stayed the same.  Frieda doesn’t see a lot of difference in the makeup of the town. She and friends visit, but she feels folks go into Spokane much more now than they did when she was a girl.  During those years, going to the city once a year for a big day at Natatorium Park, where there was a merry-go-round, a slide that went down into a small pool, bumper cars and all sorts of concessions, was always a treat.  After she and Hugo were married and their two children, Janice and Keith, were born, Frieda kept plenty busy caring for them.  Her life has been busy ever since. From those two children she has eight grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. For all of those eight grandchildren, she has knit an afghan and some of the great grandchildren have them.  Frieda keeps busy even after moving from her farm home into a duplex, where household responsibilities won’t wear her down. She still drives in town and she and her friends gather often for a potluck lunch and then a bit of bridge, played by ‘Reardan rules’.”  (Dav. Times: 8-15-1996)

“Funeral service for Reardan area native Herbert August Wendlandt will be held this Saturday at 11 a.m. at Hazen & Jaeger Funeral Home, Spokane .  Mr Wendlandt passed away Jan 16, 1998 in Spokane . He was 94.  He was born Nov 4, 1903, four miles southwest of Reardan, the oldest son of August and Hulda Wendlandt. When he started school at Locust Grove one mile north of their home, he couldn’t speak English, as his family spoke High German at home. During his early years in school, he told stories of using slates to write on, as well as playing kick the can, marbles and baseball at recess. He also recalled the teacher bringing water in a milk pail, form which everyone drank out of with a dipper.  When Herb was 10 years old, the Wendlandt family moved three miles northeast of Edwall. He attended Clover Dale School , a one-room school house located a quarter mile south of their home. He attended third through sixth grades there, then seventh and eighth grades at Edwall Grade School . During those years, all farm boys in the seventh and eighth grades stayed out of school four to six weeks in the fall and four weeks in the spring to do field work, and Herb was no different. The family attended the German Methodist Church in Edwall, located where the present Methodist church is now.  In 1924, Herb attended Washington State College and was in ROTC. He took an auto mechanics and blacksmithing course. He met Mary Ellen Halverson at the Methodist Sunday School at Waukon when he was 19 and she was 17. They were married three years later on Nov 14, 1925, at her home near Waukon. They lived with Herb’s parents for a year.  At one time, Mr Wendlandt got a job plowing for two months for a neighbor. He used his own eight horses, receiving $20 a month and feed. His years of plowing dated back to when he was 7 years old and continued until he was 92—a total of 85 years.  Mr Wendlandt and his family attended the Evangelical Church in Reardan.
