Schaffer, Conrad, Nov 15, 1918

(notes) Conrad Schaffer died Sunday, Nov 10th, of pneumonia following the influenza. His age was 46 years 11 months and 22 days. He emigrated in 1891. Burial occurred in Emmanus Cemetery. (Odessa Record)

Schall, Mrs. Jacob, Jan 17, 1919

(notes) Mrs. Jacob Schall died Friday afternoon the 10th of Jan of appendicitis, aged 44. She was born in South Russia in 1875. In 1900 she came to America to southwest of Odessa in the Hoffensburg district. She had 5 children by Mr. Raugust who died in 1907 and two years later she married Jacob Schall, by whom she had 4 children. Burial in the Hoffnungsberg Church Cemetery. (Odessa Record)

“Rowena Juanita Scheibner. Died: 5-24-1959. Birth: 8-06-1897, Colorado.  Widowed.  Father: Clarence Sowers. Mother:  Effie Williams. Removal: Hennessey Funeral Home, Spokane, WA.” (Lincoln County Health death card)

Schendel, Herman, June 16, 1916

Herman Schendel was born in Greenwood, Hennepin Co, MN on Jan 6, 1863. March 24, 1883 he was united in marriage with Minnie Stehler. Five children were born to this union, a son and a daughter have passed away before the father. Edward, Mamie and Herman mourn the loss of their father. In 1900 Mr. Schendel moved his family from MN to Davenport. Six weeks ago he suffered a slight stroke of Paralysis followed by softening of the brain and death followed Wednesday June 14 after considerable suffering. Funeral services will be held from the German ME church Friday. (LCT)

Christine Dorothea Schmidt, aged 78 years, died at her home five miles northwest of Edwall, April 5, 1909.

Schmidt, Roy H.,   Jul 21, 1994

“Graveside service for former Davenport resident Roy H Schmidt was held Wednesday afternoon this week at Greenwood Memorial Terrace in Spokane. Pastor Ervin Rymes officiated.  Mr. Schmidt, 72, died last week at his home in Worley, Idaho. He was born Aug 18, 1921, to Gottfried Schmidt and Wilhelmina (Fiess) on the family homestead north of Davenport known as Harker Canyon. He attended Mill Canyon Grade School and graduated from Davenport High in 1939.  He married Adeline Boyk, also of Davenport , who preceded him in death.  Mr. Schmidt worked throughout the Northwest as a farm and cattle laborer and manager. He enjoyed rodeoing and had special interest in the event of calf roping. Strate Funeral Home in Davenport was in charge of arrangements.” (Davenport Times:  7-21-1994)

Schmidt, Walter, Feb 14, 1974

"Services were last week for Walter J. Schmidt, who died Feb 5 in Davenport. Father Aloysius Breznik officiated and pallbearers included M. A. Laughbon, Burton Level, Mike Otis, Charles Linstrum, Joe Linstrum and Don Spinning. Burial followed at a Spokane cemetery. Born in April, 1901 in Edwall, Schmidt farmed between Edwall and Bluestem for 37 years until he retired 11 years ago. He and his wife who were married in Spokane in 1926, then moved to Davenport. He was a member of Bluestem Grange. Survivors include his wife Lucille, a son, Walter Francis Schmidt, Edwall, and two grandchildren. Two sisters, Margaret Balfe, Kennewick, and Theresa Danforth, Spokane, also survive, as does one brother, Nicholas Schmidt, Pasco. There are also several nieces and nephews." (Dav. Times: 2-14-1974)

Schultz, Frank C., Jun 08, 1972

"Funeral services were held in Spokane Monday for Frank C. Schultz, 87, who came to Davenport in 1909 with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Schultz. Frank Schultz was born in Nebraska and came to Coulee City with his parents in 1903 and then to Davenport. He and his father started ‘The Toggery’ clothing store in Davenport in 1909 and sold it to The Palace store of Spokane in 1929. Schultz then moved to Spokane to work for The Palace. The Davenport store was subsequently closed out. Schultz is survived by his wife Eunice Schultz at the home at E 12307 Valleyway; a daughter, Phyllis M. Davis, Spokane, 3 grandsons, 5 great grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Robert (Pearl) King of Spokane. Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Horwege of Davenport attended the funeral." (Dav. Times: 6-08-1972)

