"MAIL CARRIERS TIMED ON DAILY BEATS"
The Pasco Herald
March 8, 1923
Return to Old Newspapers Index
When the mail carriers came out on their rounds Thursday morning people stopped to gaze and wonder at Postmaster Cox trailing along beside or after the carrier, pushing a bicycle wheel ahead of him. When the carrier went into a place of business Cox followed with the wheel. If the carrier climbed stairs, the wheel was pushed up and then down again.
The purpose of the demonstration was to determine how far each carrier traveled in going over his beat. Attached to the wheel was a tiny speedometer that recorded the distances, but not the rate, of the carrier. The only results so far available were those for S. Davenport on the business section delivery. His beat took him over two and one-half miles on his morning trip, or five miles day.
