Waterman, Eugene E.: (TS: May 17, 1904-Feb 10, 1906; s/o Chas & Anna) “Eugene Edward, the infant son of Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Waterman, died at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb 10, 1906, of pneumonia, after a lingering illness of three and one-half months. The attending physician pronounces the little one’s case as the most remarkable attack of pneumonia that ever came to his notice. About Nov 1 the child became ill with pneumonia, the lower lobe of the left lung being affected. After a short time this trouble cleared up and the little one seemed to be improving when it suffered another attack, the lower lobe of the right lung becoming involved. This attack proved more stubborn than the first but it finally succumbed to the treatment and the child seemed in a fair way to recover when the upper lobe of the right lung became the seat of trouble. This attack continued for six weeks during which time the little one hovered on the brink of the grave. Finally the whole lung tissue seemed to clear up and begin to heal and the danger seemed practically over. About ten days ago, however, the sufferer contracted a slight cold and in a short time the parts of the lungs which had been involved previously became worse than at any time during the course of the disease and death resulted. Mr. and Mrs. Waterman have the heartfelt sympathy of the community, for during the past two years they have had more than their share of illness, some one of the family being under the care of a physician nearly all the time. This sympathy was manifested by the large number of friends present at the funeral which took place from the Methodist church Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock. The members of Myrtle Lodge No 121, Knights of Pythias, of which Mr. Waterman is also a member, attended in a body. The pall bearers who assisted in carrying the little body to its last resting place in Maccabee Cemetery were: C. E. Rice, C. E. Sanbour, A. E. Holgae and C. A. Pettijohn. Rev J. N. Woods preached the funeral sermon.” (Sprague Times: 2-16-1906)

"There is a Reaper whose name is death, And with his sickle keen,
He reaps the bearded grain at the breath, And the flowers that grow between.
Shall I have nought that is fair saith he? Have nought but the bearded grain?
Though the breath of these flowers are sweet to me, I will give them all back again.
He looked on the flowers with tearful eyes, He kissed their drooping leaves;
It was for the Lord of Paradise, He bound them in his sheaves.
My Lord hath need of these flowers gay, The Reaper said and smiled;
Tokens of the earth are they, Where he was once a child.
The mother gave in tears and pain, The flowers she most did love;
She knew she should find them all again, Transplanted in the fields above.
Oh not in cruelty not in wrath, the reaper came that day;
It was an Angel that visited the green earth, And took the flowers away."
The funeral of the little infant child of A. F. Wiese was held at the house Tuesday at 2 p.m. REV. J. F. Cook preached the sermon. Both children were buried at the Maccabee cemetery. Submitted by Barbara Curtis.

White, Wm: (added; d. May 1912) “Wm White died last Thursday and was buried Saturday in Maccabee Cemetery, Rev Edwards conducting services at the grave. Mr. White was 76 years of age. He was born in Kentucky and raised in Missouri, coming to the Sprague country in 1879. In 1880 he opened a saloon at Whiskey Rock north of Sprague and since that time he has been engaged in that business in this city and in farming in this city and in farming near here. He bore an excellent reputation for honesty and truth and is said to have been so generous as to preclude all possibility of his accumulating wealth. His love of truth was demonstrated some 20 years ago when he ran Clay Montell, a claim jumper off of his (White’s) claim at the point of a gun. Montell caused his arrest on a charge of attempted murder. The case was prosecuted by Wallace Mount, now a state Supreme Court Judge, who was Prosecuting Atty for Lincoln County, Judge Caton handled the defense and with White on the stand, in an attempt to prove him innocent of intent to kill, made this remark to him, ‘Now, Mr. White, when you was after this man with a gun you simply did it to frighten him, it was not your intention to kill him, was it?’ The answer unexpected and forcible was, ‘You’re d___ right I intended to kill him and the only thing that saved him was the way he got up and moved out o’ there.’ The jury probably impressed by the honor of a man who adhered so strictly to the truth under such trying circumstances, brought in verdict of not guilty. Deceased is survived by one brother living in this vicinity.” (Sprague Advocate: 5-17-1922)

