Schafer:  “Mrs Elizabeth Schafer, 65, who came to Washington State from Russia before the day of the Communists, died Monday of last week in a Tacoma hospital. Her home was a Puyallup and she was a member of Immanuel Lutheran church here. Funeral services were held on Friday.  Survivors are four sons, Edward, Leo and Arthur, Tacoma, and Ralph, Milton; three daughters, Mrs Howard (Elsie) Rushfeldt and Mrs Leonard (Irene) William, Tacoma, and Mrs Erwin (Ruth) Hayes, Puyallup; 12 grandchildren and one great grandchild; two brothers, Johan and Henry Schmidt, Odessa; six sisters, Mrs George Schafer, Mrs Jacob Grening, Mrs Fred Schmidt and Mrs Sol Walter, Odessa; Mrs Glenn Zastrow, Stockton, CA, and Mrs Martha Peterman, Puyallup. Mrs Grening, Mrs Walter, Mrs George Schafer and Henry Schmidt attended the funeral from here.” (Odessa Record: Jan __, 1956)

Schafer:  Fred Schafer, 77, East Wenatchee, a long time resident of that area, died in a Wenatchee hospital on Oct 7, following a sudden illness. Born on a ranch between Odessa and Ritzville on March 28, 1899, he attended schools there. He came to Wenatchee with his parents, the late Mr and Mrs Henry Schafer, when he was 17.  On June 9, 1920, he married Crystal F Jones at East Wenatchee. Mr Schafer worked there and since 1948 was a salesman with Joe Earhart & Son. Survivors are his wife, at home; three sons, Charles L Schafer, East Wenatchee, Dr R G Schafer, Flint, MI, and Donald Paul Schafer, Seattle; two daughters, Mrs Howard (Jean) Jackson, Vancouver; and Mrs Dick (Frances) King, Boise, ID; two brothers, Dave Schafer, Sr, East Wenatchee, and Jake Schafer, Walla Walla; a sister, Mrs Nolan Packwood, Dunsmuir, CA; and 7 grandchildren. Funeral services were held Oct 11 with interment in the Wenatchee Cemetery.” (Odessa Record: 10-28-1976)

Schafer:  “Funeral rites were held in Odessa on April 18, 1974 for LaVerne Henry Schafer, a victim of multiple sclerosis, who passed away at the Odessa Convalescent Center on April 15, 1974. Memorial services were at 2 p.m. form the United Congregational Church, with Dr Ben M Schafer officiating.  LaVerne Henry Schafer was the son of Henry and Mollie Schafer and was born in Odessa on March 14, 1928. He attended school in Odessa, and then farmed near Rice until 1960 when his illness forced him to quit. In 1964 he was confined to the Convalescent Center and remained there until his death.  He was united in marriage with Jacoleah Klaudt on Aug 14, 1949. His son, Roger, of Odessa, and three daughters, Jo Ellen of Ellensburg, Kimberly Hursh of Odessa, and Pam of Odessa survive him, along with one grandchild, Nicole. A brother, Jerry D Schafer and two sisters, Helen Stehr and Dorothy Zagelow also survive him, as well as his father, Henry B Schafer, all of Odessa. Strate Funeral Home was in charge of burial arrangements at the Rice Cemetery in Rice, WA.” (Odessa Record: 4-25-1974)

Schatz:  “Word has been received of the death of Edwin E Schatz, 78, of Stockton, CA. The former Odessa area resident passed away on Feb 28, 1983. Mr Schatz and his wife, Martha, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last December.” (Odessa Record: 3-17-1983)

Schatz:  Gottlieb Schatz, 89, a native of Odessa, Russia, died at a Stockton, CA, convalescent hospital June 1, after a long illness. A cousin of Gus Zimbelman, he was a resident of Odessa for many years while growing up here.  Schatz moved to Lodi, CA, from WA in 1929. He moved to Stockton in 1933. His wife, Marie, and two children, Richard and Jacquelyn Valencia Schatz, preceded him in death. He is survived by a son, Lawrence of Stockton; a daughter, Mrs Cleola Klarer of Stockton; two brothers, Edwin of Stockton and Richard of Spokane; two sisters, Mrs Sarah Zimbelman of Stockton and Mrs Peggy Swanberg of Seattle. Schatz was last employed by Fiber Board and retired in 1952.” (Odessa Record: 6-16-1977)  

