Gerber, Bertha

"Bertha (Stegman) Wilke Gerber, 91, a former Goldendale resident of 55 years, died Saturday, Jan. 9, 1993, at the home of her daughter in Camano Island, Wash., following cancer surgery and a brief illness. The youngest child, she was born Sept. 12, 1901, to Dietrich H. and Anna Stegman on their homestead just outside the town of Warwick, Wash.

She married Al Wilke of White Salmon in January 1926. In December 1929, her husband died in an industrial accident. The couple had two children.

She moved to Goldendale in 1937 where she married Martin Gerber in 1938. Mr. Gerber died in 1962.

Mrs. Gerber was a homemaker who loved her family. She will be remembered for her culinary skills. She also enjoyed reading and crocheting.

Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Charles and Henry; two sisters, Meta Morran and Mayme Mueller; and a step-daughter, Geraldine Potter.

Survivors include one son, Al Wilke of Yakima; one daughter, LaVerne Wilke Biggs of Camano Island, Wash.; one step-daughter, Maxine Christian; two grandchildren, Steve Wilke and Janet Wilke Dietrich; and four great grandchildren, Nathan Dietrich, Joshua Wilke and Megan Wilke. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, Jan. 14, at 1 p.m. at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Recitation of the Rosary was at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 13, at the church."

Bertha [Stegman] was born September 12, 1901 to Annie and Dietrich Stegman in Skamania County. Her marriage to Alfred Wilke took place on January 14, 1926 in Goldendale, Klickitat County, WA. Several years after Alfred's death, Bertha married Martin Luther Gerber on February 16, 1939 in Skamania County. Bertha is buried in Holy Trinity Cemetery, near Goldendale.
