Alderson:  William King Alderson, 88, pioneer Wilbur farmer, died at his home in Wilbur Sunday morning. Funeral was held at the Community church in Wilbur. (notes from Odessa Record: 12-01-1949)

Anderson: Hosea T. Anderson- Aug 1904

“Hosea T Anderson died August 18, age 65. He was the father of Mrs John Bruhn.” (Wilbur Register of 8-22-1974 in 70 Years Ago, representing August 1904)* 

 

Anderson:  “Dr John Edgar Anderson, age 98.—Born in Winterset, Ohio on March 2, 1905 to Edgar and May (Tuttle) Anderson; passed away Oct 10, 2003. Graduated from Harrington (WA) High School in 1922. Attended the University of Washington, then University of Oregon School of Medicine, graduating in 1931. John practiced family medicine in Almira, WA from 1932 to 1940 after his internship. His practice in Wilbur, WA lasted from 1940 to full retirement in 1991. During some of those years, he was the Lincoln County Health Officer. Survivors include Grace Towers of Everett, WA and Bennett (Jan) Anderson of Mercer Island, WA; six grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace, in 1978; brother, Charles; sisters, Maude, Pearl and Helen. Private graveside services will be followed by a celebration of John’s life on Sunday, Oct 26, 2003 at the Wilbur Community Center at 1 p.m.” (Spokesman-Review: 10-22-2003)  

 

Angstrom, Kathryn M       2-21-1974

“Funeral services for Kathryn M Angstrom were held Saturday, Feb 16 at 11 a.m. from the Community Presbyterian Church. The Rev Malcolm McCallum officiated at the ceremony. Frank Hanson sang ‘In the Garden’ and ‘How Great Thou Art’ accompanied by Mrs Geraldine Stephenson on the organ. Interment at the Wilbur Cemetery followed the service. Pall bearers were Lyle Perry, Vern Wolfrum, Les Gardner, Arthur Wagner, Herman Rux and Glenn S Porter. The Robertson Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Surviving Mrs Angstrom are her husband, Dean, at the home; one daughter, Carolyn Johnson of Spokane ; two step-daughters, Sharon Rowlett of Medford , Oregon , and Janice Gollehon of Wilbur; eight grandchildren; a sister, Emeline Brand of St Louis , Missouri , and numerous nieces and nephews. Kathryn Martha Angstrom, oldest of three children of Walter and Martha Dowen, was born in Evansville , IN , on June 15, 1908. At the age of nine the family moved to Cut Bank, Montana , where her father worked for the Great Northern Railroad. After graduation from high school she returned to Evansville where she completed beauty school and worked until her marriage in 1929. One daughter, Carolyn, was born of this union. From 1936-1961, she lived in Atlanta, Georgia and Charlotte, North Carolina and it was during this time she was active as a troop leader with the Girl Scouts as well as several garden and bridge clubs.  In Charlotte she was active in the Meyer Park Baptist Church and employed as Jewelry Buyer for J C Penney’s. Coming to Spokane in 1961, she became assistant buyer of sportswear at The Crescent. During this time she met Dean Angstrom and they were married in September 1962, when she came to Wilbur to make her home. She was a member of the Eagles Lodge and Auxiliary No. 2577 of Grand Coulee and The Wilbur Gem and Mineral Club.” (Wilbur Register: 2-21-1974)*

 

Balmat, Cecil                      2-21-1974

“Cecil H Balmat, son of John and Lillyan Balmat, was born Aug 22, 1896 in Great Falls , Montana . He moved with his parents to Spokane in 1905 and attended schools in Spokane , graduating from Lewis and Clark High School in 1913. Cecil worked in the Spokane Auditor’s office until he entered the service in March, 1918, from which he was discharged as Sergeant, Quartermaster’s Corps. He graduated from Stanford University in 1924 receiving a BA Degree with great distinction in Mechanical Engineering. In June 1924 he was employed as an engineer by the Standard Oil Co of CA, where he worked for some time. He returned to his parent's home in Spokane , remaining there for about 12 years. He was later hospitalized at the US Veteran’s Hospital at Roseburg , Oregon where he passed away Feb 15, 1974. He is survived by two sisters, Jean Doris McGee of Soap Lake and Mrs Glen Watson (Helen) of Wilbur; and three nephews, Don Fletcher of Snohomish, Dale Watson of Yakima , and John Watson of Wilbur. Funeral services were held Monday, Feb 18, at 2 p.m. from the Robertson Funeral Home. The Rev J Malcolm McCallum officiated. Interment followed in the Wilbur Cemetery . Pall bearers were Murl Watson, John Watson, Folmar Miller, Robert Bauer, Arthur Hatten, and Herman Rux. The Robertson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.” (Wilbur Register: 2-21-1974)*