Schatz:  Jacqueline Schatz, aged nine years, the daughter of Mr and Mrs Gottlieb Schatz, Stockton , Calif., died there last Tuesday of spinal meningitis, and was buried Thursday at a private funeral service, it was stated in word received by relatives here this week. She had been ill with the measles and appeared to be getting well, when the more serious ailment struck her. Survivors include her father and mother, one brother, Lawrence, and one sister, Cleola. She was buried beside the body of her brother, Dickie. The Schatz family left here six years ago to make their home in California.” (Odessa Record: 5-24-1935)

Schauerman:  Ruben Schauerman, 65, Des Moines, a former Odessa resident, is presumed dead after the small plane in which he was riding crashed Sunday evening, Aug 21, off Point No Point in Puget Sound, northwest of Seattle.  Ruben was one of four on the plane. They were returning from a fishing trip to Canada. Navy and Coast Guard search efforts have been temporarily suspended because of current high tides, resumption expected after Sept 6.  Born on Oct 19, 1912, in Grand Junction, CO, he was raised in the Odessa area, moving to Peshastin in the late 1930s. He moved to the Seattle area in 1942 and worked as a longshoreman during WW II. He had since been working for Cam Industries, Inc, of Kent.  Surviving are his wife, Leola, of Des Moines; a daughter, Bonnie Snyder, East Wenatchee; a step-daughter, Deanna Pagadalis, South Seattle; two step-sons, Donald Kirk, Maple Valley, and Raymond Kirk, Des Moines; 18 grandchildren; his sisters, Esther Schmauder, Odessa; and Alma Fulford, Redmond; Harriett Kauffman, Tacoma; Eleanora Sackmann, Yakima; and Evelyn Ottmar, Davenport; and his brothers, Ted, Art and Mel Schauerman, all of Odessa.” (Odessa Record: 9-01-1977)

Schibel:  “Several from this area went to Portland this week to attend the funeral services of Mrs Harry L Schibel, 51, who died there on Wednesday of last week. Formerly an Odessa resident, she and Mr Schibel had made their home in Portland, where their family, five boys and one girl, had grown up and left home. They were married here in about 1921, and moved to Portland in the early ‘30s.  The funeral was on Friday. She was a sister of Ed Geissler, Davenport; Mrs John Stumpf, Portland; and Mrs G P Weber, of Ritzville. Ed Geissler and son, Wayne; Mrs Weber, and William and Raymond Geissler attended the services. The latter two are cousins.” (Odessa Record: 10-07-1954)

Schimke:  “Funeral services for Emil Oscar Schimke, 48, principal of the Center elementary school in Grand Coulee for the past year, were held from the Grand Coulee Community Methodist Church May 21, at 10 a.m.  The Rev James M Lane officiated. Graveside services and burial were held at 3 p.m. at Fairmount Memorial Park in Spokane.  Mr Schimke was born at Odessa, WA, May 27, 1913, and died suddenly Friday, May 18.  He married Minnie Soper in Spokane Aug 21, 1937. Prior to coming to Grand Coulee last fall he was employed in the Spokane school system. He was a member of the Elks lodge in Spokane and attended the Nazarene church.  Survivors include his wife, Minnie, and daughter, Peggy, at the home; two sons, Rex, Spokane; Terry, US Navy; two brothers, Edwin Schimke, Spokane; Albert Schimke, Tacoma; and one granddaughter.—Almira Herald.” (Odessa Record: 5-31-1962)

