Arlt:  Lawrence ‘Mutt’ Arlt, age 83, died Oct 21, at Sacred Heart Medical Center. Burial was at Emanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Ritzville. He was born Feb 29, 1916 at Packard, the son of William and Lizzie (Schwerin) Arlt Jr. He graduated from Ritzville High School in 1935. In 1939 he took over and operated the family Crab Creek Ranch. Nov 10, 1940 he married Viola Agnes Burghard. They retired from the ranch in 1994. He is survived by his wife, 3 sons (Tom, Michael and Larry), one daughter, Diane L. Arlt Day, and one sister, Ruth Heimbigner of Ephrata. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother. (notes from Odessa Record: 10-28-1999) 

Bierman:  Richard August Bierman.—Survived by his wife, Viola Bierman, at the home, Ritzville. One brother, Edward Bierman, Ritzville; four sisters, Helene Miller, Portland, OR; Clara Surfus, Portland, OR; Elsa Smith, Salem, OR; Mabel Lehman, Portland, OR; numerous nieces and nephews. Member of Fraternal Order of Masons, Ritzville Grange, Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Funeral services April 23, Thursday, at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church at 2 p.m.  Rev Floyd Yokers officiating. Burghard:  Fred Claus Burghard.—Passed away Thursday, Nov 27, at his home, Rte 1, Ritzville.  Survived by his wife, Lillie Burghard, at the home; 4 daughters, Mrs. Lawrence Arlt of Ritzville; Mrs. Neil Hughes, Ritzville; Mrs. Earl Meise of Odessa; Shirley Burghard, at the home; 5 sons, Virgil, Oregon City, OR; Herbert, Odessa; James at the home; Donald, U S Army in Korea; and Raymond, at the home; one sister, Mrs. Fred Luiten, Ritzville; 11 grandchildren. He was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church and Marcellus Grange, Ritzville. Buscher:  Frederick A. Buscher died April 8, 1993 with interment at Ritzville at the Emanuel Lutheran Cemetery. He was born Nov 25, 1917 on the family farm near Ritzville, the son of Christian Frederick and Helena Wagner Buscher. He was graduated from Ritzville High School in 1934 and married Laura Heimbigner in 1944. They lived and farmed at Tokio until they retired and moved to Ritzville in 1989. Dehnel:  Martha I. Dehnel.—Her home was at 105 W 4th, Ritzville. Survived by 2 brothers, Richard Manke, Espanola, WA; Ted R. Manke, Ritzville; numerous nieces and nephews. Deking:  Ernest H. Deking.—His home Ritzville, WA. Survived by his wife, Glenndora Deking, at the home, 2 sisters, Mrs. Dannie Haight, Pasco, WA, Mrs. Leonard Swedo, Spokane; one uncle, William Sickman, Ritzville, WA; numerous nieces and nephews. A member of the Emmanuel Lutheran  Church of Ritzville, member of the Marcellus Grange. Funeral services Monday, Jan 10, at 2 p.m. form the Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Pastor Floyd Yokers officiating. Derr:  “Funeral services were held from the Ritzville Lutheran church on Monday afternoon for Alvon L. Derr, Rev Roland O. Wittrock of Lind officiating, with burial in the Lutheran Cemetery there.  Active pallbearers were cousins, including Wesley Eckhardt, Walter Thiel, Richard Buddrius, Floyd Derr, Edward Smith and Roland Kissler. Honorary pallbearers included Ray Scheller, Reuben Scheller, David Birge and five men from the office of the insurance company with which Mr. Derr was employed.  Born May 8, 1912, near Odessa, Mr. Derr had lived in this community most of his life, operating the Odessa Bakery following his graduation from high school here, and his marriage to Miss Hilda Wagner of Ritzville. In recent years he has made his home at Spokane, until purchasing the Ritzville bakery.  