“Magdalene S Bandy.—A resident of Wilbur , WA for the last 70 years. A member of the Community Presbyterian Church, Wilbur, and Tuscan Chapter, Order of Eastern Star. Bell , Laura Haden          2-02-1978

“Memorial services for Laura Haden Bell who passed away at Port Angeles on Jan 28, will be held Saturday, Feb 4, at 11 a.m. from the Wilbur Lutheran Church with Pastor A F Gerstmann officiating. Burial will be in the Wilbur Cemetery and the Robertson Funeral Home of Wilbur is making arrangements. Billingsley:  Maude A Billingsley.—Passed away Dec 12 at the Valley General Hospital. She has been a resident of the Alderwood Manor, and a resident of Wilbur, WA. She is survived by 3 daughters, Flossie Billingsley, Wilbur, WA, Ester Millikan, Creston, WA, Hazel Storer, Seattle, WA; 2 sons, Orin Billingsley, Willis Billingsley, both of Wilbur; one sister, Minnie Swartz, California. “Ernest C Bodeau.—Lifetime resident of Wilbur , WA . Member of Sacred Heart Church, Wilbur, WA, Wilbur Grange, Moose Lodge at Grand Coulee, WA, a veteran of WW I.  Survived by his wife, Wilma M Bodeau, at the home; one son, Loren E Bodeau, Wilbur, WA; one daughter, Mrs Paul (Lavonda) Ir_ink, Greenacres, WA; 2 brothers, Alfred and Orlando Bodeau, both Wilbur, WA; 12 grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. Rosary will be Tuesday May 22, 1973, at 7:30 pm., Sacred Heart Church , Wilbur , WA . Funeral of mass Wednesday May 23, 1972, at 10 a.m. also Sacred Heart Church, the Father Bernard Oostermann officiating. Bodeau, Helen                   10-06-1977

“Funeral services for Helen Bodeau will be held today, Thursday, at 10 a.m. from the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wilbur. Mrs Bodeau died Sunday after being taken to the Lincoln Hospital in Davenport . Father Eugene Glatt will officiate at the funeral and burial will be in the Wilbur Cemetery . The Robertson Funeral Home of Wilbur is in charge of arrangements. Helen Bodeau was the daughter of the late Svenning and Christine Paulsen and was born in Chicago , IL , on July 24, 1907. She came to this area at the age of eight and attended Wilbur schools. She trained at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane and worked as a registered nurse in California before marrying Orlando Bodeau in June of 1940. She is survived by her husband at the home; one son, O Paul Bodeau, also of Wilbur; a brother, Harry Paulsen, Spokane; four sisters, Edith Christopher, Costa Mesa, CA, Mabel Felch, Seattle, Gladys Barber and Ethel Arbina, both of Spokane; three grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.” (Wilbur Register: 10-06-1977)*

 

Breed:  “Funeral services for Stanley Bowden Breed, 48, Wilbur, who was found dead in his car last Wednesday evening, an apparent victim of heart failure, were held from Wilbur on Sunday, from the Community church.  Born in Palouse, WA, Feb 13, 1895, he grew to manhood there and was married in 1924 to Miss Gladys Fulkerson of Davenport. He was in the United States navy from December 1917 until January, 1919. Returning he was sent to Davenport in 1924, with the power company, and remained there until 1927, when he was stationed at Wilbur as district manager. He belonged to the American Legion and Masonic lodge, both groups attending the funeral, and he was active in all community events. Under his chairmanship the present war fund drive was completed. He is survived by his widow, at Wilbur; a brother, Harry Breed, Yakima, and a sister, Mrs Roy Batey, Spokane.” (Odessa Record: 11 Nov 1943)Burial not sure. 

 

Brown, Julia "Jackie"    “Wilbur.—Julia ‘Jackie’ Brown, 82, Wilbur, died March 14, 1990, at Odessa. She was born July 21, 1907, at Odessa to Tony and Mary (Tavares) Brown. She lived in the area all her life and was a housekeeper for various families. Survivors include four sisters, Lucy McMillin and Jean Fischer, both of Ephrata; Frances Perkins, Marlin; and a friend, Elmer Christensen, at home. She was preceded in death by two brothers (Tony Jr and Roy). Strate Funeral Home, Wilbur, is in charge of arrangements.” (scrapbook obit)*

 