Schimke:  “Memorial services for Harold B Schimke, resident of Forest Grove, Oregon, for 25 years, were held on May 7, Rev Richard Osburn giving the meditation. Son of John and Helena Schimke, Harold, 68, was born in Odessa on Feb 1, 1907. He died in Forest Grove on May 3, 1975. He was married to Martha Reister of Tacoma on June 11, 1932.  Mr Schimke went to Forest Grove in 1946 from Yakima where he taught in a Junior College from 1937 to 1946. He was a seafood inspector in Mississippi for a year prior to that, and also had taught school in Aberdeen, WA. He was a professor of chemistry at Pacific University from 1946 until his retirement in the spring of 1972. Mr Schimke was a member of the United Church of Christ, honorary member of Sigma Xi, past member of the Forest Grove Gleemen and the American Chemical Society.  Surviving are his wife, Martha, of Forest Grove; a son, Gerald of Concord, Mass., daughters, Mrs Anita Stowell of Tehachapi, CA; Mrs Myra Beeler of Hillsboro, OR, and Dorothy Schimke of San Francisco; a brother, Leo, of Sequim, WA; sisters: Mrs Emma Geisler of Arlee, MT; Mrs Ruth Weber and Miss Pauline Schimke of Odessa; Mrs Edna Hyatt and Mrs Esther Hansen of Tacoma; Mrs Johanna Sandvig of Bellingham; and 8 grandchildren.” (Odessa Record: 5-15-1975)

Schmauder:  Edward Schmauder of Moses Lake passed away April 3, 1979 at the Samaritan Hospital in Moses Lake.  He was born in Odessa on June 9, 1909 and married Caroline Bitz in Odessa on Jan 13, 1938. He was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Moses Lake and farmed near Ruff, WA.  He is survived by his wife, Caroline Schmauder, at the home; a son, Donald Schmauder, of Moses Lake; a daughter, Joyce Schmauder, of Moses Lake; a brother, John Schmauder of Odessa; three sisters, Mrs Harold Gies and Mrs Ted Giese of Odessa and Mrs Lydia Knecht of Warden.  Funeral services were Monday, April 9 at 11 a.m. from the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Moses Lake with Rev Daniel Steime officiating. Pallbearers were Norman Bischoff, Harold Hochstetter, Stanley Meyer, Rudolph Schmauder, Reuben Schmidt and Herb Spies. Honorary bearers were Clint Claasen, Ivan Cole, Barney Getzinger, Dick Hinkhouse, John Hochstetter, Adolph Ramm, X Reiner, Herbert Schutz, J C Schmauder and Walt Spies. Interment was at the Pioneer Memorial Gardens in Moses Lake with Chapel of Memories in charge of arrangements.” (Odessa Record: 4-12-1979)

Schmidt:  John Schmidt, 92, died at Tacoma with funeral service at Puyallup. He was a native of Russia, married there in 1885 to Marie Benner. In 1892 they moved to Hastings, NE, and 3 years later to Walla Walla. In 1902 they established a wheat ranch at Odessa, and for the last 20 years were at Puyallup. While in Russia he served as an army doctor with the military forces. Survivors include: two sons, John and Henry, both of Odessa; 7 daughters, Mrs Elizabeth Schafer and Mrs Frieda Peterman of Puyallup; Mrs Kathryn Schafer, Mrs Martha Walter, Mrs Lena Grening and Mrs Anna Schmidt, all of Odessa, and Mrs Marie Zastrow, of CA; 26 grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren; and a great great grandchild. Schmierer:  “Funeral services were held Monday, April 1, 1974 at Christ Lutheran Church for Philip Schmierer, 91 year old retired farmer, and a resident of this area for three quarters of a century. Pastor Daniel Cronrath officiated at the service, with Strate Funeral Home in charge of burial at Riverside Cemetery in Spokane.  Organist was Mrs Ron Frederick, with Mrs Don Zeiler and Mrs Delbert Cook as soloists.  Serving as casket bearers were Ivan Hemmerling, Harvey Wagner, Bob Engle, Kermit Mayberry, Tom Fiess and Herb Spies. Honorary bearers were John Goetz, Emmanuel Goetz, Rev A Hausauer, Fred Weishaar, Adam Roth, Philip Pfeifer and Emmanuel Witt.  Mr Schmierer was born on May 13, 1882 in Russia. He came to this country with his parents. In 1904 he was united in marriage to Lucy Dormaier. They farmed north of Odessa for 16 years. They then moved to Fairfield, WA, where they farmed for six years. Following this the family moved to the Marlin area, where they farmed until their retirement to Odessa in 1942. Mrs Schmierer died on Jan 29, 1966. Mr Schmierer was also preceded in death by a son and a daughter. He had lived at the Memorial Nursing Home in Odessa for over a year. Three weeks ago he was transferred to the Deaconess Hospital in Spokane, where he died Thursday.  He is survived by one son, Albert W Schmierer of Spokane, 2 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and many friends.” (Odessa Record: 4-04-1974) 