Survivors include his widow and a son, Robert, at the home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Derr Jr. of Odessa; three sisters, Mrs. Erma Kissler, Mrs. Caroline Hemmerling and Mrs. Ruth Suchland, Odessa, and two brothers, Iorwerth of Van Nuys, CA, and First Lieutenant Arthur Derr, with the air force in Memphis, TN.” (Odessa Record: 5-31-1951) “Alvon L. Derr, 39, Ritzville, resident of Odessa most of his life, died there early Wednesday afternoon, of cancer, relatives were notified. He has been ill for nearly a year. Derr:  Hilda Viola Derr died May 31, 2008, in Ritzville at the age of 93. She was a life-long resident of Ritzville, where she was born Jan 18, 1915. She was the daughter of Jacob B Wagner and Mary Catherine Weber, German immigrants from Frank, Russia. On June 10, 1935, she married Alvon Lorain Derr in Ritzville. They had one son, Robert L Derr. They owned and operated the bakery in Odessa until the early 1950s. She then worked for Safeway for the next 26 years. Hilda is survived by her grandson Benjamin Derr (Erin) of Cleveland, Ohio; granddaughter Bethany (Andy) Sparks of Boston, Mass.; great grandson Brannon Derr, great granddaughter Jaiden Sparks and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.  She is preceded in death by her parents, Her husband Alvon, her son Robert L, her brothers Alvin, Victor E, Harold H, Elmer L, Arthur E and one sister Mary. Hilda was an active member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Ritzville. She was a life member of the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia and a member of the Big Bend Chapter of AHSGR.  Funeral services were held at Emmanuel Lutheran Church Monday, June 9, 2008. Elliott:  Sterling E. Elliott, 49, died early Sunday morning at the St Lukes hospital, where he had been rushed after being ground beneath a wheat drill while working on farming operations at the Ernest Hardt ranch Saturday. Funeral services were held from the Emmanuel Lutheran Church on Wednesday afternoon, the Rev Benj. W. Schuldheisz officiating, with burial in the church cemetery adjoining. Mr. Elliott is survived by his wife, the former Helen Horak of Odessa, and four children, Mildred, Sterling, Edward and James, at the home; his mother, Mrs. Elias (Mary) Elliott, Keytsville, MO; and two sisters, Mrs. Tom Ball, Keytsville, and Mrs. W. W. Taylor, Twin Falls, Idaho.  Particulars of the accident were meager. He had been operating a tractor with the single disc attached, had come to a complete stop, it appeared. It is believed that the tractor started moving on the slope of a hill and he was caught beneath the drill. He received bad fractures and cuts. Born Sept 12, 1899, at Keytsville, MO, he had lived in this area for some time, and for several years at Wenatchee. He came from there to work on the B A Oliver ranch, and has been employed at the Ernest Hardt ranch two seasons. The family made their home on the former Gering place, and the children attended the Ritzville school.” (Odessa Record: 3-31-1949)

Greenwalt:  “Funeral services for Peter G. ‘Pete’ Greenwalt were held last Friday at the Emanuel Lutheran Church in Ritzville. Mr. Greenwalt, who was 78 years old, was born and raised on the family farm south of Odessa. He attended rural schools in the area. He established a towing service in Ritzville in 1940. Later he began Pete’s Garage, a repair and towing business. The garage was destroyed by fire in 1949, but was rebuilt, and in 1965 the business became the Chrysler distributorship in Ritzville. He continued to operate Pete’s Garage until retiring in 1976. His two sons, Ron and Ray, took over the business. Mr. Greenwalt married Lydia A. Leisle in 1945. He was a WW II Army veteran. He was a member of the Emanuel Lutheran Church. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Art Greenwalt, in 1940, and John Greenwalt in 1991. He is survived by his wife, at the home in Ritzville, two daughters, Diane Peltier, of Denver; and Nancy Skeman, of Spokane; three sons, Larry Greenwalt, of Harrington, and Ronald Greenwalt and Raymond Greenwalt, both of Ritzville; two sisters, Yetta Melcher of Odessa; and Emma Bischoff, of Ritzville; and six grandchildren.” (Odessa Record: 2-11-1993)( edit TS: 1914-1993)  