Clark:  Cue C Clark.—A resident of Nine Mile, WA. A former resident of Wilbur, WA. Survived by three sons, Harold A and Jim G Clark, both Nine Mile; Ronald B Clark, Pinehurst, Idaho; one daughter, Mrs Marie Jarvis, Spokane; two sisters, Mrs Della Hill, Tacoma, WA, Mrs Myrtle Johnston Jungnitson, Long Beach CA; 9 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. Corcoran, Daniel,  “When Wilbur City Marshal Frank Stookey went to the jail on Monday night to let a transient in for a requested night’s lodging he found another transient dead in one of the cell beds. The man dead came to Wilbur Friday night and asked to sleep in the jail. After buying a magazine he went to the cell with Mr Stookey. The marshal left the jail open that night, so the man might leave Saturday. Sunday he closed the outside door but did not go into the jail, believing the lodger had left town. The man dead seemed to be about 30 years of age. He was in bed, well covered, with no sign of a struggle. Death from natural causes was the verdict of Coroner Floyd J Underwood, Davenport. Papers found on the dead man revealed that he was Daniel Corcoran, 30, Spokane, a common laborer at the Grand Coulee dam four months, discharged April 14 because of frequent fainting spells caused by heart trouble. Funeral services were held at Wilbur, with the Rev F S Edes of the English Lutheran church officiating.” (Odessa Record: 4-23-1936)*

 

Covert:  Mrs Joseph Covert,(Lille) 65, was buried at Wilbur on Tuesday afternoon. She was a first cousin of US Senator Homer T Bone. She and her husband came to the Big Bend in 1902, ranching near Wilbur. She is survived by her husband, their son and six daughters, also 25 grandchildren and one great grandchild.” (Odessa Record: 8-12-1937)

Darby:  Margaret O Darby.—Her home, Mansfield, WA. Survived by two daughters, Mrs Lloyd Mitchell, Coulee City, WA; Mrs Ray Stevenson, San Leandro, CA; four brothers, Archie Harris, Wilbur, WA; Ray Harris, Wilbur, WA; Dan Harris, Chelan, WA; two sisters, Mrs Laurence Tanneberg, Coulee City, WA; Mrs Myrtle Godfrey, Seattle, WA; 3 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services Friday, Dec 30, at 11 a.m. from the Assembly of God Church, Coulee City, WA, Rev Donald Meier officiating. Interment Wilbur, WA. Dissing: “Edith Valentine Dissing, 75, died Friday, Aug 19, 1994, in Odessa. She was a resident of the Odessa Convalescent Center. She was born Feb 14, 1919. She was baptized on March 14 of that year at the Dissing family home in Wilbur. Miss Dissing was preceded in death by her parents, Marie and Mikkel Dissing, and a brother, Elman Dissing. She is survived by her guardian and friends, Laura and Patrick Estes and the staff of Odessa Memorial Hospital and the Odessa Convalescent Center. She had lived at the center for the past 11 years. A memorial service was held on Tuesday, Aug 23, on the grounds of the center. The Rev Scott Jurgens officiated. Flohr, Michael  “The funeral of Michael Flohr, a resident of the Wilbur district since 1887, was held at the Wilbur Danish Lutheran church with the Rev Charles Milne, officiating. In the early days of this county Mr Flohr had served as marshal, deputy sheriff and constable.” (Odessa Record: 10-02-1925) “Order admitting the will of Michael Flohr, Wilbur, to probate and naming his brother, G A Flohr, as executor, has been signed.” (Odessa Record: 11-13-1925)*

Gardner, Wesley       1973

“Funeral services were held Dec 29 at the Creston Christian Church for Wesley J Gardner, who died in Davenport , Dec 26.  The Rev James F Farrell was the officiating clergyman. Interment was in the Wilbur Cemetery .  Seven grandsons, Jerry Lee Gardner of Espanola, Wally Gardner of Selah, Don Martin of Seattle, and Randy Hatten, Gale Gardner and Rod Gardner of Wilbur, served as pall bearers. Honorary pall bearers were Ben Johnson, Arthur Hatten, Gwen Traner, Tony Brown and Dellis Angstrom, all of Creston; Philip Dennison of Miles; and James Lane and Keith Kennedy of Wilbur. Gardner is survived by his wife, Essie, at the home; three sons, Ervin Gardner of Selah, Lester Gardner, Wilbur, and Larry Gardner, Creston; two daughters, Anecia Hatten, Creston, and Geraldine Martin, Kirkland; three brothers, Jack Gardner of Spokane, John Gardner and Phillip Gardner of Creston, and four sisters, Effie Iverson, of Colfax, Ruth Keefe, Spokane, Elsie Andrews, Loon Lake, and Maggie Huguenin of Chewelah, in addition to 15 grandchildren, five great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.  Gardner , born in 1893 was married in 1918 in Colville ; the couple first home at Addy, then moved to Inchelium and then to Creston where they have lived the past 33 years. He worked as a machinist for the original Lincoln Lumber Company and later for Boise-Cascade before retiring.” (Davenport Times: 1-10-1974)