Schoessler:   “Funeral services for Margaret Schoessler, 75, resident of Odessa were held from the Country Bible Church near Dusty, WA, on Saturday, Dec 13, at 10 a.m. with the Rev Donald Cheadle officiating. Burial was in the Dusty Cemetery.  She passed at the Odessa Memorial Hospital Dec 9.  She was born Nov 15, 1900 in Odessa, Russia, the daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Jacob Moos. The family migrated to the US from Russia when she was a small child; settling at Gackle, North Dakota. She spent her early life in North Dakota and was married there to Rudolph Schott. Following their marriage they came to Dusty and she lived there until 1961. Her husband passed away in 1952. In 1961 she moved to Ritzville, and was married to Jacob Schoessler in 1964. They moved to Portland, OR. She returned to Ritzville following the death of Mr Schoessler in 1969 and in 1971 moved to Odessa to be with her son. She was a member of the United Congregational Church in Odessa. Surviving are two sons, Rueben Schott, Dusty, and Wilbert Schott of Odessa; two daughters, Mrs Irwin (Gertie) Carlson, Arlington, WA, and Florence Stoughton, Los Angeles, CA, also by 7 grandchildren. The Bruning Funeral Home of Colfax was in charge of arrangements.” (Odessa Record: 12-18-1975)

Schrupp:  “Hilda Greenwalt Schrupp, E 14508 Rockwell, Spokane, WA, passed away July 1, 1979. Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 5 at 10 a.m. from the Chapel of the Valley, Thornhill Valley Funeral Home, S 1400 Pines Rd, Spokane. Interment will be in the Pines Cemetery, Spokane, WA. Survivors include her husband, Harley Schrupp at the home; two sons, Ralph Greenwalt, Tekoa, WA, and Larry W Greenwalt, Ritzville, WA; three daughters, Mrs Charles (Loretta) Schoonover, Spokane; Mrs Vernon (Margaret) Addington, Renton, WA; and Mrs Jim (Gail Ann) Ford, San Diego, CA; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Jack Schoal of Walla Walla, and art Schoal of Olympia; four sisters, Mrs Anna Kanzler, Olympia; Mrs Tina Krodell, Olympia; Mrs Bill (Barbara) Green, Tumwater, WA; and Mrs Martha Reiman, Caldwell, ID; numerous nieces and nephews, Bill Sonsteng Jr.  Preceded in death by her husband, Henry H Greenwalt in April 1964.” (Odessa Record; 7-05-1979)

Schuh:  “Funeral services were held for Rosina (Retter) Schuh on Tuesday, Nov 28 at the Colonial Chapel of the Jones and Jones Funeral Home in Wenatchee, with Pastor E Paul Riedel officiating. Pall bearers were grandsons of the deceased, Art, Don, Gerald, Jerry,  Floyd and Wayne Schuh. Rosina Schuh was born Jan 28, 1882 in Tiplitz, Russia. She died Nov 24, 1972 at the age of 90 years. She married Christian Schuh Nov 28, 1902 in Arzeste, Russia. They came to the US and settled in Odessa for one year, then homesteaded near Wheeler for six years. After that the family moved to north of Ruff, where they lived for 21 years. In 1936 they moved to Wenatchee.  In 1962 the couple moved to Parkside Manor. Mr Schuh passed away March 1, 1965.  Surviving are five sons, Reinhold of Odessa; Otto of Marlin; Ted of Yakima; Chris Jr of Seattle, and Oscar of Quincy. Daughters surviving include Mrs Katie Baker of Wenatchee, Emma Carlson, Ephrata; Hulda Stuhlmiller, Spokane; Martha Clifford and Lydia Probst, both of Seattle. Also surviving are 31 grandchildren, 68 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.” (Odessa Record: 12-07-1972)