Hein:  Conrad Hein, Jr.—His home Harrington, WA. Hein:  Katie M. Hein, of Harrington, died Monday night at the Davenport Nursing Home at the age of 77 years. She was born July 14, 1896. Funeral services are planned for Friday, April 12 at 11 a.m. at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Ritzville, with Pastor Duane Ulleland officiating. Interment will be at the Lutheran Cemetery in Ritzville. Mrs. Hein is survived by one son, Virgil Hein of Mohler; three daughters, Mrs. Frances Manke of Harrington, Mrs. Virginia Wheeler of Seattle; and Mrs. Florence Norby of Kalispell, MT; 10 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; 3 brothers, Emanuel Becker of Odessa, Fred Becker of Harrington, and Henry Becker of Ritzville; two sisters, Mrs. Reuben Derr and Mrs. Walter Thiel, both of Ritzville.” (Odessa Record: 4-11-1974) (edit: TS 1896-1974)

Hille:  Emil Hille, 51, of Ritzville, was killed early Tuesday in a head-on collision on a county road there shrouded by heavy, freezing fog.  The state patrol said Hille’s small foreign-made car collided with one driven by Ronald Danekas, 16, Ritzville, about 1 ½ miles north of the city. Danekas was reported in shock after the accident, but uninjured. Hille’s son, Bruce, is married to the former Miss Yvonne Hopp of Odessa.” (Odessa Record: Jan 1961 scrapbook) (edit: TS 1908-1961) 

Johnston: Freda, Age 83.—Of Richland, WA, died on Feb 6, 2008 at Hospice House in Kennewick, WA. Born in Richland (Eagle Valley), Oregon to John and Magdalena Nave on Oct 17, 1924, the eighth of nine children. Graduated valedictorian at Eagle Valley High School in 1942. She had a varied work history, a contract rural mail route in the Ritzville area, and retired from the Adams County Auditors office after many years of service. Active at her church in Ritzville, and served many years as President of the Ladies Circle at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, a 50-year member of the Rebecca Lodge. Widowed in 1993 with the death of her husband Roy, after 48 years of marriage. She is survived by daughter Shannon Benzel (husband Herb) of Ritzville, WA; son Keith Johnston (wife Laurie) of Richland, WA; six grandchildren (Marty, Cori, Roni, Josh, Ian and Morgan); two great grandchildren; sister Betty Wieber of Hillsboro, OR; and 34 nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held March 8, 2008 at 11 a.m. at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Ritzville, WA. A private inurnment will be held at the Lutheran Cemetery in Ritzville. Kechter:  “Mrs. Katherine Elizabeth Kechter, 69, died at her home in Ritzville Sunday evening. She was born in Kulb, Russia, and came to Ritzville 40 years ago. She is survived by her widower, Jacob; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Christel, Tacoma; and Mrs. Bertha Klemmer, Longview; four sons, Carl, Ritzville; Victor and Edward, Tacoma; and Fred, Wheeler, WA; one sister, Mrs. Mary Henkel, Tacoma; and 3 grandchildren. Koch:  Freda Koch.—Her home 205 W Cherry, Ritzville.  Survived by three daughters, Verna Koch at the home; Mrs. E. L. Kramer:  Agnes (Clark) Kramer, a former Odessa area resident, died Feb 18, 2003, at her home in Spokane. She was born March 12, 1920, in Newport. She was graduated from Harrington High School in 1940. She married Victor Kramer on Nov 24, 1939 in Coeur d’Alene. She is survived by her husband, four children, one brother, Francis (and Helen) Bryarly, of Harrington. She is preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Mabel Clark, four sisters, and one grandson. Graveside services will be held at Ritzville Lutheran Cemetery. (notes from Odessa Record: 2-20-2003)

Kramer:  Vic Kramer died July 27 at his home in Spokane at the age of 97. He was born July 20, 1915, to Peter B. and Marie Kramer on the Kramer homestead in Lincoln County. He attended a one-room country school before attending Odessa and Davenport schools, graduating from Odessa in 1933.  He married Agnes Clark in 1939 and farmed until 1980 when they moved to Spokane. He enjoyed visiting with people, playing games and making a joke out of a situation or telling a joke. For his enjoyment, as well as that of his audience, he loved playing accordion, a memory none of us will forget.  Vic was active in the Odessa Grange, Marcellus Wheat Growers Association, Shriners and the Masonic Lodge, serving as Grand Master in the 1950s. When he moved to Spokane he became involved with the Heritage Congregational Church, volunteering for various chores, as well as the Paper Packing Group. He attended Southside Senior Center and participated in pinochle and cribbage games and Thursday-night dances. He was an excellent dancer.  