Gollehon:  Gerald Glenn Gollehon, Jr, passed away on May 28, 2007 in Wilbur, WA. He was 44.  Gerald is survived by his wife Erin and two children, Brett and Allison, at the home in Wilbur; his mother, Janice Herdrick of Wilbur; one sister, Geraldine Callahan and husband Ted of Colorado; one brother, James Gollehon and wife Ronda of Wilbur; grandfather, Dean Angstrom of Wilbur; and grandmother, Millie Wagner of Odessa. Other survivors include a special aunt, Edith Roloff of Odessa; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Loyd and Carol Stafford, and their three daughters, Cheryl Stafford, Shannon Radoll, and Angela Schultz, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Gerald was known as a loving father and husband. He was a Cub Scout Leader and a Captain for Alaska Airlines with over 18 years of service. A 1981 graduate of Creston High School, Gerald went on to graduate from Embry-Riddell Aeronautical University in Prescott, Arizona. Upon graduation, he was retained as the youngest professor in the school’s history. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, June 2, 2007, at 11 a.m. at Wilbur Lutheran Church with Pastor Holly Gunby officiating. Green, Viola                    2-21-1974

“Viola W Green, the daughter of Peter and Kirsten Miller, was born at Winona , MN , May 15, 1902. She passed away at Seattle , Feb 10, 1974. She lived most of her life in Wilbur, and for the past 19 years had resided in Seattle . She worked for Northwest Hospital in Seattle , and in 1971 she was honored by being named Employee of the Year in that institution. For this honor she received a cash award, also and donated this to The Tumor Clinic at Swedish Hospital .  Mrs Green was a member of the Wilbur Lutheran Church . She is survived by her husband Ralph A Green at the home in Seattle; two sons, George W Green, Wilbur; Gordon W Green, Seattle; one daughter, Mrs Leo (Gloria) Klein, Seattle; five brothers, Adolph Miller, Reardan; Etlar Miller, Brownsville, Texas; Victor Miller, Lewiston, Idaho; Otto Miller, Spokane; Folmar Miller, Wilbur; one sister, Mrs Flora W Jones, Seattle; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Thursday, Feb 14, at 11 a.m. from the Wilbur Lutheran Church , Pastor A F Gerstmann officiating. Pall bearers were: Kevin and Terry Green, Russell Doane, R James Harris, Robert Bauer, and Richard Miller. Burial was in the Wilbur Cemetery . E. “H E Haden, 77, Wilbur, who served Lincoln County two terms as commissioner, died Tuesday.  He was born in Pennsylvania, moved to Nebraska when a young man and, farming there 20 years before coming to the Big Bend and locating near Wilbur, in 1898. He retired form active farming 22 years ago, making his home there. He leaves two brothers and two sisters, Tim Haden, Everett; Wiley Haden,Wilbur; Mrs J T Stonerook, Wilbur; and Mrs Ray Bean, Chewelah; nine children, Thomas Haden, Lynden, WA; Dave Haden, Mrs John Bauer, Mrs Mose Green, Mrs William Wachter, Mrs Frank Mason, Mrs Archer Harris, George Haden, all of Wilbur; 19 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. “Ray James Harris, Age 91.  R James Harris was born on Feb 20, 1918 in Govan , WA to Ray and Alice (Gunn) Harris. He grew up in Govan attending school there before moving to Wilbur and graduating from Wilbur High School . After graduation and working around Wilbur for a while Jim joined the US Army in 1942 where he served as a Medical Tech. While in the military he married Margaret Sherwood on Jan 17, 1943 in Wilbur , WA . After being discharged from the military in 1946 they returned to Wilbur where Jim worked at the service station for a few years before purchasing the station himself. Jim owned and operated the Chevron gas station for several years before retiring in the early 1980s. After retiring, he continued to live in Wilbur until his death on April 17, 2009 in Grand Coulee , WA . Jim is survived by three children: Suzanne Krumsick of Boise , ID ; Dr Jim and Connie Harris, DDS of Wilbur, WA, and Troy Harris of Medical Lake, WA.  Jim also has five grandchildren and four great grandchildren along with numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Jim is preceded in death by his wife Margaret in 2005, daughter Ginny Harris in 2006 and twin sister Ruth Harris in 2007 and a brother Bob Harris in 1972. Jim is a member of the Wilbur Presbyterian Church, Masonic Lodge and the Shriners, Wilbur VFW, Wilbur Golf and CC and was a charter member of the Wilbur Lions Club. Jim was an avid fisherman, enjoyed camping and golfing but spending time with his family gave him the most joy for they were the love of his life. Following her husband’s death, Mrs Howell was personnel supervisor at the Edgecliff Sanitarium in Spokane until she retired 10 years ago. She was a member of the Daughters of the Nile , the Presbyterian Church, Wilbur Civic Improvement Club and for years was soloist in the choir of the Wilbur Church.   Hume, George                      5-29-1975