Scrupps:  Amellia H (Mollie) Scrupps passed away May 14 at her home in Everett. Mollie (Groh) Scrupps was born April 15, 1903 in Odessa, WA, to Frank and Amelia Groh. She lived in Odessa for 19 years. On Nov 23, 1926 she was married in Odessa to William Scrupps. They lived in Wenatchee 14 years. In 1940 they moved to Everett where they have resided since.  She is survived by her husband, William, at the home; one son, Bill, Jr, daughter-in-law Helen and 5 grandchildren, Bill, David, Patty and Tim Scrupps of Everett and Susan McBride of Port Ludlow; one brother, Clem Groh, Sr, of Odessa; a half-brother, Julius Dettrich of Snohomish; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Dettrich; two brothers, Frank and Tony Groh, and a half-brother, Alois Dettrich.  She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church. Rosary service was held Friday, May 16 at 7:30 p.m. at Purdy, Walters and Cassidy Funeral Home.  Funeral service was Saturday, May 17 at 11:30 a.m. from Immaculate Conception Church with the Rev Fr John Renggli officiating. Peggy Rickard was organist and Kathy Kleisath was vocalist. Selections of ‘The Lord’s Prayer,’ ‘Ave Maria’ and a favorite, ‘Prayer of St Francis,’ were presented. Interment was at Cypress Lawn Cemetery. Casket bearers were William Scrupps, David Scrupps, Tim Scrupps, Kim McBride, Bill Pierce and Randy Pierce.” (Odessa Record: 5-29-1980)  

Schweer:  Nathan Conrad Schweer, 46, former Ruff resident, recently a resident of Otis Orchards, near Spokane, was buried there Tuesday with the Rev W S Pritchard officiating. Rev and Mrs M J Galle of Odessa and the Rev P R Aeschliman , Col fax, were among those who attended the funeral. Survivors include his mother, Mrs C C Schweer, at the home; two sisters, Miss Hulda Schweer, at home, and Mrs Martha Aldrich, Spokane . Mr Schweer, well known among the pioneer residents of the Ruff area, left here 28 years ago with his parents to locate at Otis Orchards. He had been active among the young men of that region and had a large circle of friends.” ( Odessa Record: 6-21-1935)

Seward: William Seward, 45, Grant County sheepman, was found beaten to death late Tuesday night at the Dishaw sheep camp near  Ephrata. Jim Stallings, a bachelor, was arrested Wednesday after fellow sheep herders had reported an alleged argument between Stallings and Steward.  Bilyew, a herder, said Stallings, a resident of the county 15 years, had come to the sheep camp just before dark. A short time later Seward came and the two had what Bilyew said sounded like ‘only  a friendly argument,’ outside the house. Half an hour later, when neither of the men returned, Bilyew and a Mr Gibbons found the body.” (Odessa Record: 5-10-1935)

Sheeran:  “Mrs Judy A (Graedel) Sheeran, age 36, former Odessa resident, passed away Dec 28, 1978 in Spokane, WA.  She was born Aug 22, 1942 at Tacoma, WA. She attended school in Odessa and graduated from high school at Odessa. Her home was at Oroville, WA and prior to that had lived in Cheney for six years. She received her degree as a medical secretary at Spokane Falls Community College and worked as a medical secretary in Cheney.  She is survived by her husband, Bob Sheeran, at the home; one daughter, Heidi Haase, Cheney; three sons, Hal Haase and Colin Haase, and Christopher Sheeran, all of Oroville; her parents, Mr and Mrs Calvin Graedel, one brother Corkey Graedel; one great-aunt, Mrs Paula Nelson, all of Spokane, WA. Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec 30, 1978 at 11 a.m. from the St John’s Episcopal Church in Spokane. Canon E J Mason officiated. Interment was at Fairmont Memorial Park in Spokane with Strate Funeral Home of Davenport in charge of the services. Pall bearers were Robert Billings, Gary Philips, William Grunst, Dennis Sheeran, Ray Carolin, and Tom Messex.” (Odessa Record: 1-04-1979)

Simpson:  “Graveside services for Steven LeRoy Simpson were held Monday June 20 at the Riverview Cemetery in Oroville, with the Rev Dave Edel officiating. Steven was the son of Mr and Mrs Dewey Simpson of Ritzville. He was born in Odessa on June 6, 1970, and had lived at home with his family until moving to Interlake School a year ago, where he died on Thursday, June 6, following an extended illness. In addition to his parents, survivors include three sisters and two brothers, and his grandfather, Ed Manuel of Oroville.” (Odessa Record: 6-27-1974)

