Saturday evening, June 18, a few hours after giving birth to a daughter. She was

attorney and pioneer of Lincoln Co, died of plural pneumonia January 4th.
He was 62 years of age and came to the Big Bend in 1883. A wife and six children

Friday afternoon the 10th of Jan of appendicitis, aged 44. She was
born in South Russia in 1875. In 1900 she came to America to southwest of Odessa
in the Hoffensburg district. She had 5 children by Mr. Raugust who died in 1907
and two years later she married Jacob Schall, by whom she had 4 children. Burial

Herman Schendel was born in
Greenwood, Hennepin Co, MN on Jan 6, 1863. March 24, 1883 he was united in
marriage with Minnie Stehler. Five children were born to this union, a son and a
daughter have passed away before the father. Edward, Mamie and Herman mourn the
loss of their father. In 1900 Mr. Schendel moved his family from MN to Davenport.
Six weeks ago he suffered a slight stroke of Paralysis followed by softening of
the brain and death followed Wednesday June 14 after considerable suffering.
Funeral services will be held from the German ME church Friday. (LCT)
Scheuch, Sophia,

Mrs. Sophia Scheuch, born in
Germany in 1866 and married to John Henry Scheuch in 1889, departed this life on
Sunday July 14, 1912. She would have been the mother of ten children, (8 sons
and 2 daughters) but in this sad case the babe, a son, was buried in the same
grave with its mother, who gave up this life along with the babe about to be
born. The funeral was conducted by Rev Lick of Spokane, at the Sassin Cemetery,
a large concourse of old friends and neighbors paying their last respects to the
departed, when she was laid to rest on Tuesday July 16th. Mr. &
Mrs. Scheuch are old and respected residents of this community and the sympathy
of all goes out to the bereaved father and children. A. C. Schy, a brother of
Henry, from Harrington, came up with his family for the funeral. (Citizen)
Schiffler, Fred,

Fred Schiffler, age 72, pioneer resident of Davenport for many years, died at Sacred Heart hospital in Spokane late Saturday evening, following a long illness. Mr. Schiffler underwent an operation about a month before his death, and was thought to be getting along nicely when pneumonia set in, and he grew worse steadily for the last few days before his death. Funeral services were held at Hazen & Jaeger’s chapel in Spokane Tuesday afternoon at 1 PM. Rev C. A. Hodshire of the Davenport Methodist church preached the funeral sermon, assisted by Rev Lange of Spokane. Interment was in Riverside Park Cemetery in Spokane. Pallbearers were E. Zellmer, William Beck, August Zellmer, Fred Mauser, Mr. Wagner and Mr. Wideman, all of Spokane. A number of Davenport friends of Mr. Schiffler attended the funeral. Mr. Schiffler was born in Germany Apr 13, 1854. He came to the United States in June, 1881, and settled in Blue Earth, MN, where he resided until 1901, when he came to Washington. He resided in the Bluestem district for many years, and, after retiring from farm life, moved to Davenport, where he lived until his removal to the hospital in Spokane. He was married Aug 22, 1878 to Pauline Koch, who survives him. He is also survived by two daughters, Mrs. L. J. Miller of Davenport and Mrs. W. G. Mauser of Spokane, and two sons, Hugo Schiffler of Bluestem and Fred E. Schiffler of Portland, as well as by 5 grandchildren. All of the children and their families with the exception of Fred E. Schiffler were present at the funeral.