“A sudden illness and head injuries suffered in a fall were blames for the death of George Hume last Thursday in a Spokane hospital. Mr Hume was stricken while visiting friends at the state highway garage Wednesday and was rushed by Wilbur ambulance to the hospital. Funeral services were held Tuesday of this week from the Wilbur Lutheran Church with Pastor A F Gerstmann officiating. Frank Hanson sang ‘Our Father Has A Light In His Window’ and ‘Rock of Ages’, accompanied by Mrs Roy Sassman at the organ. Pall bearers were Cliff Wyborney, James Novotney, Burton Finch, Robert Luiten, Dale Duvall and Lyle Buchanan. Interment was in the Wilbur Cemetery and the Robertson Funeral Home of Wilbur was in charge of arrangements. Born Nov 30, 1906, Mr Hume received his education at the Miles and Davenport schools. He was united in marriage to Mildred Williams in 1935 while he was serving in the Second Corps of the US Army. He was discharged in 1936 and the family moved to Wilbur in 1945 from Creston and he has resided here since. Mrs Hume died in 1957 and in 1959 he was united in marriage to Ellen Foley Angstrom. Mr Hume worked for many years with the State Dept of Highways and at the time of his retirement was foreman of the Wilbur shop. He was a member of the Trinity and Wilbur Lutheran Churches and was active in the Wilbur Senior Citizens Center , serving his second term as president of the organization at the time of his death.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mildred, a sister and by three brothers. Mrs Johnson died in a Spokane nursing home May 25. She had celebrated her 89th birthday on May 6. At the age of 55 Mrs Johnson received her Licensed Practical Nurse license and retired from this profession at the age of 75. LeRoy was a member of the Wilbur Lutheran Church , a charter member of the board of directors of the REA in Davenport , a member of the Wilbur Grange and a past director of Graingrowers Warehouse Company.  He married Myrtle Wassum on Oct 17, 1938, in Olympia and they were engaged in farming until their retirement in 1964. LeRoy did not know a stranger, had a pleasant disposition and a contagious laugh. Young people sought his company. Survivors include his wife, Myrtle L, at the home; a twin brother, Raymond Johnson of Wilbur; a brother, Howard Johnson of Seattle , and one sister, Mrs Ruth Halverson of Spokane ; many other relatives and friends.  Funeral services were held Friday, Aug 9, at 10 a.m. from the Wilbur Lutheran Church , the Rev Albert Gerstmann officiating. Kallenberger, Christine M  “Christine M Kallenberger, 77, a longtime area resident, passed away on Thursday, May 22, at the Lincoln Hospital in Davenport. Christine was born Jan 3, 1909 at Warden and attended schools there. On Jan 5, 1941 she married Otto Kallenberger at Marlin.  They lived in Creston from 1948 until 1953 where they owned and operated the Shamrock Café.  She has lived in the area all her life and was a member of the Community Presbyterian Church at Wilbur. She worked at Ma’s Café at Wilbur for many years.  Mrs Kallenberger is survived by two daughters, JoAnn Portch of Wilbur and Janice Brown of Harrison, TN; four sisters, Ella Pflugrath of Spokane, Esther Grogan of Cheney, Ruth Morris of Spokane and Pauline Tschritter of Warden; 5 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Otto, and one brother.  Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday from the Community Presbyterian Church of Wilbur, Rev Dan Grether officiating. Concluding services were in the Wilbur Cemetery. Kallenberg, Otto  “Otto Phillip Kallenberger passed away April 17, at Davenport, his home was in Wilbur. He was born in Gold Butte, Montana on Jan 30, 1900 and came to Washington State with his parents, Jacob and Eva Kallenberger in 1907, to farm north of Marlin.  After his parents retired Otto farmed the home place until he moved to the Wilbur area. He is survived by his wife, Christine, at Wilbur; two daughters, Joann Portch, Wilbur and Janice Brown of Chattanooga, Tennessee; five grandchildren; three brothers, Henry Kallenberger of Marlin; Oscar Kallenberger of Milton-Freewater, Oregon; and Raymond Kallenberger of Box Elder, Montana; four sisters, Emma Zimbelman, Odessa; Ida Schorzman, Marlin; Esther Fink, Moses Lake, and Clara Cox, of Portland, Oregon. He was preceded in death by a brother, Walter Kallenberger and a sister Nettie Pfeifer. Miller:  Etta Leona Miller, daughter of pioneer Lincoln County residents John H and Ida E Jump, passed away at Davenport on Jan 30.  Funeral services were held Friday, Feb 3, from the Reardan Presbyterian Church with Rev Stephen Kleiwer and Rev Harold E Parrish officiating. The burial service was Friday afternoon in the Wilbur Cemetery and the Robertson Funeral Home of Wilbur handled the arrangements. Pallbearers were grandsons and the Eastern Star rite by the Starlite Chapter No. 90 was part of the funeral service.  Mrs Miller was born north of Creston on Sept 19, 1895. A lifetime resident of the area, she had made her home in Reardan for the past 22 years. She was a member of Starlite Chapter No. 90, OES, Chewelah Chapter No. 101, OES, Three Link Rebekah Lodge of Reardan, the Reardan Garden Club, The Washington State Federation of Garden Clubs and the Addy Grange. She married Adolph Miller in 1918 and he survives at the home in Reardan. Also surviving are three sons: Stanley Miller, Chewelah; Vernon Miller DVM, Davenport, and Donivan Miller, Harrington; two daughters: Mrs Jean Angstrom and Mrs Joyce Bauer, Wilbur; a brother, Ray Jump, Everett; five sisters, including Margaret Andersen of Wilbur and Ida Mae Portugue, Republic; 19 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.” (Wilbur Register: 2-09-1978) *