Sly:  Lula L Cox Sly, 74, of Prineville, OR, passed away on Nov 13. She was the wife of Cecil M Sly, former Supt of Crook Co, Oregon schools.  Funeral services were held Nov 16 at the Prineville Community Church, with Rev Willard Fenderson officiating.  Mrs Sly was born April 13, 1897 near Odessa. She graduated from high school in Odessa and attended Wash. State College. She was married to Cecil M Sly at Stevenson, WA, on Sept 20, 1919.  They had made their home in Prineville since 1945. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Bob M Sly of Beaverton, OR, and a daughter, Maxine L Scott, of Athena, OR; 6 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren. Burial took place in Juniper Haven Cemetery, Prineville.” (Odessa Record: 18 Nov 1971)

Smith:  “Funeral services were held Friday, March 17, for Fred C Smith, 60, of Tacoma, WA.  Mr Smith was the son-in-law of Mrs Katherine Iltz, of Davenport, and a brother-in-law of Howard Iltz of Spokane. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs Donald Zagman of Tacoma.  Mr Smith died March 11 in a Tacoma hospital.  He was a shop foreman for Coast Sash and Door Co in Tacoma.  He was born in Wilkeson, WA, May 29, 1911, and had lived in Tacoma for the past 36 years, after coming there from Eastern Washington.” (Odessa Record: 3-23-1972)

SpieckerJack S Spiecker, 18, and Jack Knapman, 86, both known in Odessa , and a friend, Howard Taylor of Sequim, were killed when a blast from two boxes of high powered dynamite wrecked the home of Spiecker’s step-father, Henry Emery, near Dungeness, Wash.  The Emery family were moving into a new home and were busy arranging their belongings when the blast occurred, the cause not being known. Velma Spiecker, blown through the side of the house, was found 20 feet away with both ankles broken. The bodies of the boys were found, one 430 feet from the house and the other 300 feet, badly dismembered. Parts of clothing were found a quarter mile away. Knapman was caught under debris and rescued, but died later. Mr Emery was absent from home at the time and Mrs Emery was in the garden 100 feet away. She felt the blast and looked up to see the house crumbling and the bodies flying through the air, although she did not know they were bodies at the time.  Jack was born in Waterville in 1917 and would have graduated from the Sequim high school next year. He is a son of Herb Spiecker, former Odessa resident. His grandfather, Jack Knapman, 86, is the last of the English pioneers who settled in the Dungeness valley. A sailor aboard an English man of war, he deserted his ship 68 years ago and alone, with a canoe, he drifted to the Olympic peninsula, where friendly Ind ia ns took him ashore. He has many descendants in this state. The Emery family had just moved into their new home. The carpenter had finished his work and the family were busy, trying to get settled, when the blast came.” (Odessa Record: 6-14-1935) 

Straub:  John Straub, 75, a resident of the Davenport region since 1917, died Sunday at the home of his sister, Mrs C C Buck, north of there. The funeral was held at the J C Phillips chapel Tuesday afternoon, the Rev F J Ahrendt officiating, and burial was in the Davenport Lutheran Cemetery. Streeter:  “Funeral services for Leanne Streeter were held Saturday, July 10, in the Chapel of the Danekas Funeral Home, Ritzville, with the Rev Ernest Sprenger officiating. Miss Streeter was born July 2, 1956 in Ritzville and died in a highway accident 10 miles outside of Grants Pass, Oregon, on July 7, at the age of 20. Interment followed in Spokane Memorial Gardens in Spokane.  Miss Streeter is survived by her parents, Mr and Mrs Stanley Streeter of Grants Pass, Or, and a sister, Paula, also of the home. She is also survived by her maternal grandmother, Mrs Emma Kuest of Spokane, and paternal grandparents, Mr and Mrs Ralph Streeter of Ritzville. Casket bearers were Neal Weber, Mike Weber, Steve Schafer, Chris Laney, Marvin Pillars and Tom Preston. Tim Weber was an honorary casket bearer. Leanne was living in Cheney at the time of her death and was operating a book store. She was with the family on vacation at the time of the accident.” (Odessa Record: 7-29-1976)

