Tierney,
Adella M (in 1-58) d. 1902
“… Little Adel was only eight years two months and eight days old. Her home was in Harrington. Three years ago she and an older sister were placed as boarders at this Academy, wherefrom they were to receive a convent education. The little one was ill only a little more than a day. Pneumonia caused her death, all the skill of human power and the care of loving hands were unable to save her for God had willed her death, that she might live with Him. Dear parents, do not mourn; your little darling has only gone before, and is anxiously watching for the hark that will carry you over the stream of time to join her in the endless hymn of praise that will resound forever in the Heavenly Courts. Kind brothers and loving sisters, do not weep for her, she is with the angels above. Kind teachers and schoolmates, how sadly we will miss the sweet smiling face of dear Adel, as we assemble in our class room. Yes we shall miss her but in a few short years we hope to meet her on the golden Shore where a parting word is never uttered…” (excerpt of Sprague Times: 2-20-1903; did not obtain the whole item) “Within the flower-lined casket she was laid, Without a tear, without a moan; The very life blood our hearts seemed stayed, Earth’s light to deepest darkness gone. We laid our darling down without a sigh, For grief, for words was all too deep; our anguished hearts could send but one cry, ‘O God, in heaven, our darling keep’. We know our darling’s shining form will wait, Beyond this world, where grief’s dark night Enshrouds our saddened lives, at heaven’s gate. We’ll meet our child where all is light.” “Mr Buchanan, the undertaker, accompanied the remains of Adel Turney (sic) to Harrington Thursday.” (Sprague Times: 2-20-1903)

Tierney, James Sr.,
James Tierney, after an illness of four weeks, during
which time he gradually grew weaker, died at the home of his son, Jack Tierney,
in Harrington, Sunday forenoon, and was buried from the Catholic Church, Rev
Father L. Brucker officiating. A large procession of friends and pioneer
acquaintances followed him to his last resting place in the Catholic cemetery.
James Tierney was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Feb 1843. He endured the hardships of
a trip across the plains in 1860, and settled in CA, where he resided until the
fall of 1896, when he came to Harrington, where, as had been the rule of his
life, he followed the independent calling of agriculture. The next year he
brought his family and here they resided until about four years ago, when he
retired from active life and with them removed to Seattle. In his death, a wife,
seven sons, two daughters, a sister and a brother are left to mourn the loss of
a devoted husband and an indulgent and kind hearted father and brother. He was
stern, gruff and taciturn in appearance, but kindly and generous beneath the
crust. His wife, sons Jack, J. F., James, Leonard, Thomas, and Raymond, daughters
May and Grace and brother J. J. were with him unto the end. A brother in Los
Angeles, sister in Dakota and two sons, William H and George M., in Seward and
Fairbanks, were not present. James Tierney always had a smile, a handshake and a
good word for everyone; was cheerful and full of good humor and will long be
remembered as a good neighbor and kind friend… (Citizen-18 Sept 1908)
-
Tierney, James Jr.
The body of James Tierney arrived last Sunday and
burial occurred that day in the Harrington Cemetery. Deceased was 33 years of
age and died of influenza at his home in Leadville, Colorado. He was engaged in
farming with his brother William, who accompanied the body and was here for the
funeral. Deceased was born in Humboldt Co, CA and lived in Harrington for six
years, leaving here about ten years ago. Deceased was unmarried. He is survived
by a mother, Mrs. James Tierney, two sisters, Mrs. O’Brien of Seattle and Miss
Grace Tierney of Cedarville, CA; and six brothers, Jack Tierney of Harrington;
Will, Leonard, Ray and Tom of Cedarville, CA; and Leonard of Alaska. The
relatives were all in attendance at the funeral but George and Leonard. On
account of the epidemic here it was not possible to hold a public funeral.

Tierney, John J.,
John J Tierney, ill most of last fall, and who was
taken to Sacred Heart hospital in Spokane Dec 9, died there Saturday evening,
Dec 16 at 6 o’clock. He was born near Ottawa, Canada, May 9, 1861 and was 72
years, 7 months and 7 days old at the time of his death. He is survived by his