Schultz, George W,   Dec 06, 1973

“Services were held Saturday in Spokane for George W Schultz, a former Davenport resident.  He belonged to the Davenport Presbyterian Church, Acacia Lodge, the Davenport OES chapter, and several Spokane organizations.  Survivors include daughters Margaret Hardin, Davenport, and Ruth Foote, Veradale; and sons Glen Schultz, Loon Lake, and Clifford Schultz, Spokane;  11 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and four brothers—Herman Schultz, Eureka, CA; Edgar Schultz, Spokane; Walter Schultz, Livermore, CA; and Joe Schultz, Port Alberni, BC.  Several nieces and nephews also survive.” (Davenport Times:  12-06-1973)

Schulz, J. F., Oct 23, 1913

Mr. J. F. Schulz, who has been suffering with a cancer of the stomach, passed away last Thursday morning. Mr. Schulz was a native of Berlin, Germany, lived in NE for many years, then came to Egypt where he has resided for the past six years. Mr. Schulz has been a faithful church worker and a good neighbor. He is survived by a wife, 6 sons and one daughter. The remains were laid to rest in the German Lutheran Cemetery. The funeral services were conducted by Rev C. Hopf. Mr. Frank and Arnold Schulz from NE attended the funeral of their father. Also Mr. & Mrs. Louis Schulz from Nespelem. (LCT)

Schultz, Mamie J ., Mar 01, 1973

“Mamie Jane Schultz, born in Almira July 13, 1893, died in Spokane Feb 19.  Daughter of area pioneers William Henry and Margaret Elizabeth Wagley, Mrs. Schultz attended school in Tekoa.  She married George W Schultz June 22, 1913 in Tekoa, and they moved to Davenport in 1925, where Schultz was a foreman with the state highway department. They moved to Spokane in 1937.  Survivors, other than her husband, George, are:  two sons: Glen W., Loon Lake, and Clifford W., Spokane; two daughters: Margaret Hardin, Davenport and Ruth Foote, Spokane; three sisters: Winnie Mead and Margaret Guhlke, of Davenport and Ethel Lynn of Spokane. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Mrs. Schultz was a member of the Daughters of the Nile, Spokane; she had also been a member and past Matron of Davenport chapter No. 131, Order of Eastern Star and Pocahontas Lodge of Spokane. She was a member of the Davenport Presbyterian Church and had served one term as president of the Women’s Association. The Rev Roger Muisiner officiated at the service in Spokane.” (Davenport Times:  3-01-1973)

 "William Schultz, a pioneer of the Reardan country, died at his home last week, from appendicitis. His death was shortly followed by the death of his infant." (Citizen: 7-26-1907)

Scott, Kathryn,  Oct 26, 1978

“Services were held Saturday, Oct 21 in Oroville for Kathryn E Scott, 84, who died Wednesday at her home.  Mrs. Scott was born Dec 25, 1893 in PA. In 1904 she moved west with her family to Tacoma where she lived until marrying Frank C Scott in Oct 6, 1915.  The Scotts moved to Harrington where they farmed and raised their family. Following her husband’s retirement in 1952 they moved to Edmonds, and in 1961 to Oroville. Her husband died in 1968 and Mrs. Scott continued to live in Oroville, later moving in with her daughter, Mrs. Edith Holmes of Oroville.  Mrs. Scott was a member of the Oroville Free Methodist Church. She is survived by three sons, Arthur of Chewelah, Steve of Harrington and Charles of Troy, Idaho; two daughters, Edith Holmes, Oroville; and Frances Anderson, Seattle; two sisters, Avis Lougheed, Tacoma , and Eleanor Gerard, Dayton, OH; 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. A daughter, Kathryn Koole, preceded her in death last January. Interment was at the Oroville Riverview Cemetery.” (Davenport Times: 10-26-1978)