He is survived by his four children, Jan Branting, Spokane; Darrel and (Jan) Kramer, Everett; Errol and (Mary) Kramer, Odessa; and Myrna Izidor, Seattle. He is also survived by his grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren, as well as nephews and nieces.  Vic was preceded in death by his parents, his nine siblings, his wife, Agnes of 63 years; his grandson, Asawa Izidor and his son-in-law, Ray Branting.  Graveside services were held August 1 at the Ritzville Lutheran Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at Hamblen Presbyterian Church in Spokane.  Strate Funeral Home, Davenport, is caring for the family.”  (Odessa Record: 8-02-2012)

Lobe:  Lewis Lobe, age 86.—Passed away Nov 14, 2009 in Ritzville, WA. Born Jan 31, 1923 in Odessa, WA to John and Lydia (Reich) Lobe. Attended schools in Lind and Washtucna until seventh grade, had to quit school in order to help on his father’s farm because his father had become ill. After working for several farmers, Lewis moved on to Seattle, where he worked for the Boeing Company, then moved to Portland, where he worked as a welder in the shipyard. He and his brother-in-law, Carl Dammel, worked together in the Oregon Steel Foundry until Lewis enlisted in the Army in 1943. He was deployed to Kobe, Japan where he eventually was placed in charge of an Ordinance Depot Shop, supervised 150 men and was asked by General McArthur to become a warrant officer. Proud to have been asked, Lewis chose to return home. Lewis was a hard worker. He worked for and retired form the State Highway Department. Not able to stay idle, Lewis and his wife, Arlene, moved to Hillsborough, Oregon for a short time. He eventually returned to Ritzville; where he worked for over 20 more years as a manager for Big Bend Fertilizer. Lewis is survived by his wife, Arlene, the love of his life for 61 years. Also survived by his brothers: Everett (Dolly) Lobe of Wenatchee and Gene (Naomi) Lobe of Bremerton, sister, Ruth Gillis of Ritzville and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents; brother, Otto Lobe, and sisters, Hulda Lobe, Esther Gust and Edna Dammel. Visitation will be Thursday Nov 19, 2009 from 12 Noon to 5 p.m. at Danekas Funeral Home, Ritzville. Funeral Services will be Friday Nov 20, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Luiten:  Gertrude A. Luiten.—Her home, 206 W 5th, Ritzville, WA. She is survived by her husband, Orval, at the home; one daughter, Darlene Elder, Lake Havasu, AZ; two sisters, Mrs. Henrietta Breithgham, Yakima, WA; and Mrs. Bertha Urbach, Spokane, WA; 5 brothers, Conrad Rehn, Burley, ID; Alexander Rehn and Rubin Rehn, both of Ritzville; Fred Rehn of Spokane and Carl Rehn of Tacoma; 3 grandchildren. She was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Ritzville; The Women’s Christian Club and Grandmothers’ Club. Luiten:  Helen W. Luiten of Ritzville died Dec 4, 1989 in Spokane. She was born at Tokio on June 24, 1910 to Frederick and Lena Wagner Buscher. She married Lester Luiten in Nov 1937 at Ritzville. Burial was at Emanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Ritzville. (notes from Odessa Record: 12-14-1989)

Luiten: “Funeral services for Lester Vernon Luiten, a native of Lamona and a longtime resident of the Lamona, Odessa and Ritzville areas, were held Oct 3 at the Emanuel Lutheran Church in Ritzville.  Mr. Luiten died Sept 27 in Fullerton, CA. He had moved to CA in 1989.  He was born Sept 17, 1910 at the family home near Lamona. He was the only child of Gerhard and Theresia Luiten.  After attending school in Odessa, he farmed with his father and worked on dairy farms nearby. In 1934, he purchased his own farm in the Lamona area.  He married Helen Buscher on Nov 28, 1937, at the Buscher home near Tokio. They lived on the Lamona farm for 38 years, retiring in 1975, when they moved to Ritzville. Mr. Luiten was a member of the WA Assoc. of Wheat Growers. He had been a member of the Lamona volunteer firefighters and had served on the board of directors of the Odessa Union Warehouse Coop and the Lincoln County ASCS. He was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, where he once was the Sunday school superintendent and served on the church council and cemetery committee.  