Novotney, Hazel F.  “Hazel F Novotney, 81, passed away Oct 4, 1996, at Deaconess Medical Center in Spokane. Her home was in Wilbur. Hazel was born Nov 6, 1914, in Krupp, (now Marlin), Washington, to Edward and Mary Ellen (Hanley) Hose. She began school in Krupp and later attended school for a short time in Spokane before her family moved to Wilbur when she was 12.  She graduated from Wilbur High School in 1934. After school, she took two years of nurses’ training at St Luke’s Hospital in Spokane. She married Melvin J Novotney on June 11, 1936, in Wenatchee. They moved to Keller Ferry where Mel was the pilot on the ferry for many years. Later, Hazel worked at Novotney’s IGA for about 15 years before retiring in 1979.  She was a member of the Wilbur Lutheran Church and the Auxiliary to VFW Post #6268. She enjoyed bridge, bowling, knitting and cooking for family and friends.  She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Melvin Novotney, Sr, at the home in Wilbur; three sons and their wives, Melvin Berdell Novotney and his wife Colleen of Wilbur; Edward James Novotney and Bunny of Keller; and Gaylord Ross Novotney and Sharon of Arlington, WA; 12 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and a brother Berdell Hose and his wife Dora of Beaverton, Oregon. Funeral services were held Monday, Oct 7, at 11 a.m. at the Wilbur Lutheran Church with Pastor Mike Nelson and Intern Pastor Corey Fuhrman officiating. Payne, G F:  “The funeral of C F Payne, age 51, who for years farmed between Odessa and Wilbur, was held at the Wilbur Community church last Thursday, the Rev Scott Wallace officiating. Mr Payne was killed while skidding logs at Ferry, WA, Feb 4th. While he was attempting to separate two logs that had lodged on an incline, he was caught under one of them and crushed, his death being instant.  He came to Washington in 1903 and farmed in this county until 1924 when he moved to the Hartline district in Grant County.  He is survived by eight children, four sons and four daughters.” (Odessa Record: 2-18-1927)

