Jahn, Vernon (tribute),  d. 9-02-1945

“Saturday marks the 50th anniversary of the death of Davenport Pvt Vernon B Jahn, who was killed in action on Sept 2, 1945.  Jahn, son of the late Otto and Ruth Jahn, was a member of the Fourth Marine Corps during WW II. He died on a hospital ship at the young age of 20, a few days after letting a grenade explode in his hands rather than toss it away risking injury or death to others in his barracks. The private’s memory was honored with a permanent monument four years ago at a new ballfield in Davenport , which was christened the ‘Vernon B Jahn Memorial Field’.  Since that time lots of volunteer work has gone into developing the field which now is home to the Davenport High School girls softball program, as well as local youth baseball and T-ball teams.  Dale Bly of Keller, who was a classmate and close friend of Jahn during their high school years in Davenport, initiated the memorial project in the late 1980s when he found out Jahn’s parents had not received the Silver Star award in recognition of their son’s heroism. Efforts by Bly and Jahn’s mother to obtain the Silver Star more than 40 years later failed due to eligibility requirements for the award. ‘He just fell through the cracks,’ Bly said of his friend, noting Jahn died away from his unit. ‘The irony is he died the same day they signed the armistice.’  Even though Jahn’s memory wasn’t honored with the Silver Star, Bly is pleased to see the Davenport ballfield take off as his friend’s living legacy. Bly urges local folks to take a moment to remember Jahn for the hero he was, especially on the 50th anniversary of his death. ‘So many younger people don’t realize what some of these people did during the war,’ Bly said. ‘The difference between Vernon and others is that he made a decision to sacrifice himself’.” (Davenport Times:  8-31-1995)