After Helen Luiten died in 1989, Lester moved to Walnut, CA, with his daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Robin Hill. He was hospitalized last June and had been in ill health since that time.  The Rev Robert B Lester, co-pastor of Emanuel Lutheran Church, officiated at the funeral. Prelude and postlude were delivered by Amanda Niederkleine. Soloist was Dr Bruce Hille.  Interment followed at the Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Ritzville. Mr. Luiten is survived by two daughters, Joyce Hill, of Walnut, CA, and Connie Susman, of Van Nuys, CA.” (Odessa Record: 10-10-1991)

Maier:  Marjorie A. Maier, 81, a lifelong resident of Ritzville, WA passed away Thursday morning, Apr 17, 2003 at the Life Care Center at Ritzville. Born July 28, 1921, Marjorie was one of six children born to William F and Dorothy L. (Wendelschafer) Wellsandt. She graduated from Ritzville High School in 1939 and worked at Sielaff’s Variety, Ritzville Trading Co, and Rummers before moving to Spokane during WW II. While in Spokane she worked at the Crescent Department Store. Marjorie married Lawrence R Maier May 8, 1948 and they made their home together in Ritzville. Before her children were born Marge worked at Pfann’s Pharmacy and Campbell’s Furniture Store. In 1967 she became the church secretary at Emanuel Lutheran, a position she held until she retired after 22 years in 1989. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Maier, in 1968, and by sisters, Geraldine and Genevieve, and brothers, Howard, Lloyd and Gerald. Surviving are two sons, Douglas L. Maier and wife, Joan Lynn of Fromberg, MT, and Craig R. Maier of Gericho, VT. Moeller: 

  “Auto Driver Dies; 26 Bus Riders Hurt.  None of the 26 persons hurt in a bus-car smash near Harrington, Wash., yesterday was in critical condition in Spokane hospitals last night, although the car driver, William F Moeller, Sr., 64, a Harrington rancher, was killed instantly when the Greyhound double-decker smashed into his car at the left front door. The only one of the 27 persons on the bus who was not hurt was 2-year old Tracey Lee Manywounds, daughter of Carmelita Manywounds, Williston, ND.  Mrs. Manywounds, 24, was released from Sacred Heart hospital after treatment of a leg injury.  Nine persons were taken to Sacred Heart and six were released after treatment. Eighteen went to Deaconess and one was released.  Two in serious condition are John Frick, 70, Odessa, Wash., who suffered head and internal injuries, and Roger Carlyle, 23, Fairchild Air Force Base, who has a severe cut on the head and possible fractures. They are in Deaconess.  Others in Deaconess are Frick’s twin brother, Jake, also of Odessa, who has a hip injury; Frank Wiley, 24, Seattle, internal injuries; Frances Langen, 22, Seattle, possible head and spine injuries; Mrs. Lorraine Wilkinson, 39, Winchester, Wash., shoulder injury; Roger Carlyle’s wife, Darlene, 22, an expectant mother, admitted for observation; Samuel Doughty, 70, Moscow, Idaho, back injury; and Mrs. Zella B. Owens, S108 Monroe, cuts.  Also at Deaconess are Francis A Baker, 73, Castle Rock, Wash., back, rib and hip injuries; his wife, Rhoda, 68, hip and chest injuries; Bobbie Davis, 26, Birmingham, Ala., rib and shoulder injuries; Grant Higgins, 64, E1407 Pacific, bruises; John F. Speck, 73, Odessa, possible internal injuries; Clyde Shanbaugh, 67, Calgary, Alta., broken ribs; and Edna Houghton, age unavailable, Seattle. Released from Deaconess after treatment for a cut was Terry Holmberg, 21, Route 5.  At Sacred Heart are the bus driver, Wesley T Jordan, 39, Seattle, who received head, arm and chest injuries; Mrs. Hattie Howard, 70, Portland, hip, rib and shoulder injuries; and Mrs. Robert Wigodsky, 30, Seattle, head, spine and rib injuries.  Their conditions were termed fair.  