Several other members of the Williams household are ill with the epidemic. The obituary following give the facts concerning Mrs. William's life. Edith A. Mills was born at Bismark,(sic) N. D. Feb 6, 1884. She was the oldest child of Mr. and Mrs. Alec Mills. At seven years of age she came with her parent to Washington and has lived in or near Sprague since 1894. She attended the rural school near her home and later entered the Sprague High School from which she graduated with the class of 1903. During school days her gentle friendly ways and quiet helpfulness made her beloved among her follow student. Gifted with a bright mind and a studious disposition she early entered the teaching profession. After teaching a number of terms in the rural schools she was appointed Deputy Superintendent of County Schools by Miss Margaret Craig and served four years in that capacity. For three succeeding this she taught in the Sprague Public Schools. Her work whether in school room or office was always of the high standard which is the result of earnest endeavor and serious devotion to duty. Many fine young lives with which she came in contact as a teacher will bear witness to the impression made upon them by her noble character. She was united in marriage at Ritzville, Jul 18, 1912, to R. D. Williams of Fishtrap, Washington and since that time resided at the Lake. Two years ago a little son, Dean, came to bless their home. Mrs. Williams was a member of the Congregational Church in which she was always a sincere and earnest worker. Her death coming so suddenly just when life seemed at it's fullest and best is a sad blow to the entire community and especially to her bereaved family. Besides her devoted husband and little son, she leaves her parents; Mr. and Mrs. Alec Mills, brothers Arthur and Robert, and sisters Alta and Aileen to mourn her early departure. A large number of relatives and friends extend sympathy to these sorrowing ones. Her life of thirty four years seem short indeed but measured by it's usefulness it was long for it was crowded with good deeds and devotion to duty and characterized by gentleness and thotfullness (sp) for others. Her loved presence will be missed among us but her tender memory will linger a a benediction bringing peace and comfort to the sorrowing hearts of her loved ones. She was laid to rest Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 13. in the Maccabee Cemetery, Rev. Faulkner officiating. " ( The Sprague Advocate, Nov 15, 1918) Submitted by Barbara Curtis.

While kind friends did all that was possible to make his last hours peaceful, there is none like a mother’s hand to soothe the fevered brow in a last illness. Willie was taken seriously ill on the Saturday previous to his death, however, being peritonitis. Dr Hamley performed an operation, but the disease had gained too firm a hold before his serious condition was realized. Upon being called the doctor immediately had him brought in from his home six miles north of Sprague and the operation followed. Dr Hamley expended every effort and his work was unceasing to save his patient, but to no avail. The deep sympathy of many friends go out to the afflicted parents in this the greatest trial of life.” Card of Thanks. We desire to express our heartfelt appreciation and thanks to the kind friends who assisted in caring for our beloved son during his illness and death. Your kindness will never be forgotten. Mr. and Mrs. A. Witt.” (Sprague Times: 10-21-1904) “The 15 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. August Witt died Wednesday night from the effects of an operation performed for appendicitis Saturday. The parents went east with the world’s fair party but are expected home Saturday, and no funeral arrangements will be made until their arrival.” (Sprague Times: 10-14-1904)

Buried next to his daughter Hattie, who preceded him in death about a year ago. Leaves a wife, two sons, one daughter to mourn.” (notes from Sprague Herald: 11 Nov 1891) Edit: Since the TS is now in Sprague’s Maccabee Cemetery, and no references have been found for the removal of the body, one is left to conjecture this phenomenon. (Wood, Orange G; probate #165; filed 27 Jan 1892) “The family of O G Woods, including himself, have been down with the mumps for several weeks past, but are all now well or convalescent.” (Northwest Tribune, Sassin column: 3-23-1883)

When about 20 years of age she went with her parents by water and rail across the Isthmus of Panama to Eureka, California, where they settled. On Nov 3, 1859, she was united in marriage to Orange S Wood. Four children, 2 girls and 2 boys, were born to them, three of whom still survive and mourn a great loss. In 1871 the family moved from California to this country and located about 12 miles north of what is now Sprague and she has lived in this part of the state most of the time ever since. Mrs. Wood joined the Methodist church when but a young girl and has been one of its loyal staunch members thru all these years.” (Sprague Advocate: 1-30-1914; edit: assume her maiden name was Devenish. SLE page 254 is an item on Stephen Devenish, born New Albany, IN in 1833 with burial in Edwall Cemetery and died Nov 4, 1909; he was of a family of nine brothers and sisters.)