"Services were last week for Walter J. Schmidt, who died Feb 5 in Davenport. Father Aloysius Breznik officiated and pallbearers included M. A. Laughbon, Burton Level, Mike Otis, Charles Linstrum, Joe Linstrum and Don Spinning. Burial followed at a Spokane cemetery. Born in April, 1901 in Edwall, Schmidt farmed between Edwall and Bluestem for 37 years until he retired 11 years ago. He and his wife who were married in Spokane in 1926, then moved to Davenport. He was a member of Bluestem Grange. Survivors include his wife Lucille, a son, Walter Francis Schmidt, Edwall, and two grandchildren. Two sisters, Margaret Balfe, Kennewick, and Theresa Danforth, Spokane, also survive, as does one brother, Nicholas Schmidt, Pasco. There are also several nieces and nephews." (Dav. Times: 2-14-1974)

"Funeral services were held in Spokane Monday for Frank C Schultz, 87, who came to Davenport in 1909 with his parents, Mr and Mrs C H Schultz. Frank Schultz was born in Nebraska and came to Coulee City with his parents in 1903 and then to Davenport. He and his father started ‘The Toggery’ clothing store in Davenport in 1909 and sold it to The Palace store of Spokane in 1929. Schultz then moved to Spokane to work for The Palace. The Davenport store was subsequently closed out. Schultz is survived by his wife Eunice Schultz at the home at E 12307 Valleyway; a daughter, Phyllis M Davis, Spokane, 3 grandsons, 5 great grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs Robert (Pearl) King of Spokane. Mr and Mrs J C Horwege of Davenport attended the funeral." (Dav. Times: 6-08-1972)

Mr. J. F. Schulz, who has been
suffering with a cancer of the stomach, passed away last Thursday morning. Mr.
Schulz was a native of Berlin, Germany, lived in NE for many years, then came to
Egypt where he has resided for the past six years. Mr. Schulz has been a faithful
church worker and a good neighbor. He is survived by a wife, 6 sons and one
daughter. The remains were laid to rest in the German Lutheran
Cemetery. The
funeral services were conducted by Rev C. Hopf. Mr .Frank and Arnold Schulz from
NE attended the funeral of their father. Also Mr. & Mrs. Louis Schulz from

Seeger, Alice,

A letter was received from Mr.
Frank Seeger saying their daughter Alice, 5 ½
years, had died of diphtheria. Their little son died several days ago,
and the little girl passed away on Tuesday, July 23, and the burial took place
Wednesday morning the 24th. Mr. Seeger was also down with the same
disease but was doing nicely. It is reported that nine in the same family have
had diphtheria. Mr. & Mrs. Seeger expect to return to Edwall Sunday. (Citizen-Edwall

Darrel, 4 ½ year old son of Mr.
& Mrs. Frank Seeger died of diphtheria at Republic, Monday, July 15th.
Mr. Seeger left Sunday evening in response to a telegram but was unable to reach
there before the end came. Late reports were that their little daughter, Alice 5

After a long and useful life,
the latter part of which he rejoiced to see his children successful, our fellow
townsman, Thos Service on Wednesday, Oct 23, 1912, closed his eyes in that sleep
from which there is no awakening… Thomas Service was born in Belfast, Ireland,
April 17, 1832… Joining the Presbyterian Church when a boy, he came to America
at the age of 18 years and went to CA in 1860. He came to WA in 1882, during
territorial days and has resided here ever since. Several years since he buried
his wife here and has since made his home with his children, of whom he is
survived by three: Charles Service and Mrs. B. J. DeSpain of Edwall; and Edward
Service who has been working in Harrington for the harvester factory. The
funeral service was conducted by Rev Chas Snowden of the ME Church on Oct 25,
1912. (Burial was made in the Edwall Cemetery beside his wife.) (Citizen-Edwall

"As was thought to be almost inevitable from the nature and extent of his disease, Henry G Setters died at the Sacred Heart hospital, Spokane, last Saturday at 1:30 p.m., after undergoing an operation which left but one chance for his life. It was found that the condition of his liver was such as to preclude any hope of recovery whatever, and death was a welcome release. The remains were brought back to Reardan, Oct 13th, and deposited in the hall of the Odd Fellows lodge, deceased being a member of that order." (LCT: 10-22-1901)