Released from Sacred Heart after treatment were Wilbur B Rogers, 68, Fernwood, Idaho;  Petra Jenrich, 18, Seattle; Louis F Bacon, 69, Corning, CA, and Hershel B Haynes, 33, Air Force Captain stationed at Cottonwood, Idaho, all of whom received bruises, scratches and strains.  Law officers said Moeller, alone in his car, drove out on the highway from a side road in his pasture. The bus had just come over the crest of a hill and its driver said it was impossible for him to avoid the crash.  Most passengers were asleep just before the crash, but there seemed to be no panic. At least 10 ambulances were used to transport the injured. One of the ambulances ran into the rear of another in the confusion, but no one was hurt. Fred Henke officiated and burial was in the Lutheran cemetery at Ritzville. Danekas funeral home was in charge of arrangements.  Twenty-five persons on the double-decker bus were injured in the accident, including Jake Frick and John F. Spreck, both of Odessa.  Moeller belonged to Liberty Grange of Mohler, the Harrington Lions club, Washington State Cattlemen's association, Harrington Gun club, Washington Association of Wheat Growers and the Lutheran church in Davenport.  Surviving are his wife, Agnes, at the home; one daughter, Karen, at the home; five sons, Ronald, Harold, Paul at the home; William F. Niederkleine:  Connie Niederkleine, 17, who lived on a farm near Ritzville but was a sophomore at Lind high school, died in the Ritzville hospital about five hours after the head-on accident near Odessa which claimed six lives. Three were trapped in the Anderson car after it had rolled and caught fire, with three being removed and taken to the Ritzville hospital. Reiber:  Elizabeth Reiber.—Her home was Davenport, WA. Reiber: “Funeral services were held for a longtime Davenport resident, Fred Reiber, last Monday at the Zion Lutheran Church, Davenport, under the direction of Pastor Stanley Williamsen. Mr. Reiber, 79, died at his home May 17.  He was born in Kolb, Russia, in October, 1898, and came with his family to America when he was quite young. His family settled in the Ritzville area, where Mr. Reiber later met and married his wife, Elizabeth . She died in 1974.  The couple farmed in the Ritzville area until 1940 and then moved to Rocklyn where they farmed until retirement in 1952. Upon their retirement, they moved into Davenport, where they both lived out their lives.  Mr. Reiber is survived by two sisters, Elizabeth Clouse, Denver, CO, and Hannah Laulsberry, Lakewood, CO.  He also has two surviving brothers, Carl of Denver, and Henry of Anaheim, CA. He is also survived by a sister-in-law whom the couple helped rear, Hannah Becker of Spokane . Mr. Reiff, 79, a lifetime resident of Ritzville, died Saturday. He attended school through the ninth grade, then worked for the Postal Service for 35 years. He retired in 1978. She was born in Menno, SD, and moved to Quincy, WA, with her family. They later moved to Dryden, WA, where they operated an orchard. She and her husband, Paul Reimann moved to Odessa, WA, in 1928. In 1932 they moved to Ritzville, where they farmed. Her husband died in 1982. She was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church and Hope Circle. Schell:  “Funeral services for Carl John Schell, 83, were held on Thursday, Sept 12, at the Danekas Funeral Home in Ritzville. Mr. Schell, who lived for much of his life in the Odessa area, died on Sunday, Sept 6, 1998, in Ritzville. He was born in Ruff. In 1937, he married Eleanor Melcher, and they farmed southwest of Odessa. They later purchased their own farm in the Ruff area, where they farmed until 1953. They retired in 1972 and moved to Ritzville. Mr. Schell was a deacon at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Ritzville for many years and was a member of the WA Assoc. of Wheat Growers, the Ritzville Gun Club and was a past board member of the Ritzville Warehouse Company, where he served for 12 years. SchmidtCharles Schmidt, 82, fully 50 years a resident of the Packard area, died Monday noon at his home at Ritzville, following a month’s illness. Schwisow:  “Visitation for Clara (Meyer) Schwisow, 96, will be today from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Danekas Funeral