Seeger, Alice, Aug 2, 1912

A letter was received from Mr. Frank Seeger saying their daughter Alice, 5 ½  years, had died of diphtheria. Their little son died several days ago, and the little girl passed away on Tuesday, July 23, and the burial took place Wednesday morning the 24th. Mr. Seeger was also down with the same disease but was doing nicely. It is reported that nine in the same family have had diphtheria. Mr. & Mrs. Seeger expect to return to Edwall Sunday. Seeger, Darrel,  July 19, 1912

Darrel, 4 ½ year old son of Mr. & Mrs. Frank Seeger died of diphtheria at Republic, Monday, July 15th. Mr. Seeger left Sunday evening in response to a telegram but was unable to reach there before the end came. Late reports were that their little daughter, Alice 5 ½ years old, was not expected to live. (Citizen-Edwall section)

Setters, Henry G, 1901

 "As was thought to be almost inevitable from the nature and extent of his disease, Henry G Setters died at the Sacred Heart hospital, Spokane, last Saturday at 1:30 p.m., after undergoing an operation which left but one chance for his life. It was found that the condition of his liver was such as to preclude any hope of recovery whatever, and death was a welcome release. The remains were brought back to Reardan, Oct 13th, and deposited in the hall of the Odd Fellows lodge, deceased being a member of that order." (LCT: 10-22-1901)

Shepard, Myrtle, Mar 07, 1974

"Funeral services were held Monday afternoon for Myrtle Nicholls Shepard, who died Friday in Concord, CA. The Rev Frank G Van Doren officiated and pall bearers included Vern Bumgarner, Willard Zellmer, Ted Lyse, Joe Darling, Gilbert Gauger, and Jerry Janett. Burial followed at Mountain View Cemetery. Mrs. Shepard is generally believed to be the third white child born in Lincoln County, her late brother Roy Nicholls being the first. Her parents, John and Emma Nicholls, had built the first general store at Cottonwood Springs (now Davenport) in 1881 and she was born there in 1885. As a young woman she took up china painting and spent one winter studying the art in Los Angeles, CA. In 1911 she married Oscar B Shepard; the couple farmed southeast of Davenport until 1925, when Shepard became a cattle buyer. In 1939 they returned to farming, retiring in 1964, when they moved to California. Mrs. Shepard, who was widowed in 1967, was a member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) for nearly 60 years. She is survived by a son, James Nicholas Shepard, Concord; two grandchildren, Susan Shepard, Concord, and Richard Shepard, San Jose, CA; one niece, Eileen Mascher, Spokane, and two nephews, Henry and William Nicholls, both of Davenport." Shields, Margaret, Mar 29, 1912

Miss Margaret Shields died at the home of her parents, of typhoid pneumonia, Monday. The funeral, at the time this item is being put into type, is expected to be held Friday morning at 10, if a sister, Miss Kate Shields, arrives from the east. The deceased was a young woman of many friends and highly respected and the heart-broken parents have the sympathy of everyone in their sad bereavement. The funeral will be from the Catholic Church, Rev Father MacAleer officiating. (Citizen)

Shields, Michael H., Apr 25, 1974

"Requiem mass for Michael H Shields, 81, of Yakima was celebrated April 17, in Yakima. Father Larry Gooley, SJ, was celebrant. Shields died April 11. He is survived by his wife Clara and three sons. Shields came to the Mohler area in 1900 and grew up here. Cy and Eleanor Gooley, along with Helen Gooley of Spokane, drove to Yakima this past week to attend the funeral services of Cy’s brother-in-law, Mike Shields. The Gooleys spent Tuesday evening with family in Sunnyside en route." (Dav. Times: 4-25-1974

Shimek, Robert, Nov 24, 1911

J. .F Shimek was at Spokane Sunday to attend the funeral of his nephew, Robert, son of Mr. & Mrs. Jos A. Shimek, who died Saturday. The deceased lad was 13 years old. The funeral occurred Sunday from Buchanan chapel and interment took place at Fairmount Cemetery. (Odessa Record)