"Graveside services were held Friday in Davenport for Alpha Shanks, who died last week in Spokane. A Spokane resident for the past several years, Shanks was a former Davenport banker and milling company manager. He was a member of the Davenport chapters of Masons and Eastern Star. Born in Rosalia in 1893, Shanks married Mattie Kyle in 1916. He worked in the Inland Empire grain business for several years, coming to Davenport in 1928 to work for the Lincoln County State Bank. When banks began having financial difficulties in 1932, Shanks was hired by the government as a bank examiner; he worked in the area to get banks reopened. In 1935 he became manager of the Grange Milling Co in Davenport, where he worked until 1944, when he was fired as a cashier by Farmers State Bank in Newport. He worked for the bank, by then National Bank of Commerce, until retirement in 1959. Survivors include his wife, in Spokane, two sons, William in New York, and Richard in Spokane; 13 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren." (Dav. Times: 8-01-1974)

The funeral of James D. Shaw, 74,
was held in the Christian Church Sunday. Mr. Shaw died at his home in Davenport,
Friday, June 23, having been in poor health for some time, though able to be
about most of the time. Deceased was a veteran of the Civil War, having been a
member of Co G 8th
Missouri Cavalry. He was also a member of Gen Rusk Post No 93, GAR, and a member
of the masonic order for the past 50 years, the local lodge having charge of the
funeral services, interment being made in Mountain View Cemetery. He was born in
Missouri May 26, 1842. In November, 1866, he was married to Mary E Line of
Lewisburg, MO. The widow and 7 children and 22 grandchildren and 5 great
grandchildren survive him. The children are: W. A. and T. J. Shaw of Davenport; Mrs.
Euphie Pitts, Coulee City; Mrs. Lizzie Bottom, Rock River, WY; Mrs. Stella Ropp,
Lewiston, ID; Mrs. James Marsh, Cashion, OK; and Mrs. Reppa Warren, Halfway, MO.
He had been a resident of Davenport the past 9 years. (Dav Tribune)
Shell: Maggie, 1933,"Miss Maggie Shell, 47, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Shell, pioneers, was buried at Wilbur on Wednesday. Miss Shell had been an invalid for 34 years. Besides her parents she leaves two sisters, Mrs. William P. Matthews of the high school facility at Puyallup and Mrs. Daniel Hudkins, Wilbur. Owing to the poor health of both her parents, a private funeral was held." (Odessa Record: 3-24-1933)
Shepard, Myrtle, Mar 07, 1974
"Funeral services were held Monday afternoon for Myrtle Nicholls Shepard, who died Friday in Concord, CA. The Rev Frank G Van Doren officiated and pall bearers included Vern Bumgarner, Willard Zellmer, Ted Lyse, Joe Darling, Gilbert Gauger, and Jerry Janett. Burial followed at Mountain View Cemetery. Mrs Shepard is generally believed to be the third white child born in Lincoln County, her late brother Roy Nicholls being the first. Her parents, John and Emma Nicholls, had built the first general store at Cottonwood Springs (now Davenport) in 1881 and she was born there in 1885. As a young woman she took up china painting and spent one winter studying the art in Los Angeles, CA. In 1911 she married Oscar B Shepard; the couple farmed southeast of Davenport until 1925, when Shepard became a cattle buyer. In 1939 they returned to farming, retiring in 1964, when they moved to California. Mrs Shepard, who was widowed in 1967, was a member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) for nearly 60 years. She is survived by a son, James Nicholas Shepard, Concord; two grandchildren, Susan Shepard, Concord, and Richard Shepard, San Jose, CA; one niece, Eileen Mascher, Spokane, and two nephews, Henry and William Nicholls, both of Davenport." Miss Margaret Shields died at
the home of her parents, of typhoid pneumonia, Monday. The funeral, at the time
this item is being put into type, is expected to be held Friday morning at 10,
if a sister, Miss Kate Shields, arrives from the east. The deceased was a young
woman of many friends and highly respected and the heart-broken parents have the
sympathy of everyone in their sad bereavement. The funeral will be from the
Catholic Church, Rev Father MacAleer officiating. (Citizen)