The funeral services were held Tuesday forenoon at 10 o’clock at St Francis
church, the Rev Father Shiel officiating. A large attendance of friends of a
lifetime’s accumulation gathered to pay their last respects to their pioneer
friend, neighbor and acquaintance. Father Shiel in his eulogy paid many fine
compliments to his sterling worth as a Christian husband, father and neighbor.
He was a lifelong and faithful member of the Catholic church and a member of the
Holy Names Society for Men. The pallbearers were Chas E. Moore, Jim McKinnon,
Francis Rieth, Ed Ring Sr., Charles Fallert and E. W. Huber…. Hennessey &
Calloway, morticians of Spokane, were in charge and interment was in St Francis
Cemetery, Harrington. Mr. Tierney came to Washington in company with John F. Green
and C. W. Bethel (both deceased) in 1884, the year the NP drove its golden spike
at Tacoma. They drove through from CA with Mr. Tierney’s team, Mr. Green’s
hack and Mr. Bethel’s saddle. They were 30 days on the road and averaged about
30 miles a day. Their route lay through the wilderness of Oregon—the eastern
portion. They came through Malheur and John Day country, crossed Power River,
and had to pay for going through toll gates in the mountains three times at the
rate of $1 per gate. At one time he was an extensive farmer in the Harrington
Wheat Belt and was among the pioneers who helped to demonstrate the value of
this section as an agricultural country by bringing into cultivation his quota
of acres. (Citizen-22 Dec 1933)

Tierney, Katherine E .,
Died, at the home of her parents, Mr. & Mrs. James
J. Tierney, Harrington, WA, Thursday night, Feb 21, 1929, Katherine Elizabeth
Tierney, aged 16 years, 10 months and 20 days. The funeral services were
conducted from St Francis Catholic Church, the Rev Father Shiel officiating, at
Harrington, Saturday, Feb 23, 19129 at 10:30 AM. Katherine, a year ago last spring, was one of Harrington’s
star tennis players, and was strong and athletically inclined, but shortly after
that she was attacked with diabetes and for some time her recovery was despaired
of at that time, but she seemed to rally, came home from Sacred Heart Hospital,
and re-entered the Harrington High School last September. She took a bad cold
and began ailing Friday the 15th inst, and took to her bed. Her cold
developed into the flu. Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock she lapsed into an
unconscious state from which she never recovered, and she passed beyond this
mortal realm Thursday night. Her sister, Mildred, who is a nurse at the Sacred
Heart Hospital in Spokane, came home and nursed her throughout her illness. But
everything that loved ones and medical skill could do, was of no avail. Mr. &
Mrs. Tierney are pioneer residents of Harrington, Mr. Tierney coming here in the
early ‘80’s. The funeral was attended by old and young alike, one of the
largest held here in years. The wealth of beautiful floral offerings attested
the high esteem in which Katherine was held by friends and schoolmates. Besides
her parents, Katherine leaves to mourn her loss, 5 sisters and one
brother—Eva, teaching at Nespelem, WA, and who was here for the funeral;
Mildred, nurse at Sacred Heart Hospital; Margaret, June Elanor and Johnnie, all
at home. A sister of Mrs. Tierney, Mrs. Frank Hellinger of Devon, MT, arrived
Sunday morning too late for the funeral, and remained over during the week.

Tierney, Lawrence
The old Harrington hotel went up in a blaze Wednesday
morning at three o’clock. It is not known how the fire started but supposedly
from the kitchen stove some way. John Leathers and Frank Brown were the first to
see the fire and give the alarm but before the fire department could get out,
the building, a huge frame structure, was a mass of flames. All that could be
done was to save the adjoining buildings, and fortunately there was no wind to
carry the burning pieces and by diligent work the flames were kept from
spreading. The building was owned by Geo Wilson, who was in Wenatchee at the
time. The total loss is in the neighborhood of $5,000, partially covered by
insurance. Henry Fay was running the hotel. The hotel was erected 20 years ago
this summer, being one of the old landmarks of the town. From the time the fire
was discovered until the walls were down was probably not more than 30 minutes.
The sad part of the fire was the death of Lawrence Tierney, who was sleeping in
room 9, and was evidently suffocated by the smoke before the flames reached him,
as he was found lying as if in bed, but burnt beyond recognition. He had been in
bed but an hour or two, thus accounting for his sound sleeping. “Larry” as
he was known was a young man 19 years and 10 months old, the son of John
Tierney, a pioneer and prominent farmer who lives a few miles northwest of
Harrington. He was practically raised in this vicinity and his death coming as
it did was a shock to the whole community. Interment was made in the Harrington
Cemetery yesterday at 11 o’clock, under the auspices of the Forresters, of
which lodge he was a member. Funeral services were conducted at the Catholic
church, Father Van de Van officiating. Several of the lodgers barely escaped so
rapidly did the fire spread, and some got out with singed hair and many were
only partially dressed. But for the efforts of those who first discovered the
fire, the calamity would have been even greater, as every room was taken. All
that was in the building was lost and considerable money was left in the rooms
by the lodgers in their haste to escape. (Citizen-23 Sept 1904) (edit: Lawrence
Tierney died Sept 21, 1904.)
