Thompson, Henry M., Feb 9, 1911

By placing the muzzle of a shot gun under his chin and pressing the trigger with a stick, Henry M. Thompson of Almira, took his own life at the family residence in the southeastern part of that town last Sunday morning, while his wife and children were attending Sunday School a few blocks away. The children arriving home first, found their father’s body crouched in one corner of a room and surrounded by a pool of blood. Others of the family and neighbors were quickly summoned by the terrified children. Coroner O. L. Adams, Prosecuting Attorney J. S. Freece and Deputy Sheriff Brink went to Almira Sunday evening and after a short investigation, decided that an inquest was unnecessary.  Mr. Thompson was a well known pioneer resident of Lincoln County, having settled on a homestead between Wilbur and Govan, March 15, 1889. His cash capital at that time was $15.00, but through hard work and good management he added to his holdings until he owned a section and one-half of fine wheat land, all in a high state of cultivation. He continued in charge of his farm until 1902 when he sold it for $22,000 and moved to Almira, where he built one of the finest residences in the county. He was instrumental in organizing the Almira State Bank and served as one of the officers of the institution for some time. He also promoted the Almira Brick & Building Company, a venture that proved a financial failure and in which Mr. Thompson lost heavily. Shortly after this time he was stricken with a nervous disease that rendered him almost helpless. Financial losses and ill health are believed to be the cause of his rash deed. Mr. Thompson was elected county commissioner of the third district at the November election of 1900 and served creditably for two years. He leaves a wife and seven children. (LCT)

Weir, Thomas G.,    Mar 29, 1901

On Friday, the morning of the 15th, Thos G Weir was thrown from a horse, or rather fell with it, on one of the streets of Almira, and sustained a fracture of the brain, which resulted in death early the next morning. Tom had come to town in the morning and, after taking several drinks, was given a dollar to ride J E Keener’s horse. It is the almost universal opinion that had all heads been clear, the error in judgment would not have been made, for he was one of the best horsemen in the country. He started the horse on a dead run to avoid any possibility of bucking, but about the time they crossed the railroad track, he told the young man named Bell who was riding by his side that he could not stop the horse, threw the rope across to Bell to stop him, which the latter immediately did, hurling the horse and rider to the ground with great force, launched him into the beyond, for he never regained consciousness.—Big Bend Outlook (Citizen)
