AUGUST EDWARD TIMMERMAN

Return to Biographies and Oral Histories Index

August Edward Timmerman was another early immigrant who came to Franklin County from Germany by way of Nebraska, where he stopped off for a couple of years to work on farms before coming west. He and his brother John went into the livestock business in the late 1990’s, raising sheep, cattle and horses in the area around Sulphur Lake. Walter Timmerman, his son, later wrote that there was plenty of bunchgrass and water, a happy combination, he said.

By 1894 the Timmermans had built up a herd of 700 head of cattle, which they transferred from the Kahlotus-Washtucna area to Grant Meadows, consisting of over 600 acres of overflow lands at the mouth of the Yakima River which they leased for $500 a year from Miller and Lux, who also had large holding of livestock at various sites between Mexico and Canada, Walter Timmerman continued. In 1890 August Timmerman was elected County Commissioner of Franklin County, in a race against Gibson Savage. The election returns showed that the contest had ended in a tie vote, so it was decided to flip a coin, and Timmerman won the toss.