Sumerlin: Dale F Sumerlin, 21, Spokane and Wilbur, died a few hours after a week end auto accident near Cheney. Six other persons were injured in the two car crash. Sumerlin, who also used the name of his foster parent, Oscar Erickson, Wilbur, was a passenger in a car driven by Wallace Kluver, 19, Wilbur. They were returning to Spokane after seeing a basketball game at Cheney. It was Sumerlin’s 21st birthday.” (Odessa Record: 3-07-1957)

Svoboda: (Josie Svoboda) “Funeral services were held recently in Puyallup for Mrs John Svoboda. Mrs Svoboda was born Josie Zicha in Silver Lake, MN, in Nov 1876. She came to Washington in 1898 and was married later to John Svoboda. Eight children were born to this union. Three daughters and her husband preceded her in death. Survivors include three sons, John and Leo of Puyallup, Frank of Whidby Island; two daughters, Alice and Martha of Tacoma; three sisters, Agnes Davies of Cashmere, Alice Michaelson of Colfax, Rose Davies of Pocatello, ID, one brother, George Zicha of Odessa.” (Odessa Record: 10-04-1962)

 Taylor:  “Jack S Spiecker, 18, and Jack Knapman, 86, both known in Odessa , and a friend, Howard Taylor of Sequim, were killed when a blast from two boxes of high powered dynamite wrecked the home of Spiecker’s step-father, Henry Emery, near Dungeness, Wash.  The Emery family were moving into a new home and were busy arranging their belongings when the blast occurred, the cause not being known. Velma Spiecker, blown through the side of the house, was found 20 feet away with both ankles broken. The bodies of the boys were found, one 430 feet from the house and the other 300 feet, badly dismembered. Parts of clothing were found a quarter mile away. Knapman was caught under debris and rescued, but died later. Mr Emery was absent from home at the time and Mrs Emery was in the garden 100 feet away. She felt the blast and looked up to see the house crumbling and the bodies flying through the air, although she did not know they were bodies at the time.  Jack was born in Waterville in 1917 and would have graduated from the Sequim high school next year. He is a son of Herb Spiecker, former Odessa resident. His grandfather, Jack Knapman, 86, is the last of the English pioneers who settled in the Dungeness valley. A sailor aboard an English man of war, he deserted his ship 68 years ago and alone, with a canoe, he drifted to the Olympic peninsula, where friendly Ind ia ns took him ashore. He has many descendants in this state. The Emery family had just moved into their new home. The carpenter had finished his work and the family were busy, trying to get settled, when the blast came.” (Odessa Record: 6-14-1935)

Tillman:  “Funeral services were held at Spokane on Saturday for Henry N Tillman, a long time resident there. He is survived by the widow, Bertha, at the home; four daughters, Mrs Ellen Greenwalt, Odessa; Miss Georgia Tillman, Spokane; Mrs Frances Elman, Sun Spot, NM; and Mrs Rose Boen, Walla Walla; and 5 sons, Roy, James, and Richard, all of Spokane; Oscar in the navy, and Henry, Clark Fork, Idaho.” (Odessa Record: 15 July 1954)

Timm:  George William Timm, ‘Bill’, was born at Pasco on March 9, 1922, to the Herman Timms. He married Mollie Mae Pearce on June 3, 1944 in Stratford. He was preceded in death by his parents and one infant son. He passed away June 22, 1978 with burial at the Okanogan Cemetery. Survivors were: son Gary Timm of Okanogan, daughter, Mrs Leonard (Sandra) Jingling of Moses Lake; two brothers, Jack and Fred Timm, both of Okanogan; two sister, Mrs Marie Middleton of Stratford and Alzora Mathias of Wilson Creek; two granddaughters. Rev Albert Hausauer officiated with the Barnes Funeral Home of Okanogan in charge. (notes from Odessa Record: 6-29-1978)

Toth:  “Esther Schwartz went to Lewiston, Idaho, to attend the funeral services of her son-in-law, Ralph Toth, of Lewiston. The funeral services were held Thursday in Clarkston, WA. Ralph was a former teacher at Lewis and Clark College in Lewiston. Survivors include his wife, Judy, and children, Rene, John, Matt and Kathy, at the home.” (Odessa Record: 11-15-1979)

