Chehalis County was formed in 1854 and renamed Grays Harbor County in 1915 after Captain Robert Gray who discovered the harbor in 1792. In 1852 Isaiah Scammon settled on the Chehalis River near present-day South Montesano. The Scammon home became the center of the local settlement, housed the post office, and was the county seat for a number of years. In 1859, the first settlement near Hoquiam was established, which was followed by Scotsmen who settled in Aberdeen in 1861.
