Schmitz, Bartholomew

Death came suddenly and quietly to our fellow townsman, Bart Schmitz, Friday evening (Sept 11, 1941) while he was eating his evening meal with his family at his home. He had spent a normal day, worked in the yard, and was feeling well. He suffered a heart attack, slumped in his chair and passed away very soon. Born in Germany, just across the river from Luxemburg, Nov 1, 1874, when he was fourteen years old Bartholomew Schmitz came with his parents to the US, settling in MN.  In 1888, Mr .Schmitz came to the Rocklyn region where he cut timber from Hawk Creek to build his log house which he clinked with mud. The first couple of years on the homestead were hard financially and Mr. Schmitz worked in a Davenport butcher shop and his wife, assisted by neighbors, managed the farm. Left a widower with five small children, Mr. Schmitz placed his little ones in a home until he could better care for them. As one of Harrington’s early-day businessmen, he opened up a meat market in town in 1897. Being afflicted with rheumatism, he sold his shop and traveled for his health, visiting sanitariums at Medical Lake, Spokane, Soap Lake and Green River on the west side of the Cascades. In 1903, Mr. Schmitz made a trip to MN, and returned with Mrs. Schmitz as a bride and she survives him. Mr. Schmitz was a member of the city council when the present city well was drilled. He was interested in an adequate system and worked toward that end. Rosary was said at the Schmitz residence Sunday evening at 8 o’clock and funeral services were held at 10 o’clock Monday morning from St Francis church, with Rev Joseph Fleck officiating. Pallbearers were C. E. Moore, E. W. Huber, J. F. Rieth, M. V. Yale, E. M. Logan and Clarence Gooley. Burial was in St Francis Cemetery. Gundersons Funeral Home was in charge. Surviving Mr. Schmitz are his widow, Tillie; four sons, John, Fontaine, MT; Bart, Spokane; Matt, Olympia; and Hubert at home; two daughters, Mrs. Edward McGoldrick, Spokane; and Mrs. Lester Warren, Palouse; 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Attending the funeral services from out of town were Mr. Schmitz’s children and their families: Mr. & Mrs. Matt Schmitz, John Schmitz, Mr. & Mrs. Bart Schmitz Jr. and family, Mr. & Mrs. McGoldrick, and Mr. & Mrs. Lester Warren and daughter Ferne; others included his niece, Mrs. A. B. E. Murray of Spokane; Mr. & Mrs. Art Hanke, Spokane; Mr. & Mrs. Chas Schille, Dishman; Mrs. Schmitz’s sister, Mrs. W. J. The funeral was held Monday, Sept 29 at 11 o’clock from St Francis Catholic church, Father Shiel officiating, and interment was in the Harrington Cemetery. Stone, Robert

Robert Stone was born Dec 18, 1889 at Coquille, Oregon, to Colbert William and Alice (Stilwell) Stone. His parents passed away when Bob was a young man, and he spent most of his early years at Harrington, where his younger sister Lulu Stone was reared in the home of her aunt, Mrs. Henry Gohlman (Ruby Stone) and family. June 25, 1935 Bob married Miss Cecilia Nacke, at Cottonwood, Idaho, and the couple made Harrington their home. Bob was employed at the Odessa Union, at Harrington, most of the time as company agent here. He retired several years ago and was succeeded by Don Zicha in the office. Bob served with the armed forces in World War I. He enlisted in the army in July 1917, trained at Camp Murray, Washington, in North Carolina, and at Camp Mills, Long Island. He was in Co I, 161 Infantry, 41st Division, and later was transferred to Co F, 102 Infantry. He left the States Dec 12, 1917 for “Over There.”  Bob was in the thickest of fighting. Among the historic battles he was in were St Mihiel, Verdun (Apr 2, 1918); Belleau Wood (June 6, 1918); Chateau-Thierry (June 21, 1918); Meuse-Argonne (Sept 26-Nov 11, 1918) “We went in with 197 men (the last battle) and came out with 33” wrote Bob in his diary. Again, “We were 14 days without taking off our clothes—slept in dirt and muc.” Another diary entry: “I sold my watch for 40 francs, to buy something to eat.”  Bob was gassed in one of the engagements and was hospitalized at Hyeres, in Southern France, “Where we could look out from the hospital and see the Mediterranean,” he wrote in his diary.  Returning to the States he was discharged in May, 1919 and returned to Harrington. In recent years the 41st Division has held annual reunions in Spokane, as near as possible to Nov 11-Armistice Day (now called Veterans Day). Bob attended most of them. The past year Bob’s health failed gradually until the last three or so months, when his illness grew progressively worse. His daughter, Paula, a nurse in a San Francisco hospital, came to help her mother care for him at the family home. He was hospitalized periodically but always was able to return home. When his care required more equipment than home nursing can provide, Mrs Stone applied at the Lincoln Nursing home for his admittance, but there was no vacancy, and last week he was taken to the Ritzville Nursing Home. He passed away there Tuesday morning, Feb 2, 1965. Strate Funeral Home had charge of the last rites. Rosary was recited for Bob Thursday night Feb 4, at the Strate Mortuary, and last rites were conducted Friday morning, Feb 5 from St Francis of Assisi church, Harrington. Requiem High Mass was sung. Mary Louise Horak of Odessa was organist and the combined Odessa and Harrington choir officiated. Rev John O’Dea gave the mass sermon; Dennis Birge, Mark Birge and Alan Stone were servers. Interment was in St Francis Cemetery where the Rt Rev Monsignor Jerome Stoffel of Utah conducted the services. Pallbearers were Adrian Werner, C. A. Gooley, Frank Tate, Donald Coombs, Robert V. Adams, and Ross Reiman of Odessa. Members of Post 95, American Legion attended the services in a body. At the cemetery Legionnaires ceremoniously folded the American Flag that draped the casket, and presented it to Mrs. Stone. Surviving Bob Stone are his wife, Cecilia at home; daughter Mary Paula, nurse in San Francisco; son, Robert George Stone, graduate student on fellowship at University of Illinois; brother, Tom Stone, Harrington; sisters, Mrs. Lu Johnson of Marysville and Mrs. Lottie Collins, Bonners Ferry, Idaho. Relatives coming for the last rites were Fred H Nacke, Phoenix, brother of Mrs. Stone; Mr. & Mrs. Floyd Irwin (niece of Mrs. Stone); Gertrude, Irwin and Floyd Irwin Jr. of Pendleton; Art Harmes, Pullman (brother-in-law of Mrs. Stone); among out of town friends present were Mr .& Mrs. Elmer Cobb, Mr. & Mrs. Ed Ring, and Charles Scanlan, all of Spokane. Following the services, Mrs. Roy Talkington and Mrs. C. A. Gooley were at the Stone home to serve lunch to the out-of-town kin and friends who had come for the rites. St Clare Altar Society and other friends brought gifts of food for the lunch. Rev W. J. Brennan, for many years a priest here, now in Cheney, telephoned sympathy to Mrs. Stone. Monsignor Stoffel, son of Mrs. Stoffel, and the late C. M. Stoffel, and a nephew of the late Mrs .John E Russell and Miss Emma Walsh, was a frequent visitor to Harrington in youth, and early days of priesthood. He is currently a teacher in a Utah school.