Torrey:  Orrin O Torrey Dies at Spokane Home. He left Odessa some 35 years ago for Spokane Valley. Burial was in the Pines Cemetery. Survivors include: his wife, Stella; 2 daughters, Carolyn Woodward, Marilyn Rider, both of Spokane Valley; 3 sisters, Mrs Jake G (Louise) Luiten of Lamona; Mrs Ellen Jensen of Pomeroy; and Mrs Ruth Groves of Tacoma. Trautman:  “Funeral services were held for Katherine Trautman of Moses Lake, WA, on Wednesday, July 18, 1979 at 11 a.m. at the Warden Community Church of Christ. Rev Scott Pineger officiated at the services. Selections of ‘Amazing Grace’ and ‘How Great Thou Art’ were sung by Gary and Pat Suko, organist was Freda Radach. Pall bearers were Doug Erstad, Lee Radach, James Rauter, Glen Rossow, Stuart Trautman and Albert Widmer. Mrs Trautman was born in North Dakota on Dec 27, 1896 and passed away on July 14, 1979 at Moses Lake, WA. Interment was at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Warden, WA. Attending the services from this area were Mrs Trautman’s brother, Mr and Mrs Adam Roth; Mr and Mrs Walt Tanke, Mohler; and Mrs Lydia Loeffelbein, Harrington.” (Odessa Record: 7-26-1979)

Turner:  Thomas J Turner was born in Turner, WA, a small town near Dayton on March 29, 1911. He enlisted in the army in 1941. He served overseas during WW II with the Cannon Co, 114 Infantry. On Nov 29, 1947 he was joined in marriage to Agnes Huff at Davenport, WA; to this union two children were born. Tom owned and operated a dry cleaning business in Odessa from 1946 to 1963 when he sold out and moved to Dayton. Survivors include his wife, Agnes; one daughter, Jan Turner of Spokane; one son, Bruce Turner of Spokane; one step son, Edwin Huff of Memphis, TN; one step daughter, Mrs Don (Phyllis) Weishaar, of Odessa; one sister, Goldie Turner of Dayton. Tom died in Dayton on April 2, 1976 with interment in the family plot at the Dayton City Cemetery. (notes from Odessa Record: 4-08-1976)

Tyson:  “Mr and Mrs Howard Reister returned Monday after having been called to Stoneham, Colorado, due to the unexpected death of Mrs Reister’s father, Mr John Tyson.” (Odessa Record: 1-10-1963)

Uhrich:  “Mrs John J (Freda A M) Uhrich, 69, of 1211 North Madison, Tacoma, died Sunday, Jan 20, 1974 in a Gig Harbor nursing home. She was born in Seattle and lived in the Tacoma area for the past 36 years. Mrs Uhrich was a charter member of the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia and Emmanuel Lutheran Church. She lived in Odessa for 13 years as a child.  Survivors include her husband, John Jacob Uhrich; a daughter, Mrs Paul (Phyllis) Kaiser, Tacoma; a son, Richard J Uhrich, Tacoma; 4 grandchildren and 2 step grandchildren. Services were held Jan 23, 1974 in the Mountain View Garden Chapel, Tacoma, WA. Entombment in Mountain View Memorial Park.” (Odessa Record: 1-31-1974)

Voise:  “Funeral services were held for William Voise at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct 3, 1979 form Grace Lutheran Church in Moses Lake, WA, with the Rev Ernest Buettnea, officiating... William was born Sept 15, 1898 at Benton Harbor, MI. As a young boy the family moved to Havre, MT. he was married on Nov 5, 1922 to Irene Sticka. They moved to Washington in 1943. He passed away Sept 30, 1979 at the Samaritan Hospital in Moses Lake, at the age of 81 years. He was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church. He is survived by his wife, Irene of Moses Lake; three daughters, Virginia Haase, Spokane; Frances Speck and Shirley Besancon, Moses Lake; one son, Richard Voise, Odessa; one brother, Jake Voise of Fairfield, MT; 12 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Casket bearers were grandsons: Mike Besancon, Steve Dunsmoor, Leslie Speck, Dave Sullivan, Alan Voise and Roger Voise. Graveside services and interment were at Pioneer Memorial Gardens, Moses Lake, WA.” (Odessa Record: 10-11-1979)