Siegler, Christopher, Feb 20, 1920

Christopher F. Siegler, aged 83, is dead at Spokane. He fought through the Civil War with the federal forces and was at the battles of Lookout mountain, Chickamauga and Nashville. The late Mr. Siegler came to Spokane 30 years ago. The funeral was conducted by the Grand Army of the Republic. (Odessa Record)

Simpson, John Duncan, d. Apr 02, 2004

"Harrington. Funeral for John Duncan Simpson, Sr., 89, of Harrington was Saturday, April 10, at the Harrington Community Congregational Church. Mr. Simpson died Friday, April 2, at his home. Born Oct 22, 1914, in Mohler, he was the son of George and Agnes (Duncan) Simpson. After graduating from Harrington High School in 1933, he continued to work on the family farm. He was inducted into the US Army on April 22, 1941, and served with the 41st Infantry Division until his discharge on July 11, 1945. He kept in touch with some of his fellow soldiers and looked forward to their annual reunions in The Dalles, OR. He was a member of the Legion, IOOF, a 50-year member of Masons, Rebekahs, Order of the Eastern Star, Rainbow Dad, charter member of the Harrington Lions Club, Harrington Community Church and a Boy Scout leader. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, puttering around his shop, his rose garden and his family. His wife of 48 years, Myrtle, his brother George and his sister Tuttle preceded him in death. He leaves a son, John D. ‘Skip’ (and Sally) Simpson, Jr., of Harrington; two daughters, Myrtle E. ‘Beth’ (and Dennis) Parshall and Catherine A. (and Tom) Eickmeyer, all of Spokane; 7 grandchildren.... 10 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Janet Wagner of Spokane, and Agnes Moeller of Harrington; numerous nieces and nephews; and his best friends and faithful companions, Nessie and Buster." Smalley, Park, Aug 23, 1940

Mrs. Robert Brugger attended the funeral services of Park Smalley at Sprague Tuesday and was soloist at the last rites. Mr. Smalley fell from a boat Sunday while fishing at Loon Lake with his brother-in-law, Attorney R. B. Ott of Ritzville, and was drowned. Mr. Smalley was a partner in the Hall & Smalley Ins. Co of Sprague, and had extensive farm interests. He was past master of the Sprague Masonic lodge, past high priest of chapter 6, Cataract Commandery and a member of the El Katif Shrine. He was a past commander of the American Legion and charter member of the Sprague Post. He was a former president of the Sprague Chamber of Commerce. His widow and one son survive him. (Citizen)

Smith, Bill,  Feb 15, 1973

“Bill Smith, a long-time resident of the Davenport-Harrington area, died in Vietnam in an automobile accident just before the ceasefire. A veteran of WW II, Smith had spent over three years in Vietnam as a civilian adviser and motor maintenance supervisor. After his group was pulled out he was employed by the Vinnel Corp as a shop supervisor.  Smith is survived by his wife and daughter in Vietnam and by a son, Gary Lee Smith, in Eugene, OR.” (Davenport Times:  2-15-1973)

Smith, Elizabeth, May 20, 1943

(Notes) She was born in New Orleans, Dec 15, 1856. She came to Eugene, OR in 1876 and was married at Walla Walla in 1879 to John W. Smith, who preceded her in death several years ago. Shortly after her marriage she came to Davenport and resided here until a few years ago when she went to Talent to live with her daughter. She died, aged 86, on April 23 in Medford, OR.

(notes) George W. Smith, 78, pioneer of the Harrington Wheat Belt, died in a Spokane hospital Sunday, Feb 15, and the remains were taken to the Hennessey & Calloway mortuary. Ashes scattered in Spokane River. Parents Quackers. He was born on Nantucket Island.