"Requiem mass for Michael H Shields, 81, of Yakima was celebrated April 17, in Yakima. Father Larry Gooley, SJ, was celebrant. Shields died April 11. He is survived by his wife Clara and three sons. Shields came to the Mohler area in 1900 and grew up here. Cy and Eleanor Gooley, along with Helen Gooley of Spokane, drove to Yakima this past week to attend the funeral services of Cy’s brother-in-law, Mike Shields. Christopher F. Siegler, aged 83,
is dead at Spokane. He fought through the Civil War with the federal forces and
was at the battles of Lookout mountain, Chickamauga and Nashville. The late Mr.
Siegler came to Spokane 30 years ago. The funeral was conducted by the Grand

"Harrington. Funeral for John Duncan Simpson, Sr., 89, of Harrington was Saturday, April 10, at the Harrington Community Congregational Church. Mr. Simpson died Friday, April 2, at his home. Born Oct 22, 1914, in Mohler, he was the son of George and Agnes (Duncan) Simpson. After graduating from Harrington High School in 1933, he continued to work on the family farm. He was inducted into the US Army on April 22, 1941, and served with the 41st Infantry Division until his discharge on July 11, 1945. He kept in touch with some of his fellow soldiers and looked forward to their annual reunions in The Dalles, OR. He was a member of the Legion, IOOF, a 50-year member of Masons, Rebekahs, Order of the Eastern Star, Rainbow Dad, charter member of the Harrington Lions Club, Harrington Community Church and a Boy Scout leader. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, puttering around his shop, his rose garden and his family. His wife of 48 years, Myrtle, his brother George and his sister Tuttle preceded him in death. He leaves a son, John D. ‘Skip’ (and Sally) Simpson, Jr., of Harrington; two daughters, Myrtle E. ‘Beth’ (and Dennis) Parshall and Catherine A. (and Tom) Eickmeyer, all of Spokane; 7 grandchildren.... 10 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Janet Wagner of Spokane, and Agnes Moeller of Harrington; numerous nieces and nephews; and his best friends and faithful companions, Nessie and Buster." "Funeral services were held yesterday at Zion Lutheran Church in Davenport for Nancy Ellen Simpson, who died Nov 30 in Davenport. Mrs Simpson was born in 1890 to Milton and Sophie Rash of Summerset, KY. The family moved to the northwest, settling in Davenport in 1904. In 1908 she married Clyde Warwick and they spent most of their marriage farming in Bluestem. He died in 1944. In 1948 Mrs Simpson married Hale Simpson, Edwall, and they lived in that community until his death in 1968, when she moved to Davenport. Survivors include three granddaughters, Nancy Reinbold, Mary Coleman and Jane Holliday, all of Davenport; 6 great grandchildren, four step children, Richard and Robert Simpson and Betty Bundy, Edwall, and Phyllis Munyan, Portland, OR; 12 step grandchildren, numerous step great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A sister, Lora Robinson, lives in Spokane, and a brother, Walter Rash, in Seattle. Mrs Simpson’s son, Eldon Warwick, died in 1969. Mrs Simpson was buried in Spokane. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, the Daughters of the Nile, Spokane, Eastern Star and Bluestem Grange. Pallbearers for the service, which was conducted by Rev Stanley Williamsen, were Gaynor Guell, W L Graham, Howard Moats, Eric Swanson, Orrie Morse and Clem Duenwald." (Dav. Times: 12-05-1974)

