Marianna "Anna" [Covert] Smyth
Obituary
"Marianna Covert was born April 1, 1857, at Ovid, New York, daughter of Katherine Field and Tunis A. Covert. She moved to Waterloo, Iowa, with her parents when very young.
Here she received her education, later teaching school in Iowa and Kansas.
In the year 1880 she was married to Samuel J. Smyth whom she has survived 14 years. To this union three children were born; a son and daughter having passed on in their youth.
In 1889 Mrs. Smyth and her husband moved to Tacoma, Wash., and in 1913 came to Goldendale.
She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, and in her younger years a very active worker in church affairs.
She is survived by one daughter, Cora, wife of Otis Branton, and a granddaughter, Shirley, all of Goldendale. Also two brothers, Charles B. Covert, of San Diego, California,
83 years of age, and Wirt W. Covert, of Omaha, Nebraska, 76 years of age.
She passed away December 30th at the age of 84 years and nine months.
With the exception of the last few days of her life, she retained a remarkably clear mind, and a confident hold upon spiritual truth that enabled her to approach
the end calmly and triumphantly. She has ever been an ardent searcher after "the way of life," and kept in closest touch with modern trends in order to release
her inner powers most effectively.
Funeral services were held in Goldendale, January 1, from the Phillips Funeral Home, with Rev. C. J. Hall officiating. The remains were taken to Portland for cremation.
From Portland her ashes were taken to Tacoma for interment."