Home, Ritzville. Funeral will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Emanuel Lutheran church in Ritzville, with vault interment to follow at Emanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Mrs. Schwisow died Monday. She was born in Sutton, NE and in 1933 she moved to Ritzville where she lived with her aunt. In 1934 she married farmer Harry Schwisow and was a homemaker. She was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church and active in its women’s organizations. She and her husband moved from the farm into Ritzville in 1976. Steinmetz:  Alexander ‘Bipps’ Steinmetz, age 98, of Ritzville, WA, passed away on Friday, Sept 22, 2006. Alex was born in Odessa, WA on Nov 24, 1907 to Henry and Elizabeth (Koch) Steinmetz. He married Angeline ‘Babe’ Gleich, Apr 22, 1931 in Kennewick, WA. After living in several different places, working for Northern Pacific Railroad, they settled in Ritzville, WA in 1932. Through the years he worked for Hoefel Ford and then for many area farmers, retiring in 1989 at age 82. He was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church. Alex is survived by his wife of 75 years, Angeline ‘Babe’ of Ritzville; a brother Henry ‘Heiny’ Steinmetz of Ritzville; two sons Larry Steinmetz and wife Eleanor of Liberty Lake, WA and David Steinmetz and wife Barbara of Ritzville; a daughter-in-law Sharon Steinmetz of Moses Lake; 10 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son Lonny, a grandson Ricky, brothers Roy and Herman, sisters Marie, Ella Deking, and Esther Watkins. Werner, who had lived at Lamona in the early ‘30s, of Mary Lou Swyter of Ritzville and Christ Schiewe at Davenport were all reported to the Record office this week.  Mrs. Mary Lou (Stockman) Swyter died suddenly after having had the flue it is reported.  The funeral of Mrs. Gordon Swyter, 44, wife of the Adams County Superior Court judge, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday from Emanuel Lutheran Church, Ritzville. Mrs. Swyter died at her home Sunday.  The Rev John Clausen will conduct her service. Interment will be at the Lutheran Cemetery. Mrs. Swyter was born Dec 22, 1931, at Sprague. She was a 1950 graduate of Harrington High school. Teske:  Ernestine Caroline Teske, 63, Ritzville, died at a Portland, OR, hospital last Tuesday and was buried at Ritzville on Saturday. She had lived in the Ritzville area for 46 years. Triebwasser:  "Mrs. William Triebwasser died at her home 12 miles south of Odessa last Friday morning at 10 a.m. of cancer of the liver after a prolonged illness. Mrs. Triebwasser was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Eggers, an old resident of the Odessa country, who recently went to Montana. She was 34 years, 6 months and 16 days old and leaves a husband and six children to mourn her loss. Funeral services were conducted at the Emanuel Lutheran church Monday; Rev H Brockman officiating, after which the remains were interred in the Emanuel Lutheran Cemetery." Wagner:  John Jacob Wagner, 65, veteran employee of the Ritzville Warehouse company, apparently was smothered to death by cascading grain late Monday afternoon in the bowels of the company’s cribbed elevator. An autopsy Tuesday failed to disclose any medical reason why Wagner who had been taking a sample of wheat as it flowed through a small pit near the bottom of the elevator, might have fallen into the plunging stream of grain. County Prosecutor Edward G Cross, acting in his capacity as coroner, said the victim probably either had a dizzy spell and fainted or else may have accidentally bumped his head and been temporarily dazed. Cause of death was given as suffocation. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Lutheran Church with the Rev F J Ahrendt officiating. Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery. Born in Russia on Jan 25, 1885, he came to the United States in 1910, living in the Cunningham area four years before moving to Ritzville. Survivors include the widow, Mary Katherine, at the home in Ritzville; a daughter, Mrs. Hilda Derr of Ritzville; and five sons, Edward (Doc), Alvin and Victor, all of Ritzville; Harold of Albany, OR, and Arthur of Wilbur. Wellsandt:  Mildred Wellsandt, age 90.   