"Funeral services were held Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church, Davenport, for George E. Slater, who died Nov 14 in Davenport. Pastor Fred Ahrendt officiated at the service, for which Dixie Guhlke and Marie Potts provided music. Pallbearers included C. A. Smith, Kenneth Kittleson, Earl Samsel, Rod Rector, Dale Hotchkiss and Simon Reinbold. Burial followed at Mountain View Cemetery. Born in 1894, Slater was reared north of Davenport in the Larene area. Mrs. Robert Brugger
attended the
funeral services of Park Smalley at Sprague Tuesday and was soloist at the last
rites. Mr. Smalley fell from a boat Sunday while fishing at Loon Lake with his
brother-in-law, Attorney R. B. Ott of Ritzville, and was drowned. Mr. Smalley was a
partner in the Hall & Smalley Ins. Co of Sprague, and had extensive farm
interests. He was past master of the Sprague Masonic lodge, past high priest of
chapter 6, Cataract Commandery and a member of the El Katif Shrine. He was a
past commander of the American Legion and charter member of the Sprague Post. He
was a former president of the Sprague Chamber of Commerce. His widow and one son

Walla in 1879 to John W. Smith, who preceded her in death several years ago.
Shortly after her marriage she came to Davenport and resided here until a few
years ago when she went to Talent to live with her daughter. She died, aged 86,
on April 23 in Medford, OR.

Involved in the restaurant and bowling alley business there, he belonged to the state Bowling Proprietors Association and the Spokane Bowling Association. Survivors include his wife, Anne, two sons, and three daughters, all of Spokane. Monday last, at Davenport, Roy
Snyder and O. A. Kiester, while engaged in roofing the veterinary hospital of Dr E.
Rude, were precipitated from a ladder. Snyder was killed instantly and Kiester
so badly injured that he was taken to a Spokane hospital. Snyder left a wife and
3 children. He was about 20 years old and carried $2,000 insurance in the AOU.
His parents live at Eureka, CA. (Citizen)
Sommers: "Vincent Sommers, 85, Odessa pioneer, died at Wilbur on Tuesday of Addison’s disease, a rare malady. Mr. Sommers had farmed extensively in the Odessa region for the past 50 years, settling about 15 miles north of Odessa. At one time he was one of the foremost stockmen of the Big Bend and acquired a large acreage of tillable land. While he was successful in agriculture, he was unfortunate in his investments, and suffered reverses, even before the depression. Mr. Sommers was a native of Austria. When he came to Washington territory he was accompanied by his brother, Joseph, and by a Mr. Liebinwalt, who farmed jointly with him for many years. Mr. Liebinwalt died many years ago, but Joseph Sommers is still farming in the north Odessa region. The funeral service was held on Thursday morning from the Catholic church in Wilbur." George A Spilker, 83, a longtime Medical Lake resident.

"Funeral services for Frank E Spining were held Monday at the Davenport Presbyterian Church. The service was under direction of the Strate Funeral Home with the Rev Roger V Muisiner officiating. Spining was born in Davenport Sept 30, 1899 and died at the Lincoln Hospital following extended hospitalization. He married Loraine Moats Oct 21, 1923. Spining had lived and worked the major part of his life in this area with the exception of 20 years he spent with the US Navy as a heavy duty mechanic in Anchorage, Alaska. He also worked on the original Coulee Dam project. Survivors include his wife, Loraine; two sons, Thomas of Seattle, and Robert of Miami Beach, FL; two brothers, Ed Spining of Newport and Donald Spining of Davenport; three sisters, Effie Spining, Lois Spining (both of Seattle; and Myrtle Lowery, Davenport. Four grandchildren also survive. Casket bearers for the service were Vern Bumgarner, Everett Boleneus, Vern Badgley, Carl Sorenson, Jerry Janett and Dale Abbott. Dawna Boleneus was soloist; Jean Green acted as organist for the service. Spining was buried at the Mountain View Cemetery." (Dav. Times: 12-07-1972)

this life at her home in this city yesterday, aged 82 years, 1 month and 5 days.
She had been in poor health for some time. She is survived by four sons, two
daughters, 29 grandchildren and 11 great grand-children. The funeral will be
held tomorrow (Friday) from the Christian Church. (Dav Trib)