Smith, Jesse, June 16, 1916

Jesse Smith, age 8, son of John Smith, school teacher, was instantly killed Saturday by grasping a live electric light wire of high voltage, at Hartline. Jesse, with a playmate, were playing near the four mill. Jesse climbed an electric light pole… (Odessa Record)

“Frankie M. Smith, Davenport, the administratrix of the Estate of L. A. Smith, deceased, has been awarded the property of the estate as surviving spouse.” (Citizen)

Smith, Mrs. L. J. ,  Apr 15, 1927

“Mrs L J Smith, age 83, died at the home of her son, M G Smith at Davenport. Her funeral was held at Davenport last Thursday and the remains were sent to Broken Bow, Nebraska, for interment.” (Odessa Record: 4-15-1927)

Smith, Robert D.,  Dec 13, 1973

"Funeral services were held in Spokane last week for Robert D. Smith, who died there early this month. Born in Davenport in 1924, Smith moved to Spokane 18 years ago. Involved in the restaurant and bowling alley business there, he belonged to the state Bowling Proprietors Association and the Spokane Bowling Association. Survivors include his wife, Anne, two sons, and three daughters, all of Spokane. Two sister, Edna Jackson, Davenport, and Johnny Giese, Spokane; two brothers and several nieces and nephews also survive." (Dav. Times: 12-13-1973) Robert D Smith, was the son of Eugene and Magdalene Smith, and was born June 9, 1924, in Davenport, Washington. He was graduated from the Davenport High School in 1942. He served his country in WW II with great distinction, being honorably discharged in Germany on May 20, 1946. He was married in Germany to Ann Elizabeth Weber on Dec 4, 1948. Four children were born to this union.  He and his brother, Howard, undertook several business ventures, one being the Smith’s Café in Odessa which they operated for a number of years. At the time of his death, he was co-owner of the Imperial Bowling Lanes and the Camelot Restaurant in Spokane, Wash.  He passed away Dec 4, 1973, which was their 25th wedding anniversary. He is survived by his wife, Ann, at the home, four children: Mark of Spokane, and Karin, Kristine and Gerald, all at the home. Two sisters: Mrs Gene (Edna) Jackson of Davenport and Mrs Verl (Johnny) Giese of Spokane.  Two brothers: Gerry Smith of Seattle and Howard Smith of Yakima. Numerous nieces and nephews. Also Ann’s mother who made her home with them for the last 17 years.  Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec 8, 1973, at 1 p.m. from the Ball and Dodd Funeral Home with the Rev A Hausauer officiating. Joyce Hanavan sang ‘The Twenty Third Psalm’ and ‘The Lord’s Prayer’.  Organist was Scott Nelson.  Pall bearers were Phillip Cunningham, Frank Cole, Harold Odeen, John Corbett, Harley Frank and Ilmar Kuljus.  Interment was in the Fairmount Memorial Park, Spokane, WA.” (Odessa Record: 12-13-1973)

Snyder, F. E., Jan 10, 1919

(notes) F. E. Snyder died of influenza, aged 36. Had married Lydia Funk. His daughter, Geneva, died at age of two. His burial was in the Odessa Cemetery next to his daughter. (Odessa Record)

Snyder, Roy, Jan 10, 1908

Monday last, at Davenport, Roy Snyder and O. A. Kiester, while engaged in roofing the veterinary hospital of Dr E. Rude, were precipitated from a ladder. Snyder was killed instantly and Kiester so badly injured that he was taken to a Spokane hospital. Snyder left a wife and 3 children. He was about 20 years old and carried $2,000 insurance in the AOU. His parents live at Eureka, CA. (Citizen)

Spilker, George A.,   Jun 06, 2003

“Davenport.—Funeral Mass was Monday morning at St Anne’s Catholic Church in Medical Lake for George A Spilker, 83, a longtime Medical Lake resident.  Burial took place in Holy Cross Cemetery in Spokane.  Born Sept 18, 1919 in Ritzville, he grew up in Davenport , graduating in 1938 from Davenport High School. He served in the Army in Okinawa during WW II and was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.  He married Eva McCaffery in 1948; the couple moved to Medical Lake in 1960. He was active in the Medical Lake Lions Club and served on the school board for 26 years. He retired from the local phone company in 1984. He was preceded in death by a son, Richard, and a granddaughter, Danielle. He leaves five sons, James, David, Ralph, Paul and Leo; three daughters, Rita, Joan and Lisa; and 12 grandchildren.” ( Davenport Times:  6-06-2003)