Lifelong resident of Ritzville, passed away Wednesday Jan 1, 2003 at Ritzville hospital. Up until her death, she had been living at the Rose Garden Estates for the past year. Third eldest in a family of six children born to Ben and Bessie (Stratton)Snyder, Mildred was born Apr 6, 1912 on the family farm near Ralston, WA. She attended Ralston Schools before graduating from Washtucna High School in 1928, received her teaching certificate from Cheney Normal in 1930, began teaching in a one room school near her parents’ home where she had previously attended school. Taught there for two years, then four years at the two room school in Ralston. Married Theodore (Ted) Wellsandt June 27, 1936, and they farmed on his family farmstead near Ritzville. Mildred began substitute teaching during the fifties and in 1957 signed a contract to teach full time with the Ritzville School District. She taught English and Library fifteen years, retiring in 1972. Ted passed away in 1980. Mildred married Lester H. Pfannekuchen Sept 20, 1986; together they made their home in Ritzville. Lester preceded her in death in July of 2000. Mildred was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church, Washington Association of Wheat Growers, American Association of University Women and charter member and past master of the Ralston Grange. She was name Beta Sigma Phi Lady of the year in 1976. She organized and led 4-H club for many years. Through the years she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school and was a faithful member of Faith Hope Circle at church. She loved traveling and was an avid quilter, and wrote many stories and poems for special occasions. She played golf, bowled, and especially loved her weekly bridge game with her very dear friends. Mildred was a strong believer in helping make her town the best it could be. Reading was her passion and books the best gift she could give. Mildred was preceded in death by her husbands; a brother, Ralph Snyder; and sisters, Dorothy Thomas and Leila Suko. Survived by two daughters and their families, Gaynel and Gayle Gering of Ritzville, Linda and Mike Howell of Walla Walla; brothers, Virgil Snyder of Tacoma, Lester Snyder of Washtucna; and sister, Pearl Bell of Ritzville; three step-daughters, Myrna Kuclick, Carol Larson, and Paula Brady; five grandchildren: Susan Webley and husband, Brian, Brad Gering and wife, Debbie, Steven Gering and wife, Dawn, David Howell and Brian Howell and wife, Marissa; 11 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Graveside services with vault interment will be held on Jan 11, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. at Emanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Ritzville, WA, followed by a memorial Service at Emanuel Lutheran Church at 11 a.m.  Danekas Funeral Home, Ritzville, WA, in charge of arrangements.” (Spokesman Review: 1-08-2003, submitted)

Woodside:  Lyda M. Woodside.—Her home E102-5th, Ritzville, WA. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Howard (Barbara) Teske, Ritzville; one son, Loren Woodside, Lind, WA; two sisters, Mrs. Viola Painter, Winthrop, WA, and Mrs. Alice Clark, Silver City, NM; 8 grandchildren, 1 great grandson. She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Ritzville, member of Zenith Chapter No. 55, OES. Funeral services Friday, Jan 3 at 1 p.m. from the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Ritzville, with Pastor Duane Ullaland officiating. Interment Lutheran Cemetery, Ritzville, WA. Survived by 3 daughters, Mrs. Helene Hoyt of Spokane, Mrs. Elsie Shrall, Mrs. Pauline Adams, both of Ritzville; 2 sons, Otto Zeller, Ritzville; Richard (Dick) Zeller, Spokane, WA; one sister, Mrs. Emma Conet, Germany; 2 brothers, Johanes Baral, Wilhelm Baral, both in Germany; 6 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren. Member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Ritzville. Funeral services Monday, April 14, 3 p.m. from the Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Rev Floyd Yokers officiating. Interment The Lutheran Cemetery.