Payne, Mrs G F (Meldora),1920,  "Mrs G F Payne, wife of a prominent wheat grower residing between Odessa and Wilbur, died of pneumonia following influenza Sunday afternoon after an illness of 15 days. Mrs Payne leaves besides her husband, eight children between the ages of three and twenty years, to mourn her loss. Reister:  “Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 18, 1981 for Elizabeth Reister, who passed away at Odessa Memorial Hospital on June 15, 1981. Pastor Malcom McCallum of Spirit Lake, Idaho and Pastor Robert Shofner of Odessa officiated at the 2 p.m. services held at the Community Presbyterian Church in Wilbur, WA.  Mrs Reister had been a resident of the Wilbur community for the past 40 years. She had moved from her home in Wilbur to the Odessa Convalescent Center in August of 1980. She had been in failing health since she had fallen and broken her hip in April.  Elizabeth W Reister was born in St Louis, MO on Dec 30, 1896, the daughter of Wilhelm and Charlotte Bockhouse. She was married to Ora Leonard Reister in December of 1919, at Tacoma, WA. To this union five children were born. The family moved to Wilbur in 1940, from the Jerome area. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary Post 6268, Wilbur; a former post mistress at Jerome, WA; and she worked for many years as a clerk of the Foley Variety Store (now Davis Variety) in Wilbur. She was also an active member of the Wilbur Senior Citizens.  Survivors include two sons, Howard W Reister of Odessa, and Raymond C Reister of Wilbur; three daughters, Mildred Wagner of Sunnyside; Edith Roloff of Quincy; and Irene Kennedy of Wilbur; two sisters, Minnie Sphyler of Colville, WA and Frieda McDonald of Kettle Falls, WA; 12 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her husband, O L Reister in 1963; three brothers; one sister; one grandson, Randy Kennedy, and one granddaughter, Carolyn Angstrom. Providing special music for the services were Faith McCallum on the organ and Jan Goodman and Geraldine Gollehon, who sang ‘In The Garden’ and ‘Amazing Grace.’  Geraldine is a great granddaughter of Mrs Reister. “Harold E Ring passed away Friday, Sept 30, at Idaho Falls , Idaho , a victim of cardiac arrest. Mr Ring was born Jan 18, 1917, at Wilbur and remained there until his graduation from Wilbur High School . He operated a cattle and wheat ranch at Keller for several years and was also a contractor in rodeo stock. He was a member of the Grange and the RCA. For the past several years, he had been working in construction at Idaho Falls , Idaho . Mr Ring is survived by his wife, June; his two sons Harold (Mike) Ring of Toppenish, and Robert R Ring of McMinnville, Oregon; his three daughters, Sharon K Kintschi of Edwall, Judith K Hughes of Creston, and Connie Forkner of Spokane; his two sisters Alma Whipple of Sprague, and Edna Gubser of Spokane; thirteen grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at 1 pm. at the Wilbur Cemetery, today (Thursday), Sept 6, with Bishop Kent Peterson of Latter Day Saints Church officiating. Rosenberg:  “Service for Clara Louise Rosenberg, 95, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Almira, WA, where she was a member. Burial will follow at Wilbur (WA) Cemetery, with Strate Funeral Home in Grand Coulee in charge of arrangements.  Mrs Rosenberg, who died Monday, was born in Illinois and came to the Almira area with her family as a child. Married to Adelbert Rosenberg, they farmed at Almira before his death in 1955. She was a 55 year member of the Grand Coulee Grange 807. Mrs Rosenberg had been active with the Lincoln County cancer Society and the Tuberculosis Association. Stirritt, Elizabeth  Elizabeth Stirritt.  “The funeral of Mrs Jack Stirritt whose death was announced in the Record last week, was held at Wilbur Sunday. The rites were in charge of the Pythian sisters of Marlin, and the Rev Scott Wallace of Wilbur Community church preached the sermon. Pallbearers were Charles Peterson, Ed Peterson, Rudolph Templeton, Arthur Amende, Edward Engles and W C Dashiell.  Mrs Stirritt was an outstanding character of this district during the early pioneer period. She came to Walla Walla in 1884 and 1887 settled in the Big Bend. In 1889 she married Jack Stirritt, a stockman and for 33 years lived on his ranch northwest of Odessa in the Marlin district. The farm truck was driven by H H Storer of Wilbur and the other by Ernest Bruce, Ellensburg.  Fired which broke out in  both trucks immediately after the head-on crash cremated the bodies of both drivers. The conflagration tied up traffic on the highway for nearly two hours… Storer, who had left Wilbur Thursday, was on his way to get a load of coal at Cle Elum. His truck apparently went out of control and forced the tanker into the guard rail, 150 feet above the Northern Pacific tracks along the banks of the Yakima River. The trucks crashed after the tanker had smashed head-on into the rail, meeting head-on. Storer had lived at Wilbur since 1900. Burial will be at Idaho Falls, Idaho, his former home.  He had been night watchman at Wilbur for several terms, but recently operated an independent trucking business.” (Odessa Record: 9-16-1937)*