Mrs. Bertha Springer was born in
Germany March 27, 1847 and died May 1, 1917 at the Sacred Heart hospital. She
came to America 46 years ago and lived most of the time near Edwall, having
spent 33 years here. The funeral services were held Friday morning at the
Catholic Church, Father McAleer of Harrington, conducting the services. The
surviving children are A. G. Springer and Mrs. Carl Devenish of Edwall; Mrs. Homer
Devenish and Fred Springer of Spokane; Mrs. Louis McKinney of Yakima. The

"Services were conducted yesterday for Frank Spooner, who died Saturday at the age of 87. Born in MN, he was a World War I veteran who farmed in the area. A bachelor, Spooner is survived by several nieces and nephews. The Rev Aloysius Breznik conducted the service and burial followed in the Davenport Catholic Cemetery." (Dav. Times: 3-07-1974)

"Don Starner became seriously ill Tuesday and was taken in the ambulance by Les Wilcox and Ed Sewall to the VA hospital in Spokane. He died late Thursday night and was taken to Smith Funeral Home for cremation. Starner who had no living relatives, had been retired for many years and lived in the Electric Hotel." (Dav. Starzman, Jeffrey R., "Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan 18, for Jeffrey R. Starzman, who died in a car accident near Keller on Saturday, Jan 12, 2002. Jeff was born in Coulee Dam May 23,k 1962, the son of Ralph and Shirley (Utt) Starzman. He attended school in Creston and was graduated from high school in 1980. Throughout his life Jeff was an avid sports fan and participant. Starting at an early age, he participated in rodeos, continuing this into his 20s. He was a very active person, who enjoyed hunting, fishing, his family and life in general. On July 15, 1995, Jeff married Catherine Koontz in Harrington. They made their home in Wilbur and together they had three daughters, Amanda, Emily and Amber. Jeff was an employee of McGregor fertilizer company. He was also a member of the Wilbur Fire Dept and EMT’s, Wilbur Swimming Pool Fund Committee and Eagle Raceway Track in Republic. He is survived by his wife Cathy and their three daughters, Amanda, Emily and amber, at the home; his mother, Shirley (and Clem) Groh, of Odessa; His father, Ralph Starzman (and Mickey Lightbourne), of Nordland, WA; two brothers, Kurt (and Rita) Starzman, of Spokane, and Wade (and Traci) Starzman, of Wilbur; two sisters, Robin Ann Starzman, of Bakersfield, CA; and Teresa Starzman, of Creston; his grandmother, Evla Utt, of Omak; parents-in-law Carl and Cheryl Koontz, of Columbus, Idaho; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Pastor Rob Wilson will officiate at the funeral. Interment will follow at Wilbur Cemetery. Strate Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements." (Odessa Record: 1-17-2002)

Mrs. Grace Stevens died seven miles north of Reardan on July 9th. She was born May 26, 1888 and was married to George Stevens on Jan 16, 1905. He and two children are left to mourn her loss. Burial was in Mondovi Cemetery. (LCT-notes)

Stevens of Almira and Isaac Stephens of Sherman, both of whom are now engaged in

"Jack Streigel passed away in Paso Robles, CA, May 23. He lived in the Creston area for a number of years and in Chewelah before going to CA about 10 years ago to make his home. His brother Robert Striegel and wife of Davenport went to CA to see him but he had passed away before they got there. They remained for the funeral services. Besides his brother Robert here, Striegel is also survived by his wife, Eleanor, and a brother, George, of Milton-Freewater, OR." (Dav. Times: 6-08-1972)

Mrs. Gus Stutz, of Sherman, died
of pneumonia March 16, 1910 and on Saturday morning the 19th her
little son, six years old died of throat trouble after an illness of only five
hours. Mother and son were buried side by side in the Sherman Cemetery.

The funeral was held in this city (Davenport) last Friday of Richard B Sullivan, son of Michael Sullivan of Creston who was recently kicked by a horse. He was taken to Spokane for treatment but the blow proved fatal and death occurred Wednesday, the little boy having been kicked on Sunday. Michael Sullivan is a brother of Dan Sullivan of this city.