Springer, Mrs. Bertha, May 11, 1917

Mrs. Bertha Springer was born in Germany March 27, 1847 and died May 1, 1917 at the Sacred Heart hospital. She came to America 46 years ago and lived most of the time near Edwall, having spent 33 years here. The funeral services were held Friday morning at the Catholic Church, Father McAleer of Harrington, conducting the services. The surviving children are A. G. Springer and Mrs. Carl Devenish of Edwall; Mrs. Homer Devenish and Fred Springer of Spokane; Mrs. Louis McKinney of Yakima. The deceased leaves 12 grandchildren. (Citizen) (see Edwall Cath Cem)

Starner, Don, Nov 30, 1972

"Don Starner became seriously ill Tuesday and was taken in the ambulance by Les Wilcox and Ed Sewall to the VA hospital in Spokane. He died late Thursday night and was taken to Smith Funeral Home for cremation. Starner who had no living relatives, had been retired for many years and lived in the Electric Hotel." (Dav. Stephens, Mrs. Miriam, Apr 26, 1912

Mrs. Miriam Stephens, wife of D M Stephens, for many years a familiar personage at Sprague, and later of Wilbur, died at her home 420 South Ave, Spokane, Saturday, and was buried Monday. She was the mother of R. J. Stevens of Almira and Isaac Stephens of Sherman, both of whom are now engaged in wheat business in Spokane. (Citizen)

Streigel, Jack, Jun 08, 1972

"Jack Streigel passed away in Paso Robles, CA, May 23. He lived in the Creston area for a number of years and in Chewelah before going to CA about 10 years ago to make his home. His brother Robert Striegel and wife of Davenport went to CA to see him but he had passed away before they got there. They remained for the funeral services. Besides his brother Robert here, Striegel is also survived by his wife, Eleanor, and a brother, George, of Milton-Freewater, OR." (Dav. Times: 6-08-1972)

“A memorial service was held March 19, 1990 for Lonnie Robert Stewart in Olympia.  Mr. Stewart , 28, died March 16, 1990. He was a 1980 graduate of Reardan High School and was employed in building construction in Olympia. He is survived by his mother and step-father, Elaine and Daryl Rogers of Spokane; a son, Lonnie Ray Stewart of Olympia; and several brothers and sisters.”   (Davenport Times:  3-29-1990)

Stone, Sylvia K. Z. ,   Oct 19, 1995

“Memorial service for Sylvia Katie Zabreznik Stone, a former longtime Davenport resident will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) in the Assembly of God church in Davenport. Sylvia went to be with the Lord on Oct 15, 1995 in Spokane. She was 51.  She was born on Jan 6, 1944, in Okanogan, WA, to Louis and Jessie Zabreznik, and was raised on the family farm in Aeneas Valley. On Oct 5, 1962, she married Robert Lee Stone of Tonasket, where they made their first home.  Sylvia graduated from CWU in 1968… After living in Ellensburg for a time, the Stones moved to Davenport to raise their family. Sylvia opened a day care and taught preschool in Davenport for over 20 years. Sylvia is survived by her husband of 33 years, Bob Stone; children, Holly Bye and husband Doug of Salem, OR, Wendy Stone and husband Willie of Spokane, Patrick Stone of Spokane, and Casey Stone of Medical Lake; extended family, Lory, Tom and Amanda Marabelle of Medical Lake; three grandchildren; her mother, Jessie Zabreznik of Tonasket; sisters and brothers, Beryl and Roy Curtis of Tonasket, Louis D and Caroline Zabreznik of Tonasket, Clyde and Lana Zabreznik of Adel, GA, and Rodney and Colleen Zabreznik of Fredericksburg, TX; as well as many close family friends and relatives. Strong, P. H., Mar 1, 1912

P. H. Strong, who died Sunday at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane, was buried at Waverly Wednesday, and was the father of our fellow townsman, Fred Strong. Fred left Tuesday morning to attend the funeral. (Citizen)