VanSickle, Robert L           2-21-1974

“Funeral services for Robert Lee VanSickle were held from the Wilbur Lutheran Church on Wednesday, Feb 20, 1974. The Rev Roland Wuest of Pasco and the Rev A F Gerstmann officiated. Music was by the congregation and a solo by Frank Hanson, accompanied by Mrs Roy Sassman on the organ. Masonic rites were conducted at the Wilbur Cemetery by Lee’s brother Masons of the Tuscan Masonic Lodge of Wilbur. They also served as pall bearers. The Robertson Funeral Home was in charge of the funeral arrangements. Honorary pall bearers: Wally Meyer, Ing Hansen, Norman Houger, Fred Haydon, Ben Johnson, Phil Gardner, Ralph Starzman, Jim Rosman, Lorin Simons,  Vern Nate, Tony Brown and Richard Hedrick. Robert Lee VanSickle was born Feb 13, 1917 near Almira and entered into rest during his sleep on Feb 14, 1974 at his daughter’s home in Long Beach , CA .  The VanSickle family moved to Creston when Lee was five years old and he has been a resident there since that time. After his graduation from Creston High School , Lee operated the family business upon the death of his father, Charles VanSickle. His mother, Myra V nee Buchanan, also preceded him in death. Lee married Alice Schafer on Jan 1, 1939 in Spokane and to this union were born two daughters, Mrs Roy ( Nancy ) Todd of  Ventura, CA, and Mrs H E (Kay) McGuinness, Long Beach , CA . In addition to his wife at the home, and his daughters, he is survived by two grandsons, Ricky Todd and Shawn McGuinness and two granddaughters, Kristina Todd and Kathleen McGuinness; one sister, Mrs Ivan (Eva) Hansen of Livermore, CA and a brother, Vallie VanSickle, Kettle Falls, and numerous other relatives.  Lee was widely known for the VanSickle sub-soiler and was reputed to be one of the best welders in the county. He was very active in the business until Oct 13, 1966 when he suffered a severe coronary occlusion and had been disabled since that time. Lee was a member of the Wilbur Lutheran Church and Tuscan Lodge No. 81, F & AM. Wagner, Ernest C              1-10-1974

“Ernest Carl Wagner was born Oct 15, 1902, at the Wagner family farm home south of Wilbur. His childhood and youth were spent on the farm and he received his public school education at the Fairview School near his home.  Ernest’s wife was Ethel Elaine Partridge and they were united in marriage at Davenport on Nov 26, 1924. Ernest and his wife moved to the north edge of Wilbur in 1953 in order to be able to provide care for his elderly father; but Ernest continued to farm the home place until he was forced to retire due to reasons of health in 1965. Since that time he had been able to do very little physical work. He had a keen interest in the farm industry in which he devoted all his working days. Ernest was first hospitalized for surgery in 1965, and about four weeks ago he entered a Spokane hospital for his eighth surgery. After a week of recuperation, he was transferred to the Southcrest Convalescent Center in Spokane . He seemed to be making progress toward recovery until Christmas Eve when he suddenly began to fail and was called to his final rest at about 9:15 p.m. that evening. Ernest was preceded in death by his parents, George and Mary Wagner. He is survived by his wife Ethel at home; by two sons, John and Robert of Wilbur; by one daughter, Clara M Kirkwood of Moses Lake; by ten grandchildren; by two brothers, Floyd Wagner of Kerrville, Texas, and Clarence of Wilbur; by six sisters, Merle Toskey and Edith Robarge of Seattle; Bessie Bumgarner of Colfax, Ellen Artley of Wenatchee, Dorothy Mager of Wilbur, and Ethel Erickson of Genesee, Idaho; and by other relatives and friends. Ernest will be remembered as a beloved husband and father and brother, a person whose life centered in the home, the family and his life’s work. He was particularly fond of his grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 27 from the Presbyterian Church, Wilbur, WA. The Rev Malcolm J McCallum officiating. “Memorial services for Mrs Marshall (Eva) Watson will be held Saturday, March 2 at 11 a.m. at Community Presbyterian Church with the Rev Malcolm McCallum officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the Robertson Funeral Home.  Mrs Watson, 73, was fatally injured in a traffic accident near Salton Sea , CA , on Feb 21.  Mr and Mrs Watson were spending a month in southern California after being with their son, Bob Watson, and a niece and nephew in Redwood City , CA for two months. The Watsons had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last Nov 28.  In addition to her husband, Mrs Watson is survived by one son, Bob Watson of Redwood City , CA ; one daughter, Jean Miller of Wilbur; five grandsons, one granddaughter and numerous nieces and nephews. Wilson, Susan                     4-10-1975

“Susan Maupin Wilson, age 96, passed away April 3 in Spokane . Funeral services were held at the Wilbur Cemetery on Monday, April 7, Pastor Albert Tietz officiating.  She was the only child of David and Mary Ann Maupin, born Dec 26, 1878, at Speedwell, TN. The family homesteaded north of Wilbur in 1888. She was married to Jordon D Wilson in 1893. Mr Wilson passed away in 1942. Surviving are three sons, Alonzo C Wilson, Kendrick , Idaho ; Sidney, A Wilson, Spokane ; and Everett L Wilson, Almira. A daughter preceded her in death. Also surviving are 6 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 20 great-great grandchildren. She was a member of the Almira Rebekah Lodge.
